How To Make Vietnamese Pizza aka Bánh Tráng Nuong with Di an Di

- Dennis Ngo from Di an Di in NYC stopped by the MUNCHIES Test Kitchen to make Banh Trang Nuong. This Vietnamese pizza isn’t your typical pie. Grilled rice paper is loaded with homemade scallion oil, egg, littleneck clams, sweet chili sauce, micro chives, and crushed peanuts to make this Vietnamese street food staple.

VN original Bánh tráng nướng is simple but tasty
No need for high quality stuffs
you know it's good when the chef says it's "totally acceptable"
As a Vietnamese who eats a lot of bánh tráng in different types and forms, I have never and will never be able to imagine bánh tráng nướng made like this 😂
Am Vietnamese and they are very good
Man this aint bánh tráng nướng my man ????
me sitting here eating 30 cent ramen*
interesting
I bet we can make pizza outta that ramen
You could probably find this on the street that costs $0.25 and it's a nice snack
Holy fuck i thought iwas the only one.
This is probably the more high-end version of Bánh Tráng Nướng for real, the normal local street under 1$ version of this snack usually have little shrimp called Tép instead of clam and I don't even think we use chives at all, then for some places, they gonna put some cheese and sausage to it with normal hot sauce like those good ol' Cholimex and sometimes Sriracha, and damn I almost forgot, we gotta put some Mayo to it too, and for the meat, we use minced pork. Ah shite another thing, for Da Lat version of Bánh Tráng Nướng, they will cut them into pieces like pizza, but for the Saigon ver, they gonna fold them in half and wrap it with the most Asian thing ever, newspaper baby, ya dig
Chive here is pretty much taste like green onion
I’ve tried these in Saigon and Sapa but never had one of them with cheese in it. Kinda wish I did.
That's call Ruốc not Tép bro
@@Andy-lr1gx ah yeah, I'm trippin' dawg
Đức Ân - Andy Nguyen it’s the same bro. Tep or Ruoc is the same thing but depends on where you live in Vietnam.
For every Viet and non-Viet person feeling some type of way about it being called "pizza," the western name for this dish and for banh xeo is "pizza" to help foreigners get an approximation for what to expect when they have no idea what it could be if trying it for the first time. Once they do, you can introduce them to the real name, but there's no need to be dramatic. Personally feel like it might be more helpful to correct misnomers on egg rolls vs spring rolls (not summer rolls), or the correct spelling of BANH from bahn (which is an egregious error imo--if you're going to appropriate or serve the damn dish at your restaurant, at least spell the dish correctly).
Stfu
Timmygisbetterthan Packercard87sucks = internet bitch
literally nobody calling Banh Xeo as pizza lmao, nobody.
I think a vietnamese crepe would be the right definition to define banh xeo.
Born and raise in Vietnam. And bánh xèo is not a Pizza nor a type of Pizza
This guy over doing it. The banh Trang in Vietnam be like fifty cent he making it for twenty dollars.
Would love to try that as an appetizer! Fresh, high quality toppings, nice crispy texture~~ Dennis, save one for us 🕺
I love you're cooking video's!!!!!!!
the way he pronounces it in Vietnamese bothers me lol
And the title too...Bánh Tráng ‘Nuong’
Ironically, it's always Vietnamese criticizing Vietnamese....typical. I hope your English is better than his.
AT T criticizing*
@@burgerpatty oh the irony
@@att7737 Maybe because native speakers know about their own language better than you do? You sound like a stereotypical monolingual English speaker.
Simple and straight to the point. Pretty great recipe.
Nooooo where's my laughing cow, kewpie& sausages?
I had a vietnamese chicken sandwich that changed my LIFE! ONE OF THE BEST THINGS INEVER ATE OMG
Damn the only thing I ever ate that changed my life was a bowl of clam chowder that gave me food poisoning.
This is the ultimate street food in Vietnam, like everykids every students eat it 😂
nah
@@krisdang yes
Nah maybe now yes cuz modernization... lmao
Could be true in the South. Northern? No
Dang, home boi throwing clams onto banh trang nuong. Best to eat em cheap on the street, this is way too fancy hohaha
This is the worst btn i've ever seen....
Bet the 20 cent btn in VN will taste better...
?!? NANI have you tried it ?
Jealous.... typical Vietnamese
@@att7737 ok you're just being racist now
@@atlasthechamp82 You think? Cuz I'm Vietnamese.
@@att7737 im Vietnamese too...so is this a self-burn?
don't know how i feel about this being called a pizza... (viet btw)
I think I'd just go for a Bánh Xèo instead...
It's more of a pizza shaped foodstuff, still looks good tbh.
It's just a nickname. Americans call chả giò "egg rolls" even though there's no egg in it.
