Actually if am not wrong,i think that each number is and should be pronounced individually to limit that confusion.like for example, one three two eight.
joel njuguna It sounds reasonable but at the same time in busy airways you have to speak fast but clear. Pronouncing each number takes a while and can cause jamming. Eveb then the radios dont clear completely as you can pick up the 28 more than the 38 or 13... Like saying thirteen hundred vs one thousand three hundred vs one, three, zero, zero.
Correct. Actually, the FAA investigation report said the same thing. As per FAA recommendation, flight numbers with similar sounding must be scheduled far enough apart from one another to prevent this incident from ever happening again.
Dr. Drew This has absolutely nothing to do with the airport design. Probably around 80% of airports on this planet (earth if you're actually from here) have runways crossing like this. They are designed so that with it being a big airport, planes will never have to make heavy and difficult crosswinds landings while traffic is full and busy. It is alright for two aircraft to take off from two different runways with a 90° difference and the only issue here was the confusion by both the tower and pilots who were not clearly understanding that one callsign was "1328" while the other was "3828" or whatever. Don't correct me if those were the exact call signs but you get the point, they're both very similar and that was the issue and confusion here.
Yeah, that was a very unfortunate confluence of nearly identical flight numbers. You'd think that with more than 10,000 numbers to choose from, the Powers That Be could choose a couple of flight numbers for different flights that aren't so similar.
Erich Hartmann "The planet" is not just US. I checked for Europe's busiest airports. There is a procedure that allows intersecting runways to be used at the same time, so long as there is significant spacing between traffic. Its called Landing and Hold Short Operations. I think in this instance, there was a confusion over their callsigns.
What happened there is the inherent danger in RF based communications. There's nothing stopping two people from talking at the same time on the same frequency. This is what they're referring to as "stepping" on someone. This issue has caused many catastrophes in the past, and is why the FAA mandates that all conversations between ATC and pilots both begin and end with the carrier name and flight number. It's not a perfect system, as this situation demonstrates. It's amazing that in this day and age we're still using basically the same technology that they used 70 years ago to communicate with and track aircraft - namely radar and radio. There are better ways to do this now.
Jimbo 0117 Well you dont have to worry about this for much longer. Next Gen is almost fully rolled out and planes arent using voice communications anymore for takeoff clearance. Its all data, texted back and forth
@ Coisinhas: That's not uncommon at all. San Francisco International Airport has four runways -- two sets of parallel runways that are perpendicular to each other. It's not a problem as long as the pilots do what they're told.
ram naslai I know right! Crossing runways should be for those regional airports that only hold 10-12 planes every 2 hours, not an international airport that holds 40-50 planes every 2 hours.
Mohamed Dahcheh Actually, chicago was called the windy city because the politicians in the late 19th to early 20th century had “heads full of hot air,” but yeah, the city of chicago is pretty windy due to the lakefront of lake michigan
It tends to be the last 2 digits of an aircraft's callsign that can be mis-heard, and controllers often advise potentially conflicting flights of other flights with similar callsigns.
no, I'm a student pilot. *yes I'm only 13* and No one ever says it like that on live transmission. The only changed number is nine. For example 1439 is pernounced fourteen- thirty niner
The numbers in their call signs were 1328 and 3828. An incident occured at another airport when two of the planes both had 152 in their call sign. The US president was on a flight with call sign Air Force 6081 and Eastern Airlines flight 6081 was in the same airspace and almost disaster. Since then Air Force 1 has been the unique call sign for the US presidents flights.
I hate when news people step foot onto Aviation ground. They make it bigger then it is. They make people scared of planes when they should be talking about how bad it is to drive a vehicle in this world. Planes are 99.9% safer then a vehicle.
Honestly, who made 2 tracks like that? Parallel are safer, if it's windy I guess pilots are well trained for those conditions and if they can't land they simply abort.
This video illustrates what President Trump was talking about when he said we need to privatize ATC. Government is horrible at giving clear instructions.
Captain Quirk Of course you don't see the connection because you've been brainwashed by statist propaganda. You gotta start thinking about our potentials free from govt intervention. I know it's hard because nearly every business is intertwined with the govt. So many people say the free market has failed, yet they've never even seen a free market because it hasn't existed in over 100 years.
...Brainwashed... So your saying someone was effectively brainwashed only 6 months after someone took office... If someone doesnt agree with your statement and that means they are brainwashed to you, you sir are the idiot, not Captain Quirk. So how about you go to college like the rest of us and understand how business really works you liberal idiot.
3828 and 1328, I can understand the confusion, when said quickly they sound almost the same
Yeah, it's extremely unfortunate that the flight numbers are almost identical.
Actually if am not wrong,i think that each number is and should be pronounced individually to limit that confusion.like for example, one three two eight.

