LURE FISHING FOR BASS | LUCK OR INSTINCT | MEGABASS ZONK GATARIDE

- After a little break from bass fishing, I decided to try a mark after work one afternoon to see if I could hook into anything. As the day progressed, the weather brightened up, which wasn’t a good thing for bass fishing conditions. When I arrived at the mark, the sun was shining and the sea had flattened right out. Nonetheless, I started throwing some lures in search of a fish. The session would start very slowly until I finally got an indication of some fish being present when a bass came up behind a surface lure and took a big swipe at it. The fish failed to connect though so I clipped on a shallow running lure, the Megabass Zonk Gataride. Within 3 casts I was finally into a nice bass. Check out this video to see how the rest of the session went. Thanks for watching and see you on the next one 🎣

Lovely ! Nice one for Dinner mate !!🍽
spectacular views, great videos of you, keep it up!
Liked and shared.
Thanks as always David 👍🏼
Nice one as always mate!!
Just a rock fish for in here but no blank 😂
Out tomorrow!
Be lucky!
Nice one buddy. Great vid.
Cheers mate.
That first bass was a corker, Cal!
Luck or instinct? I think your catch record answers that, dude.
Keep the vids coming, mate, always greatly appreciated. 🤙
Brilliant Cal! How quickly one cast can change an entire session, huh? ;) Thanks as always for sharing mate - SMITHY 😉🤙🎣🐟
Thanks a lot Smithy!
Nice to see such a fish fest.
Hi mate just subscribed to your channel what was the lure u caught ya bass on
Great video and a fine bass. I sneaked out to my local creek for an hour this morning (supposed to be working) and landed a 43 cm bass. Not earth shattering I know, but after several blanks and a few fish not much bigger than my lure I was chuffed !
That’s awesome mate. It sets you up for the day when you catch before work doesn’t it 🤙🏼
As you said cal , not ideal conditions for bass
And like i say , any condition is you catch when god says
Hi Cal! I’ve only recently been attempting to fish and using lures I think is what I’d like to use. I’ve watched so many of your vids and I love all the action and angles etc. it’s brilliant! I’ve now been out for about 5 sessions with no luck, any tips for a first timer? You talked about conditions etc in this video, I didn’t ever think this would be an issue in calm sunny weather!
Hi mate. Thanks for checking out the videos 👍🏼 It can be difficult when you’re first starting out but just try to pick your marks properly. The sunny conditions don’t help when you’re fishing shallow ground but that’s not to say bass won’t be there on those kinda days. Look for patches of fast running tide and fish in that, or around the edges of it. Also any ground like boulder beds, weed beds, shallow reefs are really good. If it looks really snaggy then try a surface lure and slowly work that over the rough ground. This time of year there should be quite a few bass around, even if they’re small. Hope you get into a few soon. Good luck 👍🏼
Another good vid, you live in a great area for Bass obviously. Up here in Scotland it’s all Pollack. P.S. It looks a bit hard on the fish to hold them up whilst holding just the lower jaw. I’ve always thought the jaw bones and joint will be quite weak and not built to support the dead weight of the fish. Doesn’t it risk damaging or breaking the jaw ? Support both ends surely to better return the fish unharmed ?
Yeah it is best practice to support them under the belly too. I don’t think it does too much damage with the smaller ones to be honest but you are right yes.
👏👏👍👍
A big thumb up for using single hooks on your lures. Lot of anglers (old and young) should take example . One question: Is there a reason why your belly hook is mounted upside down ??
I recently changed a lot of my hard lures to singles. So much easier when unhooking fish and obviously they cause a lot less damage. I’ve changed the middle hook on that lure now to face the other way. There was no particular reason for it no.
@@FISHINGWITHCAL Yes well done for the explanations. A lot of anglers still think using single hooks is a big risk to miss fish but it's a big mistake to believe that😉
Out of interest, which conditions are best for bass, please mate? High/low tide? Overcast? Morning/evening? Choppy waves?
Also, I loved your mackerel filleting/cooking vid, and a bass one would be great 👌🏻
Bass love any where there is tide flow and whitewash in the water. Dawn and dusk on my opinion are best time . Overcast conditions are better but you can catch bass in bright sunshine with bright lures or silver foil metals.
