Charles Carmakal, chief technology officer of Mandiant Consulting, the security consulting organization of Google Cloud, joins CBS News to discuss how the hack is crippling operations, and what can be done to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

lol I have no sympathy for car dealers
Right. Car prices doubled in 2 years because of these greedy dealerships.
@@PhiLLyPhiLLz Greedy labor unions
@@Wolfcamp555im pretty sure the manufacturer gives MSRP, than dealers sell at the price they want. There is a reason why cars are more expensive from a middle man
Why? they not forcing you buy/service a car
Yeah, the 99.8% of them give the 0.2% a bad reputation.
My dealership is messed up too, I was there last week for service and we were doing everything by paper and Airdrop.
Same here. Everything the way it was done before computers. Before typewriters too, since those don't exist in most businesses anymore.
I had to buy a part from a local dealership so I could fix my own vehicle and it was an extra PITA and I literally got a handwritten receipt.
Stop using the stupid term "Threat Actors." Just say "Hackers!" omg...seriously
Move back to Main Frame/Mini environments and use 3270 type terminals for access to the systems. Pretty hard to hack a system you can't get to from outside.
Situations like this are why it's important to have a disaster recovery plan in place and tested thoroughly so you don't have to meet the demands of cybercriminals and can recover quickly.
He really did not do a good job putting this stuff into laymen’s terms, coming from someone who works in cybersecurity. It’s important to really clearly communicate what the issues are and what people can do to defend against them, if you are too vague/assume the audience knows more then they do you miss the opportunity to hammer home the importance of taking these defensive measures.
Correct
Oh please
There is nothing that man can’t make that man can’t Hack , duh
this is great
I feel like some USB drives were dropped and sales personnel just plugged those in... cyber security training doesn't seem like a high priority.
It's an online training module, but most people just click through it. One would hope common sense would prevail, but it's not that common anymore.
Outage with less car demand due to higher interest rates and high car prices… means we can likely get a heck of a deal.
There will be no deals, prices will go up to compensate lost revenue. Still lots of fools that will pay obscene prices, and astronomical interest rates. Nothing will change
@@USMC0311-jz5gy where are you?
Well still down
CDK is back at some stores but not 100%
Time to switch services lol not the only one out there
Use paper

Keep your core business systems local and off the grid.🤔
Helps you defend but limits what those systems can do. Businesses need to way the cost/benefit of using software like cdk.
I'm not sure you understand the amount of money that would take. Prices of parts and labor would go up even further in order to cover the cost of running and maintaining an entire operations server locally power alone for JUST my service shop runs around 20K a month. That's JUST power, not gas, water, propane, on site gasoline, waste oil disposal, fresh oil resupply, etc. Service and Sales together don't make enough money to make it worth it to add server maintenance, installation, power demands, etc.
Several weeks is more than a month and pretty much the same thing as a few months.
Several weeks is 3 weeks +… so no not really
How can cars built in America cost 50k but I can get a Mitsubishi for 20k
Cause that Mitsubishi is a pos and they’re always cheap , don’t compare a mustang gt to that 😂
CRIPPLED
Cool, now they’ll have another excuse to charge more for cars.
Wah wah wah
This is a gift 🎁 dealership’s have been taking advantage of consumers for too long without government providing consumer protections especially during COVID times. Dealerships artificially inflated prices and called it “market Adjustment “ 😂 karma to the rescue 😂
This expert is talking to his peers and not to the general public. Find someone else.
Why should it take a few weeks? If effectively backed up daily behind a secure firewall, systems should be able to be scanned, secured, and restored in days, no?
Well, they have to find the vulnerabilities in the system and fix them. Then they have to run a boatload of tests. It isn't as easy and quick as flipping a switch. It wouldn't surprise me if they would end up turning everything on without being 100% sure they fixed all vulnerabilities. In reality, they'll never get rid of all of them. There is no such thing as a completely secure system.
Windows OS is easier for hackers to accomplish. Corporations are stuck with Windows OS.
If they pay the hackers I'll boycott
That's what the dealership gets! Charging ridiculous fees and charges vehicles over MSRP.
hahahahaha
If it was me, I would rebuild the whole system
Good riddance, car dealerships bump up the price of these cars
woo hooo keep it going
Tellers steal out of bank boxes while people pay there monthy fee for unclamed property.
Shouldn't have penny pinched on cybersecurity. This is the results
How do you know SkyNet hasn't already started to takeover? Satellites and self-driving electric cars would be one of the first targets for total AI domination.
I gotta say: I still do not care. Car dealerships are places of abuse and fraud. If they are having to work harder: good. I do not feel sorry for these entities. I only feel bad for how this kinda stuff tends to roll downhill. I feel sorry for the people who might be fired, in the process.
No one cares what you care about Phil
