- In Episode 10 of the Low Buck Diesel Truck I take some steel lying around my shop and bend it into some jeep rock sliders! These are very easy to make, anyone can do it! Follow along as I use my bender, dimple die and welder to make these 2 rock sliders for my truck!

I'm glad you're pushing for people to start welding and fabricating. Now that there are inexpensive welders in the market, there's no excuse not to. Metal is cheap and you can learn fast. Better than paying hundreds of dollars for an aftermarket piece.

A little over a year ago I took the plunge and looked on one of those FaceBook Market Place pages and found a guy selling a "new in the box" Cornwell Tools welder for $425. I looked it up and the darn thing normally sells for almost $900 so I rushed right over to have a look at it and sure enough. It was still sealed in the box and never been used. So I offered him $400 cash and I walked away with a great machine. I then watched every MIG welding video n YT and then went out the garage and melted metal to metal practicing on silly things and small bits of scrap steel before I bought real stuff to hang on the Jeep.
Since then I have built and added so much cool stuff to my XJ. Front and rear bumpers, mid-frame stiffeners, rock sliders, rear tire carrier and the latest is a roof rack system.
I love to fabricate stuff. I could use a few more cool tools like a bender and I would love to have a plasma cutter, but I'm getting by with the stuff I've got and only having so much garage space, its getting a bit tight in there.
Yesterday my son and I took our XJ out for a bit of mountain fun. We went shooting to test out his new M&P9 and the target holder system I welded up for him. I found a 10'x10'x1" plate at the metal surplus yard that would be a perfect target. And then we took the XJ up a trail that he wanted to explore. It was a nice challenge as it was fairly rocky and snow covered in spots. we climbed up to about 8500ft elevation and then decided that because we were alone and had no winch (still need to get that too) and it was getting late in the day, that we should probably turn around before we get ourselves into trouble as the trail was getting steeper, more rocky and deeper snow.

It's called a compound miter.. good work on the build. Impressive tool list you have. Jealous of your garage space. I've build roof racks and sliders and all kinds of other projects with the cheapest harbor freight welder , bender,.. a grinder and a few magnets and sets of clamps. I had a drill press also but never had a dimple die..
Looks great! I like the idea of welding that plate from the backside only, nice clean look. Gets me excited about building the sliders for my full size Cherokee! Planning on cutting out the rockers on my though to tuck them up higher, but we likely have different goals for our FSJs

Another great video. Sliders came out great. I have made a bunch of sets for my Jeeps in the past. Time in the shop is where all my worries disappear for awhile and projects like this are just a lot of fun. By the way. My JD2 model 32 is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made!

Nate Bleepinjeep hey, check out the Trajan Q700 / Q1400 carbide saw. I have a the Q1400 and it was worth every penny. I see a lot of cuts you’re making with the cut off disk that this would make quick work of and it leaves a real nice square edge and the metal stays cool. I never expected it to work as well as it does. Fab On!

Really like those sliders! I'm older and my truck sit a bit higher so I was leaning towards those flip style sliders Metal Cloak has for the Jl/JK. I figured it would help my wife & I getting in, also allow the granddaughter to climb in by herself. I popped for a low buck mig to get the basic of welding and found my youngest (at the time ) had the talent. I went out again a bought a low buck plasma cutter and watched all my sheet metal get cut up in the boys projects. Your right about jumping in and keeping cost low. We run our equip off of our big genny so Mom doesn't get a $$ surprise. LOL

I decided i wanted to get into fab work in order to do stuff like this. I work at a structural steel fabrication shop and its basically this on steroids! When 1/4 inch plate looks like sheet metal lol. Another great video Nate!

Nice setup, but I myself, to keep my side panels vertically straight and not wavy, place a tube farther out than the flare. Think of a ramp to allow the stump. rock face, tree to slide along then get into the tire sort of thing.
As for the dimples, great to place under body/floor lights for that road glitter....or rock lights.