Plus the static
"It's your turn! Hurry up!"
Great airport design.

Actually less than 20% airport have cross runway normally parallel runway if you said 80% that only in USA
all I'm thinking of is Tenerife
Ikr
Ali V What do you mean ? I'm there right now 🌞
Tenerife was the site of (I think) the worst plane disaster in history.
ZestraX
Search it. Plane disaster of Tenerife when a KLM (Netherlands) flight and a Pan American(murica) flight crashed into eachother
Hperik hee murica bitches

Jimbo 0117 But is there a better way of communicating?
Jimbo 0117 Well you dont have to worry about this for much longer. Next Gen is almost fully rolled out and planes arent using voice communications anymore for takeoff clearance. Its all data, texted back and forth
Ashley McCallum Yes, its called Next Gen. And its almost done.
Does the pilot text confirmation that he has received the instruction?
Ashley McCallum Yes its a 2 way data link.
"STOP STOP STOP!" Clearest ATC I've ever heard, they mumble and slur usually.
And speak intirely too fast.
Who was the genious who made 2 tracks crossing in an airport?
It actually allwos plains to take off aginst the wind
Coisinhas do dia a dia It happens at a lot of airports. You will see this if you've ever been to Earth.
+ Coisinhas do dia a dia
There's a stop sign at the intersection. What more do you want?
@ Coisinhas: That's not uncommon at all. San Francisco International Airport has four runways -- two sets of parallel runways that are perpendicular to each other. It's not a problem as long as the pilots do what they're told.
Captain Quirk But at SFO, they take off and land parallel to eachother. So if one plane is clear for takeoff, so is the other.
Why have 2 flights with such similar call signs take off so close together
So two plans in midway met at the midway of the runway? hahaha
Who the great person made this design cross runways
ram naslai I know right! Crossing runways should be for those regional airports that only hold 10-12 planes every 2 hours, not an international airport that holds 40-50 planes every 2 hours.
FSUfanOFtheBAND imagine a interception runway at lax
it is about WIND....this is the best design so that no matter where the wind is from, the aircraft always have a headwind for the most part
So many airports have runways crossing each other due to wind and Chicago is called the "windy city" for a reason.
Shouldn't be saying "thirty-eight twenty-eight" anyways. "Three eight two eight".
no, I'm a student pilot. *yes I'm only 13* and No one ever says it like that on live transmission. The only changed number is nine. For example 1439 is pernounced fourteen- thirty niner
FullAutoAirsoft 13 and a student?
Henry23Jansen Games yes sir
This is more proof Air Traffic Control is overworked.
99% of the comments are people bitching about the airport design
1% are people saying “Tenerife part 2”
LAX Aviation lol😂
The runways intersect. Brilliant !
The Southwest plane was going to Tulsa, which is where I live
INTER-SECTING RUNWAYS - these should be at every airport. keeps pilots awake.........
Blame Russia
This could have been tenerife airport disaster all over again
AMAZING Designer

