I don't comment much but just wanted to take the time to say thanks so much for making videos. Hands down my favorite off-road channel. People seem to correct and complain alot here but the mistakes you make are part of why the channel rocks. It isn't a channel claiming to preach the gospel, just the best you can do at the time which is what we're all doing out here! You're great to watch and insanely good and the filming and editing part as well. Better than some ACTUAL off-road shows out there even :) Keep doin what your doin.
I was so turned off on this bumper when it had the tail light parts hanging over but the addition of the triangle flares (done with magic at 17:25:20 - 17:25:21) made all the difference. Those turned out awesome and I want to start welding and then make one just like it for my ZJ.
That bumper you made came out awesome. I've been looking for steel bumpers for my wifes 2006Jeep Grand Cherokee but can't find anything. Guess I'm going to buy some more tools. LOL
Hey man, thank you for making these videos. I am not just a cheap jeep fan , I am a cheap jeep collector. I've had three different grands and three different regular cherokee's and although they have all got plenty of frustrating little traits that can aggravate even the most patient man, their positives ( so far) have consistently overwhelme the negatives in my collection. Like a lot of us, that have children, rent, or even worse house payments ( and the unexpected little emergency repairs that go along with it), car or truck payments, and on and on, for a ton of us, there is nothing left. So if we want ANYTHING we either have to build it ourselves, or just watch others have fun. My problem with my jeeps has been my fear of unibody's, and not having the modern welding equipment that makes life easier when working with them. I have sat down countless times behind the hatch and in front of the hood with some really cool sound ideas that would have been unique, functional, and stout, but every time I get close, I second guess myself, lose confidence, and begin to doubt myself, ESPECIALLY when it comes down to mounting stronger ( heavier) armour to a vehicle made mostly out of a low quality Tin foil. The Last Time I sat staring at my back side, I considered incorporating the same system that you did with yours but again, I pussed out fearing that if I did crunch into something or pulled with it a tiny bit to hard ( not that that could possibly happen) it would basically disintegrate into a perfect Murphy's law exhibit. You have gave me hope where before I had little if any! By God now I am going to finally scab it on there birdshit welds and all haha
that's the best looking bumper I've ever seen for a ZJ... all the expensive aftermarket bumpers I've seen aren't nearly as nice as this one... by the end of the video I was gonna ask if you could build me one, then you made it clear why you wouldn't lol... keep up the great work and I'm still loving the cheap Jeep project
i dunno i'd put the rockhard above this one because of how well it blends with the body but this one does look better than quite a few of the bumpers you can buy
How much would it cost to repair a bumper on a jeep grand Cherokee mountain edition or someshit is has little cracks and someone wants me to buy it idk if I should becuse I feel like the bumper replacement will cost like 500$$$ and I cant even find the damn bumper for it
I've just come across your channel by chance and saw this video. I gotta say I'm a subscriber! With the great content which you make entertaining and interesting. You also have a calming voice that sounds like you have zero stress. All in all I'm impressed with the video and will be watching more! Thanks for the great content and sharing.
Now that is a real bumper and all you need now is the skid plate under that very vulnerable fuel tank. My Suzuki Sport has the thin skid plate as a standard part , thin being the bad part of the skid plate. great video with good music that is not drowning out conversation as so many others do.
I would like to build a gas tank with a heavy duty skid plate to protect rear-end explosions Jeeps Biggest problem. Your bumper it a step in the right direction! Thank you. This could help save lives.
dude you rock! my buddy from work told me about your channel. I have a 98 grand cherokee and want to restore it for cheap hopefully. I am nowhere near as talented as you though. Great work and you gotta subscriber!
i really like that you give a time estimate for the project featured in the video ! i never keep track of my hours and sometimes wish i did, but i might be better off not knowing how many thousands of hours i sent working on a $700 xj
just advice for the next guy lock two bolt together, for the rear bumper studs to come out. it'll take some patience, but it can be done. And then soak them in oil, and use a wire brush to remove the crud and then resoak them and good as new haha
I've got a buddy who has an international scout and all he does is take a railroad tie and drill the right holes to mount it. Just replace it if it gets smashed
@@aidanmakinster922 Where are you from? Here in Europe i almost never see wooden ties, almost exclusively metal or concrete ones, hence my comment. The metal ones are also shaped almost like a bumper so there's that.
