Ep. #31: Jeff Ward is Captain America
Earlier this year, for over two hours, I sat at Jeff Ward’s dining room table and listened as he told stories of an era more than three decades behind him; his time as a member of Team USA with the Trophee and Motocross of Nations between 1983 and 1990.
They were mostly stories of winning, but also the suffering, soldiering and salvaging he went through to get those wins.
As he autographed the artwork designed in his honor (available now at shop.wewentfast.com (shop.wewentfast.com) ), the normally quiet Ward spared no details: the passes, the crashes, bad starts, border crossings, travel nightmares, sabotage and peeing in a bag for Ron Lechien (true story).

Ep. #29 James Stewart: The Fastest Man on the Planet Finds Perfection
Просмотров 544 месяца назад
Between 2005 and 2016, James Stewart completed just one full season of Pro Motocross in the 450 class: 2008. And in the days, weeks and months leading into that summer, he was dubious of being able to go the distance. His first three years in the class were disasters: it started with an uncompetitive bike and ended with a knee injury. In between, there was Ricky Carmichael, who refused to be be...

The best way to win a 450SX main event in 2024 (or even a single Triple Crown gate drop) is to cross that white line in no worse than third place. Surely, we’ve had a few too many cocktails with Captain Obvious but we’re here to share the data that some people think doesn’t exist. And don’t me Shirley. Too many "S's".......hence, the prolongation....
Stewart was clearly trying to come from that outside like he did and then cut inside with more momentum he would have passed Carmichael
AMERICANS GREATEST MXON RIDER AND I'M A HONDA RIDER FOR NEARLY 50YEARS SO FOR ME TO GO AGAINST MAGOO, BAILEY,JOHNSON, OMARA AND AFEW OTHERS IT'S PAINFUL BUT HE DESERVES IT IN MY EYES.
🐝🏁 👍Jeff Ward
🐝🏁 Jeff Ward a legend in motocross 👍👍👍👍
Oh I sure loved the sound of their late 70s bike. It was clean
🔥👊✌️
Stewart had the fast line/launch. For pure speed nobody could touch him.
He was just going from that outside like he did and he was going to cut inside with more momentum and past Carmichael
Wardy is the MAN !
Dig it ⚡️🏁
Thank you!
Cool cool cool, I was there, raced every Red Bud from 1974 to 1978 and attended every AMA pro race held at the track and camped over night. WOW. Thanks... Gotta love District 14 and even have a Red Bud District 14 qualifier patch from a hat to go to amateur Nationals from Red Bud.
Great looking back and seeing my mate Leisky put in a great ride. Thanks.
Rick Johnson was a beast! Honda Red ruled in the late 80's . &David Bailey, Johnny O'Mara
I’ve been looking for this race for the last 10 years! I watched it on vhs along with other Rick Johnson races like the David Bailey vs Rick Johnson “you can’t touch him with a 20 foot poll” race. I wish someone would post that entire vhs because it was my childhood, I watched it everyday before school back in the early 1990’s.
Ooops
A high-speed step-down curve will do that.
Senseless
Why is that senseless he was going from the far outside just like he did he was going to cut inside with more momentum which he would have passed Carmichael.
@ He has always raced with out thinking ak
75 LA Colliseum was just a hell of a televised event. So many of the sport's stars were in that event, and they were in their prime. The sport really reached a peak on that night.
ricky should have checked on stewart
What dumb dumb ? He should forfeit even more possible positions during a race for a championship to check the welfare of the dude who jumped on his back and cost him the win just after making a clean pass ?
There was plenty of people to help him I feel the same way If there have been nobody to help him and they were on a backtrack I'm sure he would have
But at this point he's upset he just got jumped on and doesn't understand why. Stewart came from the far outside just like he did to cut inside and pass Carmichael Carmichael stayed tight to the inside
rubbing is racing?
Unfortunately, JS F*** up
I think cooper always rode best on honda
God bless you 🙏 Ricky
Can't get enough of this... Jeff was on mean green and Rick was on the red rocket! I remember watching this as a teenager. The real deal Champions of 2 strokes...
RIP Jeremy McGrath, wow....what a way to go out. Say hi to OJ Simpson for me.
I remember watching this race as a 21 yr old, seems like yesterday. I miss the days when we knew almost every rider on the track. Magoo Chandler was my absolute favorite what a wild man he was. 🐾✌️🇺🇸
RJ !!! 🙌
Rick Johnson #1 The BEST. My hero . From Maurício Papaléo #3- Rio de Janeiro- Brasil
That track layout sucks big time
Rode it in 1976, had already changed a bit, thanks!
Dude, thank you! I've been trying to find this race forever. I remember watching this as a kid. I was at the 1986 USGP and I will never forget how Rick Johnson beat the world.
Happy to help, Brian! Tell your friends about We Went Fast and support us at shop.wewentfast.com!
RIP Larry Huffman
Love Guy Cooper, he is a great rider during this era of supercross.
Cooper is riding like Charles Manson !
This is why rj was my favorite rider.
The comments about the hay and straw bails was classic Art and Bailey
I remember going to Indian Dunes in 84 and 85 with my new 84 RM125, and at that time the Shadow Glen track had added a very gnarly triple jump that sadly had paralyzed a few guys. I had also been involved in another tragedy at the trails section there, when a neighborhood acquaintance of mine drove my 82 TT 250 off of a 250' cliff, which unfortunately and savagely took his life, and left a widow and two kids behind.
The greatest announcer of all time.
What a legend!!
Wardy in the open face is wild!!!
I still laugh about what Bob said once about why he retired: "I got tired of twistin' up my knees and landin' on my head," he said.
LET BROCK BYE I remember Motocross Action writers back in the day laughing about the pit board sigh -- "Three words...two misspellings" they said!
I always enjoy the statistics and glad you’re good with them. If I was in charge of them we’d be skewed! Ba Dum Tss
Hey, Mike! Thanks for the kind words! Love your avatar icon there!
Applause sound effect. Larry Huffman can make paint drying sound exciting. lol
David Bailey and Art Eckman in the booth….perfect! McGrath was just magic; win or lose.
Have the book thanks to We Went Fast. Read every word. The narration is even better. Allows the mind to vision the past easier. Hope you continue this.
Oh this stirred up memories! Watching Hannah in ‘78 at Pittsburgh. I think I just smelled beer and 2-stroke smoke.
The “Lil Professor” will always be 100%LEGENDARY
Dat lil 80 jus rippin! I just bought my son a 99 CR80, i can believe how fast that thing is
Fun to watch. More please