This has been a problem in aviation since the invention of the radio. The quickest solution is to give all pilots their own call sign.
They, do......
Yeah, and they do, and that was the exact problem here; the two callsigns were almost identical.
I hate when news people step foot onto Aviation ground. They make it bigger then it is. They make people scared of planes when they should be talking about how bad it is to drive a vehicle in this world. Planes are 99.9% safer then a vehicle.
Are planes not vehicles?
The Ender Golem haha true
Jarrod Estepp REKT!
Planes r vehicles but I get wat u mean
Without the "sterile cockpit rule" there would probably have been a collision.
_Safety is our number one priority_
*I've heard that before*
All the people saying "designing cross-runways are stupid or not safe"
Well Don't use sanfransisco airport if you hate cross runways
Should have advised pilots of similar/like callsigns before issuing any control instructions.
The ATC should've made this clearer. He should have addressed them as Delta-Alpha-Lima1328.
Safety is number one priority
I want to be on the Southwest Plane taking off
“Ya know, that other plane is getting kinda close”
The is normal in Infinite Flight.
Don’t Read My Profile Picture lol
Don’t Read My Profile Picture Yes XD
😂😂
Don’t Read My Profile Picture no whats even more normal is planes actually crossing the intersection at the same time lol
china😂😂
Who let such similar callsigns be issued?
We need to install traffic lights at the intersect of run-way.
I wanna know what Kate did on her day off.
11-27-17
Thought rule of thumb is all planes land or takeoff in same direction to prevent this
Johnnie Ceee impossible. airports flights would be delayed all the time.
Relax, Normal takeoff maneuvers and procedures, reason why this airport is called: "Midway Airport!
"catostrophic" "aircraft this size" bruh😂😂😂👌👌👌
It would help if the two flight numbers weren't almost identical to each other. Jeez.
How is this breaking news though, man back in New Zealand this would never be breaking news.
CRAZY RUSSIAN HACKER : SAFETY IS NUMBER 1 PRIORITY
loukasyama I was thinking the eaxact same thing lol
This must be why the airport is called Midway
E63 S ...oooooo, good one..
They almost crashed at the midway point at midway
Who builds an airport like that
Guys, does anyone notice that they have the same 4 digits
Ethan Greaser no they dont
I know I'm late but I'm sure someone got fired.
or at least pilot deviation.
Tenierife almost repeated itself
wow that was close!
Why not use tried and tested method... TRAFFIC LIGHTS!!!
Crazy Air Traffic Controller! He could be sacked, good.
Dang why not United?
2:22 movie in real life.
People very lucky and god blessed
Who on Earth makes an intersected runway
Many runways do at most airports
Someone with a brain. They are like that so that way if there are crosswinds they can take a different runway.
Lugwardia flight 1549 crashed Hudson birdstrike runway 4
US Airways
"Alright Susan Thank You"
*Its hard to be trafic controller the lives of many people is in your hands*
Close call. But thank for the extra eye on the ground save lifes!
Why would there be an intersection IN AN AIRPORT LMAO great design! Brilliant
only one its so planes don't have a bad crosswind when taking off or landing.
Most airports have intersecting runways
I bet the controller was fired
Honestly, who made 2 tracks like that? Parallel are safer, if it's windy I guess pilots are well trained for those conditions and if they can't land they simply abort.
Juan José Del Pino Rivas CROSSWIND
Wheew im glad it isnt Air Canada
Where do I land? X marks the spot.
I almost got ran over by a car luckily he stopped a mile away from me
Hey guys welcome back to my laboratory where safety is number one priority!
-CrazyRussianHacker
Feels like Pan Am and KLM repeating itself...
Passenger safety, huh? Yet they beat up some passengers.
That was United, not Delta or Southwest
This video is about how make a 10 sec video longer than 2 minutes.
if i was a pilot and the atc said to stop while im like 50 knots i would have pulled up even if i had not enough speed
Boi how is it supposed to get off the ground at 50 knots?
pull the yoke and pray
That's why you're NOT a pilot! And never will be.
Extreme Aviator you cant
@@ammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Won't even have enough speed to lift off and stall. Probably not even enough speed to shake tbe plane.
What if there was fog
Tenerife....
SidLIFE except those two planes were on the same runway
That’s why you fly at ORD
*cough* *cough* Tenerife *cough*
Tenerife part 2
2 runways 4 different wind directions not peculiar at all
The air traffic controller was related to Hillary Clinton. "It's not my fault man ...no way ....pass the tampons !".
3 Stooges designed that airport and the 4th Stooge was in control tower
Close collision
well somebody F top!!! in control room
Lol really? An “X” design runways? Is this the xmens secret base or something? Who does that lol.
Tenerife! Motherfuker Tenerife!
Am I the only one who wanted to see them crash?
Its a stupid runway design
this is totally rubbish runway design.
ATC......SUCKS
This video illustrates what President Trump was talking about when he said we need to privatize ATC. Government is horrible at giving clear instructions.

Clarence Aaron Jones so.. in lieu of actual arguments and facts you relied on the brainwashing defense? nice, better stock up on tinfoil
HELL OOH EVEBOODY WELCUM TO DE RUSHIN HACKUH WARE SAFE IS NUM WUN PRIORTEE
