    UHMW is a heavy-duty, high-impact plastic used in a variety of extreme weather applications from forestry equipment to snowmobile skis. UHMW is virtually unbreakable, significantly more wear-resistant than steel, and not adversely affected by freezing winter temperatures. In snow plow edge applications, UHMW is much quieter than steel and more gentle on surfaces, increasing the longevity of roads and protecting aesthetic surfaces such as cobblestone and driveway transitions. Interstate Plastics cuts UHMW sheet to your specified dimensions and the material’s desirable machining properties allow customers to drill bolt-holes and mount edges with ease (and with no specialized hardware required).
    Odorless, tasteless and nontoxic
    Highly resistant to corrosive chemicals (except oxidizing acids)
    Extremely low moisture absorption
    Very low coefficient of friction
    Self-lubricating
    Highly resistant to wear and abrasion
    Easy to fabricate and machine with common shop and woodworking tools
    Reprocessed grades, enhanced bearing and wear grades available, FDA compliant grades available for greatly extended part life
    Reduced maintenance costs and energy consumption
    Extends equipment life

    Looks like it worked out well for you. I saw that Polaris makes a 72" L shaped poly edge for use on gravel and grass. I'll be using my 72" Land Pride blade for the first time tomorrow with the storm thats supposed to drop 10-15" starting this evening. If that doesn't work well on gravel I'd consider modifying the Polaris edge to see if it would be a better solution. Below is how it is typically listed in case anyone is interested or has any experience with it.

    UHMW- Ultra High Molecular Weight
    It’s a polyethylene plastic, common to be used where slick glide surfaces need to be abrasion resistant.
    Often used on plow blades, chutes for gravel, dogsled runners, bottom of air-boats and skis for planes to land on snow and ice.
    Expensive but nothing cheap compares to its durability.

    I recently replaced the steel edge on my John Deere snowblower. It’s a big heavy unit and I also was concerned about ripping up my driveway. So I replaced the edge with the thick rubber belting material and I also found some replacement uhmw skids that fit the blower perfectly. Now I have a pretty nice setup.
    I did not consider a plastic edge such as yours we’ll see how the rubber one holds up.

      @@johnthree1611I can’t remember where I bought it from..
      I think I just did a google search for flexible snow plow blade material or something like that..
      It’s the same material that is used on the rubber belts on conveyers used in gravel pits.
      And it has held up
      Extremely well. It won’t scrape up any ice or hard snow but that’s ok for my needs. It’s really saved my driveway

    I have the uhmw and getting ready to install on my blade and noticed that the uhmw does't go flush with the pavement in the front as the plow itself the way it is shaped has the front edge of the uhmw up about 1/4 inch however the back of the uhmw where it is flat against the blade goes down to the pavement. Did you notice that on your blade ? I know eventually it will wear down and be flush against the pavement just wondering if you cut the front edge on an angle so it rested flush on the ground? Thanks

    Once again, another great video. I do have a question though. So, you replaced the original carriage bolts with regular bolts with fender washers, correct? You mentioned they were 1 1/2 inches long. Might I ask, what size they were? It looks like 3/8 but its hard to tell. Thanks again for posting this recommendation as I plan to go this route as well.

      Hey Russ, only had a handful of opportunities. Been a bad winter as far as snow goes. However, I'm very glad I did it for several reasons. It is super quiet, I feel like I'm protecting my drive a lot more, and I don't have to worry about rust stains. I don't think it cuts through packed snow as well as steel, however I think it's pretty darn close.

    It looks like you went with the 1/2” thick by 2” wide version? Do you have an idea how far your bolt holes are from the edge of the plow blade itself?
    I want to put one on the 54” plow on my ATV. The manufacturer sells one, but it’s 3/4” thick (which I think is too much) and very expensive. I talked to the seller you got yours from and he has 2” and 4” widths, but the OEM one is 3”. I’m trying to figure out if I can get away with the 2” or if I need to step up to the 4” (which I worry may be too wide to sit flush).

    • @GoodWorksTractors
      @GoodWorksTractors  4 года назад

      Yes, I went with 2"...I think it was only a 1/4" overhang for the bottom edge. I matched it up with whatever the steel edge had for overhang.

    • @stevew4302
      @stevew4302 4 года назад

      Good Works Tractors Thanks! I just ordered the 2”. I took a closer look at my plow and with that size I should definitely have some overhang. I don’t know how much is the right amount, but I’ve got to figure you don’t want a ton or there will be a lot of extra force on it.

    • @stevew4302
      @stevew4302 4 года назад +2

      In case anyone comes across this, I just mounted the 1/2”x2” undrilled bar from the eBay seller on my 54” Warn ProVantage plow.
      I drilled 1/2” holes vertically centered. There is one right in the middle of the bar, and then 3 on each side at 8”, 16”, and 26” from the center. I opted to use the old steel bar on top and sandwich the UHMW one so the clamping force would be more even and so I could use carriage bolts like before. I couldn’t find M10-1.5 carriage bolts locally so I went with 3/8”. The originals are 1” so I went to 1.5” to account for the thickness of the new bar. Like before I used nylon lock nuts but decided to add washers as the nuts were smaller in overall diameter than the originals.
      We don’t have any snow in the forecast, but I’m sure I’ll get to try it out before the season is over. If not, I won’t be that disappointed.

      Good catch! The listing I purchased from as well as a couple of websites listed things along these lines. Upon looking a little further, I wonder if they are referencing the strength to weight ratio? Looks that is commonly listed as being significantly stronger for it's weight compared with steel? I also see the it listed as having much better wear resistance. Perhaps that's what they are associating with hardness? Dunno. Or, could be a slip of the tongue so to speak.