In my opinion, ideal conditions for bass would be a bit overcast, a little bit of wind to create a slight chop to the water and oxygenated water! That could be from swell breaking onto/over a reef, a bit of surf, an under current, waves crashing against rocks, anything like that. I've always preferred early morning over last light. There are a lot of things that could be classed as ideal bass conditions, sometimes you can have perfect conditions but the fish just aren’t there and other times it could look like it's not even worth trying but you end up having a blinder! Tide flow would be the very first thing I'd look for at any spot regardless of the other conditions.
Sorry to.jump.on this thread, but would you be casting into the tidal flow or the slacks at the side of it. I've been putting some serious hours in Portugal at all tides and times of the day and night with very limited success lately. The mark (a Rocky bay with a headland and reef about 40yds offshore). definitely holds Bass as I had a lovely 6 1/2lber and missed another similar, but consistency seems difficult... lately Ive not had a touch on any lure there!
@@frags69 I'd fish the edges of the main current mostly but I'd also cast a lure right into the main flow of the tide too. It's surprising sometimes that the bass will be in the strongest part of the tide at times and at other times they'll be just out of it. I guess that’s to do with how much energy they’re willing to use to feed. Sometimes they can be just on the edge of the tide waiting for something to wash by. From everything I've heard about fishing in portugal mate, I wouldn’t just put it down to the conditions there. Many people struggle to find fish there by the sounds of it. At least you know you’re fishing the right places though! Good luck 👍🏼
Encore une très jolie vidéo ,Cal!
Je pêche le bar dans le Cotentin près de Carteret.
Est ce que ta canne/rod ,est de la marque Sansom lure? L'Expanse ???
Quel est ton modèle ?
Merci😊
Another very nice video, Cal!
I fish for bass in the Cotentin near Carteret.
Is your canne/rod a Sansom lure brand? The Expansion???
What is your model?
THANKS
Merci! I have two of the Samson rods. One of them is the Expanse which I’ve not used too many times yet. It’s 15-60g and the other one is the heavier version which is 30-100g. Solid rods! I’ll be using the Expanse more often soon.
@@FISHINGWITHCAL super j have the two rods, too. J ve recently tried the 15/60 gr. That light version is tip top. Tip top. And j m xaiting for holidays, non.
Best regards. Charles Édouard
Great job as Always. Do you remember the number of the Zonk's hooks? Thanks
Thanks. I think they’re size 4’s if I remember rightly.
Hi mate what line do you use and do you use leader ?
Hi mate. I use 20lb braid by Samson Fishing. I use a leader yeah, usually about 3ft of 20lb fluorocarbon 👍🏼
Did you ever watch fishing with Mike the Irish guy
I've heard of him but I've not watched any of his videos. I'll check him out 👍🏼
@@FISHINGWITHCAL just waiting for you to get a kayak for sea fishing 🎣 😀
@@ShamRockReelDeal I have a kayak, although I've only been out on it 3 times and fallen out of it once already 😂
@FISHING WITH CAL would you not just get the stabilisers for it I got them and you can stand up on the kayak
@@ShamRockReelDeal a catamaran then 😂😂 tight lines bud
30 quid for a piece of plastic
Where are you?
He’s in Guernsey 😊
Oh and I lost a Patchinko which pissed me off 😢
I feel your pain, Glen.
Out fishing the Fal estuary, here in Cornwall, only ever owned one patchinko, which I bought after watching Cal catch on them again and again.
About the tenth cast I made, I heard the snap, new instantly my sorry attempt at an FG knot had given up the ghost, and off my patch went, sailing off into the great blue yonder.
£27 worth of lure. It ain't no joke! Chinese copies from now on then? 😁
@@PilzE. Oh no mate!!
Father Christmas maybe!
Be lucky!
@Feckin Fishin 😆 😅 😂 🤣
Used either an albrite or double uni for years fishing for pike and perch, and NEVER had one give up on me. That FG is just too sexy to ignore though, I just need to practice more!!!
@@glendockree9171 More chance Santa will bring one than the Missus releasing 30 quid for _“Another bloody lure!!!”_ 😒
@Feckin Fishin Oh fuck, I am so damned limited, I'm retarded! 🤓
