  • So following yesterday's posting of this film, generous Martin Arias kindly sent me a scan of his Spanish copy - which is actually slightly better quality than my main Italian source print. It has a tiny bit of extra footage at the end BUT it has a big chunk of additional footage near the middle, where Larry, Fred DeSilva, Spencer Bell (and Bill Hauber I think?) play a game of craps (dice). I imagine they cut it out of the other versions 'cos it's a bit crap! Anyway, THIS version DOESN'T have me babbling all over it, with the examples of different takes. It's just Larry, Ollie and Co at their slapstick finest. Enjoy!
(Version 1 includes examples of the different scenes extant in the USA and European versions - and can be found here: • THE GOWNSHOP (1923) - ... )

THE GOWNSHOP was excerpted heavily in Warner Bros' 1949 compilation short JUST FOR FUN. In fact, they actually reversed the second and first reels, putting the chase ahead of the gags in the first reel.

Hi Ray... Yes you're correct. In fact I used some of that footage in this reconstruction. (By the way, it IS Monty Banks (with Sid Smith) and not Tyler Brooke in JUST FOR LAUGHS. We have a still from that short, but so far haven't pinned down the title. I posted the clip here ruclips.net/video/wiZzdnkUQZA/видео.html

Larry Semon seems to be largely forgotten today and receives little love from silent cinema buffs. But in his day he was far more popular than Chaplin, Keaton or Lloyd. Unfortunately he made some bad financial decisions and his career was over by the late 1920's due to severe over-spending on his productions and became heavily in debt and died in 1928 before the end of the silent era.

I don't know about "far more popular".