Those plastic tanks are FAR tougher then steel ones, you'd have to hit it pretty hard. It also sit's higher and is somewhat protected by the rear axle.
It is also nice to extend the bumper out 4 inches from the vehicle, plate the top, and then you create a nice step to stand on to get to the roof rack.
wow matt, you really went out of your way with this video, this is what we like to see, long and in depth detailed video . keep up the good work, I would also like to purchase some of your shirts.
Interesting DIY project but a not cheap bumper. The time and labor involved in this project are extraordinary and require expensive tools and skills, the cost of the materials is secondary and incidental. Great video and I love being a witness to it. thanks for sharing the creative process involved. it is a kind of adventure.
thanx for selling such a high quality bumper for a hundred bux - my order was processed fast and shipped the next day - best hundred i've spent so far on my jeep lol
Its always amazing what a man can accomplish, when he puts his mind to something. Good job. I think I might sub. I love all these cheap jeep series. I need a plasma too. I just got a welder, never welded in my life. Thanks for the hard work.
Turned out Great! Ive been wanting to do this for my old toyota but not sure Ill be able to without a plasma cutter. The cuts for the Tow receiver & Tow hooks will be a pain with angle grinder lol :) Thanks for sharing! Enjoyed the Video work/editing/music :)
The bumper looks good I agree. You made it to where you can put a hitch in and tow with it and also hook up chains to pull someone out of need be but, if your towing a trailer it better have some long safety chains owf not then you have no way to hook up the safety chains coming off the trailer itself
I recommend that you leave a small distance between your bumper and the body of the jeep, since in the distance that is now, if you hit something the bumper will completely deform the jeep back
Nicely done. I'm not a fan of the jagged cut along the bottom of the sides, but to each their own. Looks super solid. Wish I still had access to a shop.
This isn't intended to be the internet safety police or anything.. promise... Just a word of caution. We bought a craigslist 5.9 ZJ project over the summer with the classic broomstick rear hatch prop rod. The shocks on the rear hatch were obviously blown out and then some.. While working on the jeep in the middle of the afternoon, home alone by himself my buddy knocked the prop rod out by mistake and the hatch hit him in the back of the head. Knocked him out cold while splitting his head open something bad. He woke a few minutes later in a huge pool of his own blood. If he didn't live 2 minutes from work to get a coworker to rush him to the ER, he might not have made it. Be super super careful with those rear hatches. They weigh a ton and can really fuck your world up!
straight up I've had that problem on several jeeps and made a point to repair them every single time my buddy used the broomstick prop rod knocked it free and almost killed his cat when the hatch slammed shut that ain't no joke they're dangerous, also you should watch out for heavy unsecured items in the back of your Jeep when your Wheeling, because when you roll it over rock crawling, which you will, everything in your Jeep not bolted down becomes a missile
Mine needs replaced too but I found the best way is to tightly clamp vice grips onto the shock so that it can’t come back down but I do strongly suggest getting them replaced just to be sure!
I thought it was going to look ugly but WOW it turned out to look amazing. really good job
Same! As soon as he did the angle piece by the tail light, because of the tail light, I was like nope nope nope. Then I was wrong lol
southseapirate1 me to lol

Hey Matt, Thanks for not giving up on rusty Jeeps. Those of us around the Great Lakes truly appreciate it!
That bumper you made came out awesome. I've been looking for steel bumpers for my wifes 2006Jeep Grand Cherokee but can't find anything. Guess I'm going to buy some more tools. LOL
N tell your wife did it all for HER
I say cut 4" holes in the blocks under the lights and weld on some tabs for reverse/work/or dust lights
I thought it would look really ugly at first, but surprisingly, with the black paint it has a really low profile look to it. Good job!
+Vaktrus thanks!
1:20 lmao me every time I work on a car because I live in the north and everything has rust
These videos have made me appreciate people with built ZJs even more now. These make XJs look so simple

you need some armor for that gas tank hanging off the back... I could see hitting that sucked out on the trail
zach wright technically it does, thats a plastic skid plate under the steel tank. i know not much but its something

So fun doing the hitch recall at the dealership... those studs never come out up here in Minnesota. Just did one today.
Great Job Matt. the rear bumper came out great. Catching up on Project Cheap Jeep. Awesome work brother.

now for a swing out tire carrier
that was my first thought. could those mounts support a tire carrier...
his welds look stronger than the metal id say go for it
its not really about the welds, its about the way it is mounted to the unibody.