Viet here too, but I understand it for familiarity-especially if you think about non-viets going to a restaurant, and seeing it on a menu. Allows customers to grasp the idea better, and potentially actually order it on a menu instead of taking a shot in the dark on it (Similar to how banh xeo is called “sizzling crepe” in some restaurants).
It is a fucking unroled thai springroll not a pizza
Definitely ain’t pizza but I’d still try it, I enjoy rice paper too.
Nah bro keep it simple and actually fold it together like a sandwich. They used sausages, dried mini shrimps, and pork floss. This vid is too much work. They don’t eat it like this in Vietnam. It’s more of a sandwich style than pizza🙄 you gotta load that sh*t up also, yours be lookin too plain over there
Not really, you're eating the normal version, which doesn't have lots of topping so it can be easily folded. What he makes is Banh trang nuong Da Lat, which are full of toppings, and quite more mouthful, so you serve it like that and cut them with a scissors and can share with your group of friends. He did it right, his toppings are fancy though, we wish we have some fancy Banh Tranh Nuong here where they are more experiment with the toppings tbh.
What's with the Marvel vs Capcom 2 music on the background?
Bruh da og way to make that is with a charcoal grill not a charbroiler
How is this man pulling off this haircut. I try shit like this and I look like fucking Bert.
As someone who's from Dalat, the origin of Banh Trang Nuong, I'm very offended that you called it "Vietnamese pizza", no, it's called "Banh Trang Nuong" and on top of that, the dish is not this complicated, so complicated to the point that it's not even Banh Trang Nuong anymore. We never have clam and peanut on it, what the fuck, that's stupid.
Perharps the modified version i guess
@@finefreshbread3243 no, i don't think it's as good. It's like garlic bread, but he replaces garlic with yogurt
@@raccoon9023 yeah i definietly agree, the way he uses clam AND peanut and some fucking sweet and sour sauce actually killed the meal, the ingredients are supposed to be
2 banh trang sticked together by EGG WASH
Cover the 2nd banh trang with egg wash
Spring onion
Some chunky fried prawn meat
Jam bon
And hot sauce
Add the chunky beef and the onion is optional but holy fucking shit clam and fucking peanut? Is he high? he didnt even eat it the correct way. By folding it into half and bite. This guy have no idea about our culture. But still a creative fake ass combination tho if thats what he has been taught doing
1. Nice video. I’m going to have make the journey all the way from Williamsburg to Greenpoint to taste this.
2. I can see why, if you’re used to cooking on a grill, that you’d try using a grill pan. However, given the fact that you’re already dealing with an inferior heat source, and that you want even heat rather than grill marks, wouldn’t a griddle or skillet make more sense than a grill pan?
If you put the scallions in the bowl before you strain the hot lard over it, you could save yourself from washing another pan! There's enough heat to cook the scallion and release the flavors
this one is vastly different from that in vietnam. You add some twists to it. it looks mouth-watering tho
Literally never seen this kind of Bánh tráng nướng in vietnamese street before lmao
bro! you're the owner of your restaurant can you at least pronounce your restaurant name correctly! i know you know this but either shy or want to cater to white folks by saying it that way...
It’s called anglicisation ya dummy
The ultimate killer ‼️ I’m allergic to gluten, shellfish & nuts 🥴
there wouldn't be any gluten in this dish unless the vinegar had malt in it, so you could make this with different toppings
m camrynn ummm there is no gluten and you can make it without shellfish and nuts
If he had the pan hotter it would've of worked, its cast iron
If you do the og way which is more more good than this ones
Subscribed cause of this vid. But this is boujee and extra LOL. There are countless versions of this dish, definitely easier/quicker ways. I actually associate this as a lazy snack when idk what to eat. I’ll definitely be trying this again with double rice paper!
The amount of gatekeeping in this comment section is too damn high
Or you can just call it an open rice paper roll.....
Radical Turbine no
Spring roll*
jasonle0 a spring roll is as the name states “rolled”. This is not you could have chosen to say open spring roll in which case you’d still be wrong hahaha
like a calzone is a rolled pizza and still called pizza
You have to think about it from a business perspective. What sounds better and more familiar? Open Rice Paper Roll? Or Vietnamese pizza. I’m sure he doesn’t really consider it as pizza but from a business perspective it’s always smarter to make things sound more relatable/familiar.
Bruh everyone knows that banh xeo is the og vietnamese pizza...
A banh xeo looks nothing like a pizza...its shaped as an omelette LOL
@@Tkenny35 still i wouldn't consider this dish the viet pizza
Looks gross. Terrible idea.
I really enjoyed your commentary thanks for the great video.
Real Vietnamese street food people makes the real kind, the best ones
I have a hard time calling this Vietnamese pizza, because it isn’t. I am confused as to why it was termed that way. To help non-Vietnamese get an idea of what it is? Pizza is bread whereas this is grilled rice paper-which is the literal translation. To give it a western name is misleading. There us nothing pizza about this.
imagine its cold af in the high-land and have one these steaming hot just out of the grill... man that good eating
We Vietnamese people dont eat banh trang nuong like this ... I dont know why this guy claims "the classic banh trang nuong" but he puts tons of fucking nonsense ingredients in there. Like wtf bro just keep the snack simple.
