    As beach season hits high gear this holiday weekend, some people in North Carolina are calling for beach closures amid a surge in shark attacks over the past month.
    There have been 11 shark attacks off the shores of the Carolinas this year, most in just the last three weeks.
    On Wednesday, a 68-year-old man was bitten by a shark off the coast of Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. The victim, identified by the hospital as Andrew Costello, was bitten on his left side in his lower leg and hip and on both his hands, Hyde County EMS Director Justin Gibbs told ABC News.

    Don't kill them! Tag them, then we can learn more about their migratory patterns and more about why they are there, and then we will have a better idea of when it's safer to swim.

    a week and a half ago i was in Avon, North Carolna where another shark attack was

  • @ArigatoGrande
    @ArigatoGrande 9 лет назад +22

    What's with all the victim blaming and saying shit like, oh these people deserved it because they're stupid, or look how many sharks we kill a year, or it's not an attack it's just nature, or it's shark land we have no right to be in there.
    1) These people are not stupid, they're enjoying beautiful parts of nature that they were lucky enough to have access to. With everything there's a risk; leaving your house, you have a risk of tripping and breaking a bone, driving has a risk of crashing and dying, staying at home and doing nothing has a risk of health issues and mental issues. These people are not stupid for just going to the beach; people are more likely to get attacked by a cow than by a shark.
    2) How many sharks that are killed for their parts are not even remotely relevant to people getting attacked :P
    Death is death, yeah, but this has nothing to do with anything; it's like saying, well Caren's dog big Jimmy oh no, and then Stacey's like WELL LOOK HOW MANY DOGS ARE IN SHELTERS, KILLED, ABANDONED, ETC. And Jimmy and Caren would be like, Stacey where'd you come from and why are you here.
    3) It is an attack. Yes, they are creatures of nature, as we are, but they attack their food as they attack anything they want to. It's not an attack of malice, hate, or anything other than just curiosity and hunger, but it is an attack nonetheless.
    4) Sharks are living creatures that exist in the water. But we as humans are also living creatures that happen to live everywhere and are able to adapt to different environments, just like many many other types of animals. Birds fly, but the sky is not exactly their home, nor is it all theirs and no other creature has a right to be in it. My point is that, as humans, we are creatures too, therefore we have the same kind of entitlement to enjoying, exploring, and adapting to any other parts of nature we find suitable and enjoyable. We're not destroying the ocean by swimming in it, we're being a part of nature.

    • @katiemay7296
      @katiemay7296 9 лет назад

      ***** For point number 1, no one is arguing with you. You can take every precaution ever and still have a shark encounter. It'd be like entering the jungle and not expecting a lion encounter. The ocean is NOT our home. We don't understand its rules (why some sharks attack and others don't.)
      Number 2: Um....I don't understand it. Seems to me you're rambling.
      Number 3: Is it an attack? Sharks can't identify us by human means (they aren't human), the best way they have to identify anything is by biting. Unfortunately for us, that exploratory bite leads to death.
      Number 4: We absolutely have a reason to enjoy the ocean. We can't forget the ocean isn't our natural habitat. We don't understand the ocean's ecosystem at all (a fundamental understanding doesn't count) so when we cross boundaries we can't blame ourselves and we can't blame the animals.

    • @ArigatoGrande
      @ArigatoGrande 9 лет назад

      For #2, what I was addressing was the number of comments that bring up shark death statistics and compare them to how many sharks kill humans. My point there was that bringing those facts in are completely irrelevant.
      And for #3, I understand that sharks do tend to identify things by biting them, but when they rip off limbs and thrash in the water, it does seem more of an attack, it might not have been to kill, but to severely injure a creature with the intent to do so is definitely an attack.

      The surf is always better due to the contour of the bottom. During Summer 2015, while people were letting their kids swim freely, anyone that understood the current conditions were staying out of the water, especially with the population of Bull and Tiger sharks local to this area.

      When are you going, and where at? It's "mostly" safe. I've been at the beach like all week in the mornings or evenings mostly, but on Friday evening my lower leg/foot area hit against something in the water while I was swimming. I was in about 5' ish ft. of water. Some people have been attacked in much lower water than that though. I'm afraid to go back in after that. I want to, but it's really hard to see anything that's in the water. I'm just trying to give some perspective. Most anyone I have ever heard, who spoke about their being attacked by a shark, have always said that "it is not the sharks fault. And, I have no ill will for them". But, you have this mass hysteria in the Carolinas. Hey, go swim somewhere else. It is their ocean, not ours.

    What the flying fudge- and you know I wanted to say another word, Its their home and humans our the trespassers. If you are worried about an attack swim in a pool. Dont blame our fish life. Dang!

    I feel sorry for the sharks. They're being decimated by humans: while every year sharks kill no more than 10 persons worldwide, one of the most comprehensive studies ever compiled on illegal shark killing estimates that *100 million sharks are killed by humans, every year, around the world*. This number by far exceeds what many shark populations need to recover. :\

      Mr_Ordinary101 YT well, like some evil humans, sharks will kill, they are very vicious animals, of course they do it to survive and eat but they will attack if a person or another sea creature gets close enough. I’m not saying there not cool looking animals they are but for me I’d like to stay away from the vicious animals and humans in the world.

    Shoot them??? that's really stupid that's like someone walking into your house and then being able to shoot you instead of you shooting them you're in their territory you're in their water, their home you are food to them if you don't want to be eaten don't swim in the water go to a pool or swim at your own risk.

    The only solution is to stay on the sand and let the water splash at you. Good enough for me. If it gets me too wet I scream and run away.

    Always be careful going in the sea.
    Surfers will always have trouble with regards to being mistaken.
    As for Bull sharks. They will attack anything and also swim in fresh water.
    Never go swimming during twliight hours in the sea.

    It is really unfortunate for the kids involved. Don't believe it's worth a shark killing spree. I don't see how you can hold a predator liable for hunting in its natural habitat.

    Its really no big deal, there isnt any such thing as a safe place in this world. Every day you wake up you face a world full of things that can hurt or kill you. The ocean is a beautiful place but its just as dangerous as a high way durring rush hour.

    As a republican, 2nd amendment activist, and A PATRIOT I always carry a gun when I go swimming just in case a liberal commie shark tries to eat me for his dinner. I recommend you all start carrying firearms while you swim. You can never be too safe.
