  • 50 years of RedBud MX. April 28, 1974, the first ever Pro Motocross held at RedBud Track n' Trail, about one year after the facility opened.
Shot on Super 8 by Dan Williams, not long after he returned from Vietnam, this footage sat in a box for decades, undigitized, until his son Matt got it transferred. Matt said his father didn't actually watch the footage until 45 years after he shot it.
The man trying to avoid the camera is Dan. He's wearing a Bultaco jacket, which Matt still has (and wears) today.
Can you ID any of the riders?
Mike Hartwig swept the motos in the 500cc class. That's Mike in yellow (#79) riding a Yamaha. It was the 3rd of his 3 career AMA Pro MX wins.
Kenny Zahrt won the 250cc class, all with a 1-1 performance. It was the only AMA Pro MX win of his career. No joke, on April 1, Zahrt showed up to the Hangtown Classic and finished 37th overall.
🎥 Dan Williams. Thank you to @mukasayzee for sharing this family treasure!

It's amazing how much it hasn't changed in some ways! You can clearly see that the LaRocco's Leap section was a downhill back then!

That first shot gave me the chills when I realized what it was. its standing beside the current flag pole looking at the leap.

I went to a few national events back in the day as a kid and had one of those Bultaco Pursangs. What a fun bike to ride.
Really enjoyed this video. Brought back great memories of going to the races and riding with my Dad

@@WeWentFast I make Atlanta sometimes. Only one close to me.
I wish they still ran the moto GP inside the infield at Road Atlanta.
The coolest track I've ever been too.

Fun watch. After a National event, we’d steal the banner flags and try to get them autographed. I never had the luck.

I remember the big crack down on banner stealing about 22 years ago. It got to the point where people were doing it while the riders were on the final lap of the race and almost hitting spectators.

@@WeWentFast Yes, I remember that. Saw it happen at Unadilla. We were scaredy cat thieves. Waiting until most everything was packed up for the day.

@@WeWentFast We are grandfathered into our tarckside spot at the top of the triple step-up. After the races are over the track workers take the banners down and give us (that are still lingering until traffic dissipates) the cheaper ones! Scored a huge roll of Monster banners this year!

I started going there (and racing a bit there) in 1985, and I would always bring a camera to the national Event. I like to look through them once in a while, the riders, the bikes, the crowd, the track. Butt, have you ever noticed that when you took a pic of a cute gals Butt, it never looks quite as good on film?
    Just an observation. :)

@@WeWentFast I think the "Reeeeeeed Buuuuuddd!" chant started in 1985. The hillside was much more civil back then, people camping and trying to get some sleep the night before the race. One guy, with a super deep and loud voice, (like a 4-stroke), who sounded like he was 400lbs, would chant the drawn out words, and others in the area would answer to him, but nothing like the deep baritone originator. Of course, that was my first year there, so maybe people were doing it before 1985. But that night, it sure sounded like that one man,----------------started it all. :)

The days when the average Joe. Could buy a bike pay your fee a race. Not anymore.

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA 9 месяцев назад

Or any kid could buy a new bike with a part time job. It was like the Muscle car days, where a kid coming home from Vietnam would buy a new Muscle car from the Military $3000.00 severance pay check. Then, outside interference in the industry (1986 production rule and the EPA forced 4-stroke engine for MX bikes), government regulations, put and end to that great era. When I talk about our right to freedoms, everybody seems to think government has a right to take them away.