He's American trying to make a Vietnamese dish. It may taste good, but definitely not authentic. Don't call it Vietnamese. Call it an experimental Vietnamese dish. He even said it himself he's not sure how this will taste.
I just love that tentagonal or whatever that pan called he cooked the clams in 😍
Why would anyone wanna make this? Lmao
Why waste time making the chili sauce. When you can buy good quality for a reasonable price.
Best Vietnam Street food i have ever had. So god damn delicious
Such a cool snack and you decorate it nicely. I also like the restaurant's name, either say it in English or in Vietnamese
Outstanding.
Water was the main ingredient lmao
Fancy version of “ Banh Trang Nuong “ with clams.
Clams on btn? What the..
His pronunciation of Viet words is awful. He needs to go to grammar school!
I’ll need about 15 of those to get full.
15 is not enough :))
it packs tons of protein and fat, maybe not much carb but a few of those would fill you up nicely
Nathan N They’re street food snacks.
still dont know why he putted water so much. it's enough to get moisture from the ingredients
I'm sure Gerald has his own restaurant by now. Does anyone know?

@@HungLong59 bánh tráng nướng đi quét mỡ hành trước, haizz
Looks like plastic.
The paper itself is made of rice. Typically, you're supposed to wet the rice paper and and ingredients and roll it, but us Vietnamese got creative with it.
6:30 lol he doesn't know that glaze does not equal drizzle...
Sounds like a quiet heart attack pizza. So much oil and little protein.
cool dude.
He changed the recipe a little bit cuz the traditional one in vietnam doesnt look that nice .-.
It looks prettier than the one he made tbh.............
You haven't tried high quality banh trang nuong it seems
I just mean it looks more fancy than the traditional one :)))
And It definitely tastes better :))))
Plz make bánh xèo too is very good :))

totally acceptable, what kind of taste is that? 😂
How does this piece of paper fill someone up?
It's a snack, chill
Tan Tran oh my bad G my bad 😪
the beer fills you up
Ever since I watched Alex French Guy cooking's series on rice paper dishes I've been using it for everything. It's light but satisfying(probably coz rice is a starch)
Apologize right now for calling this pizza
My dad’s trick is to pop it if the microwave. Seriously, it works and gets super puffy.
His voice is so soothing to me
Everyone have an opinion about anything. Everyone put on a twist on foods; It’s called creativity. My last name is Nguyen. Win win banh Trang nuong for dinner.
This guy is from zohan where tf his glasses at ?
Scallion oil/fat is a game changer
You made this way too complicated lol
This does not look appetizing at all
Good w the sugar lol very healthy
Too clean and high quality man ... and not using charcoal is a no no , butter / oil first , and meat , protein second ,and whatever you want ... and the cheapest ingredients the better ...anyway I think he just don’t research enough
Ban trang nuon di n di, say that 3 times
Who is really going to do this at home. Honestly.
@Noah Eden Please show me. Thanks.
Noah Eden I’m still waiting for the pictures Noah... this is a ridiculous dish that I see no tradition in... so come on Noah, show me the pictures
Noah Eden don’t be scared. RUclips please.
This is so wrong its embarrassing
Superitendent chalmers steamed clams
this one is actually NOT in restaurants because its only sold on the street. and you don’t need that must sugar tho :v
Where can I find those shears?
the ordinary people selling bánh tráng nướng on the street can even make better bánh tráng nướng than the ones he made. but goodjob anyway
tapioca also is more nutritious then standard wheatflour nice1^^
guess makes a good wrap also
I can’t like 2-3 in one sitting
That was a fuck ton of sugar
This dude is better than the girl who cooks in one pan video , she trie to hard to be likable ...
Ooh i missed this and bahn mi. Whats do you call the egg with pepper and other stuff inside it?
Cannot see any street vendors using micro herbs however his “pizza” does look tasty
i will stick to Italian Pizza lol too much headache doing it and oh yeh?????? not enough sugar lol
nice
This guy made it way to difficult... that ain't my Vietnamese Pizza duhhh.
I'm allergic to peanuts and shellfish
cool stuff!
this is no where near the authentic Bánh tráng nướng we have in our hometown m8
need some mayo
The rice paper didn’t even fully puff up, sir. They gonna stick to ur mouth when u bite into them and it is gonna be extremely unpleasant to eat
totally acceptable
40% vietnam
No thanks
clam?...
It's great, but it's not pizza, not even close.
It's not pizza because it's not pizza, people didn't even called it pizza in vietnam, the only reason why it's called pizza because of foreigners tourists calling it that
no shit sherlock. you cracked the case.