I wouldn't want to clean the mud, sand, salt, etc. out of those with that plate on the bottom, but nice work Nate in a short amount of time...they do look good!
I though that as well, love the look but some half circles at the base of the plate would allow debris to wash out.
You don't need a helper...you need some magnets! ;-)
Lol yes I do. The magnets I have aren't very strong. I would use magnets alot more if I had some that weren't from harbor freight
This is the best project on the channel. Great job! Any particular reason you left the 2x2 the length you did? I thought from the beginning that it would look nice just a little longer with a taper at the front and rear corners. Regardless they came out great!
How about cutting half way through the plate then bend it and go over it with a bead of weld.? Anyway looks good
I built some bolt on rails for my JK, would have loved to use a dimple die for mine!
A dimple die is a great to to have in your arsenal! They aren't very expensive and well worth the investment
The old man step will probably help getting to the roof rack if you ever add one..

My only question is have you thought about the articulation of the frame when you're wheeling? I've seen some trucks flex when going over obstacles the bed moves separate from the cab.

Anyone can build these. After they get a bender, press, welder, and dimple dies.
If you can do without the dimples you can just buy pre bent tubing from roll cage kits and weld together.
You might be surprised what you can build without all of the expensive tools.
I build without all those tools (except the welder) all the time. Not to say I wouldn’t use a bender if I had one. I was just commenting on the title of this video. Not just anyone can build these. Anyone with all these tools can.
@@SWBCrawler If your going to go down that path then your also saying that he was derogatory against blind people or handicapped people. What he meant was you don't have to be a fabricator to build these, buy a few harbor freight tools and you can start fabbing up bumpers and sliders and what not. He wasn't literally saying any human being on planet earth can build rock sliders.
yep, just like anybody can go to space....if they own a rocket...bottomless pockets etc
Nice design. Maybe an inch farther away from the lower rocker so debris doesn't get caught between the rail the and the body. Front bumper looks great.
Tradeoffs.
It is relative.. larger gap can also mean larger debris.

Liked the sliders a lot. Something I noticed is that you welded the flat bar on the bottom of the tube, I guess I was expecting it to be on the top like in a step. So, with the extremes bent up and the dimples protruding up, isn't it goint to retain watter, mud, snow? No place to drain is what I am thinking, I guess. Love the built, cheers from Brazil.
There is a small gap between the plate and the tube that water and what not can drain through. But yes some rocks and stuff will get caught in there. Thanks for watching!

These came out great man! Wish I had the space to work like this. Have all these tools besides a brake and a pipe bender! I want to do this to my toyota pickup
Jursaw my shop doesn’t have a brake either. What we do is we cut the strip to length and cut a slot where the bend is going to be leaving about a inch from the end of the cut to the end of the metal. That way you can basically bend it with your hands. It makes it way easy to get the bend exact. Then we run a bead over the slot we cut to hold the angle. Another tip would be using crescent wrench’s to grab on the Metal for more leverage when bending it

You didn't say how you sorted out drilling the upper holes, could you have swapped them to the inside of the frame? J10 looking good. Don't see any here anymore (salt Ohio).

If your Northern Tools welders is the Klutch line do a review of it, please, I've been kicking around the idea of buying one, I want your opinion of it.
Look really nice but seem that it's gonna be a perfect spot to catch mud and dirt....

I hace a question, I live in Mexico and here you cannot get tube (cromoly tube) if I use exhaust pipe the bender can do the job?? I bought the bender without knowing the difference between pipe and tube and without knowing that here you cannot find tube 😢. Regard’s!!
Great video. A few questions so I can do the same. 1) What was the thickness of the tubing - 1/8"? How did you attach your 4x4 plates to the frame? We saw you drill holes. Did you go all the way through both sides of the frame and bolt the base plates to the frame? Di you use rivnuts in the holes you drilled on the outside of the frame? Or, something else? Thanks

Not that it matters but I’m more of a stick welder probably more expensive idk but mig welding is great as well
Seeing that you didn't paint the bumper or the headache rack I think what you should do is let the raw metal rust a little bit and then clear coat it to match the persona of the truck and the same with when you do the rear bumper
I like this idea and I have considered it. I'm not sure what my plan is for paint yet. I keep going back and forth
