    Thanks for making this video. It really helped me out with the bearing replacement on my mower spindles. And you are so right about the new bearings having little grease in them. I ordered a whole pack of new bearings and greased em all up.
    Thanks again.

      Yeah if they put grease in them from the factory they would last a long time. Thanks for Watching!!!

    Best video on replacing bearings. Wish I could have seen this 2 days ago, took mine to a shop and they put it in a press and destroyed it. Oh and now buy a new shaft and bearings. Now pay me for destroying your part. Cost me as much as a new shaft with bearings. If need be to replace bearings again, I’ll save your video. Thanks so much for the great video.

      Appreciate that! Oh wow, hate to hear that. Usually do not need a press, they usually come right out. Your welcome, Thanks for Watching!!!

    I got a noisy bearing in one of my spindles and it’s less than a year old I think I’ll just take the bearing out and pack them with grease snd hope it gets me thru the rest of this summer

    When I had the old belt drive 4-foot ExMark I rebuilt 2 out of 3 spindles. The bearings were pilot bearings out of a small Cat engine and I took the inside seals out of both bearings so they'd take grease. My 42 inch Craftsman is mainly a joke. The 'mulching'
    holes in the deck just let grass come up and rust the deck out because it just has small pieces to support the spindle in 3 places AND will wring off the legs of the spindle when you try and take them off. Self-locking bolts and small aluminum legs = BAD combination. So when the new deck shell came I poured those holes full of epoxy resin to stop the grass spewing up and strengthen the spindle mounts. AND I also drilled the threads out of the spindle mount legs and put them on the deck with bolts, washers and nuts so I can get them off without breaking the legs off. Now I can blow all the grass off the deck top and everything works a lot better. I've used a bearing packer like that and they work FINE but I'm hand packing now. Maybe one day! And I see below I'm not the only one waiting for a tune. You always do a fine job and THANKS, Pal!

      I hear ya! Troybilts and alot of others are made like that to, and your right it makes them rust out quicker and they are weak. Thats a good idea to fill it in. I don't like that way of mounting either, it doesn't take much to break the housing on them. I hear ya! nothing wrong with packing by hand. It may be quicker and easier, and just as good for these sealed type bearings. haha i hear ya! Thanks for Watching!!!

      I think it took 2 cans of resin and a couple of tubes of hardener to fill the holes flush but it works like a dream! You can blow everything off the deck and the resin keeps all the junk on the main part of the deck so it doesn't rust out in a few minutes. Mulching decks are a joke in themselves unless you cut the grass several times a week because long grass blades won't act right and just cake up. I'd rather run Gator blades to shred whatever you have. Keep on, Pal and we're still waiting for that instrumental!

    You put the spindle in upside down on the first one. The three bolts were on the top side originally, but you put them on the bottom. I guess that it will still work that way, but you should be careful. The bearing cover that is on the blade side, goes next to the bearing cup with the stop. You put that cover next to the bearing cup without the stop.

      I basically followed what you did to replace the bearings on my MTD (they were identical to yours). I manually packed the four bearings with grease so that they will last longer. I only wish that I had a hydraulic press to help out. When I started the mower after the new bearings were in, I thought that something was wrong, because I could no longer hear the mower howl!

      @@stevek5416 I hear ya! haha I just took this a step further, i finally figured out a way to add grease fittings to these, i had to drill all the way down the shaft and through it in between where the bearings are. it works, but it was a pain to do! (future video). but packing them like this makes a huge difference since there is basically no grease in them to start with.

      @aleon1018 haha yeah to much grease is just as bad as not enough. I have a more recent video on adding grease fittings to this type of spindle, its took alot of work but i got them done. I grease it about every other time i mow. I've been using a wheel bearing grease and it seems to hold up good. it takes the heat better.

    What is the quill/spindle part number for this Montgomery wards mower? And are they all the same? Mine is approximately 5 1/2” tall. Is that the right height?

    Sounds like you're getting over a cold. Those chewed up spindles are good scrap for lathe use.

      @fnaguitarplayer9  6 лет назад +1

      Allergies! Now I do have cold haha That is a good idea, i've been wanting to get a small benchtop lathe for doing some work for some projects coming up. Thanks for Watching!!!

    • @johnstrange6799
      @johnstrange6799 6 лет назад

      Oh no! lol I'm flirting with a cold myself right now. My system can't figure
      out which season it is. Opinions and circumstances will vary of course, but if you're going to get into the lathe game, I say go as big, heavy, and as powerful as you can the first time around. Think of it as me wanting to put an 8hp in a riding mower and you saying a 12hp or 15hp is what you would go with. :)

    You are NOT supposed to pack a bearing full it creates HEAT
    Check with a real bearing supply co
    Bad advice
