It's more than that, Disney is already filled with toxic parent tropes. This movie evolves on that concept by referencing a phenomena that's very common at least in Asian American households, that cultural divide between home life and school life. I'm not sure if David Chang the chef was the first to come up with it, but he talked about that 'Korean at home, English at school' kinda life as a kid. Before those two worlds started colliding, Mei very much was happy with that status quo. In the end with the world's merging there is still some conflict there but it's dealt with healthily between Mei and her mother. Her mom also opens up by inviting her friends to dinner, food, the ultimately means of wish to share culture
i really want them to focus on black generational trauma next or maybe middle eastern next. and then black. But omg the tears I’d sob actually seeing it someone who looks like me and has experienced some of what i have. I’d- ugh. Or a movie about kids who have experienced abuse bc i did and trying to understand it isn’t their fault or trying to show it isn’t ok and to speak up and to stand their ground the best they can. I’d sob so hard.
I thought she liked fantasy or making him into a different appearance. This makes so much sense especially when during puberty there can be girls who aren’t into those hardcore learning about the opposite sex
I really appreciate how accurate that is to the developmental level of girls that age. Physical attraction there, high emotions. But the sexual part is really vague and innocent.
I'll never understand all the people who bashed the movie because "they couldn't relate to it." There are swathes of movies I can't fully relate to and I still love. Even though I can't fully relate to being an asian teen girl, I related so hard to the self-pressure Mei Mei put herself under. I cried at the end because it reminded me so much of my own relationship with my mother. Even if you can't relate to Turning Red whatsoever, not every movie is meant for every person and that's okay. It's not a good reason for people to bash it though :)
It's utterly ridiculous and I assume it's really just cloaked misogyny or something along those lines. I can't relate to being a billionaire who dresses like a f***ing bat and fights crime, but I'm still capable of enjoying those movies. And actually I found it quite easy to relate to this movie because I am also capable of empathy.
A very underrated aspect of Turning Red is its depiction of a healthy and supportive group of female friends considering just how much society teaches women to absolutely hate each other
It’s even funnier knowing that voice actress thought that the awooga line wouldn’t air and then when she was watching the movie at the premiere she got super embarrassed 😂
The dad is so precious. The talk he had with his daughter? Priceless. That’s a good dad. He didn’t talk a lot in the movie, but he made it COUNT. Also sorry not sorry, Priya is my favorite. She is exactly what I wanted to be at that age. XD (ok, it was actually Daria that I wanted to be, but… close enough) (I 100% like that she seemed to have something going with that goth girl at the party… :P )
I fell in love with this movie in a way I haven’t with a movie for a long time. It’s so sincere and earnest in its execution while being insanely stylized. Domee Shi really dug deep inside herself to tell such and honest human story that it hurts my soul man. Everyone wants to talk about “coming of age” like it’s a big deal but this movie reminded me how universal those ideas and themes are. I’m so glad we’re also starting to explore the generational cycle we get caught up in in a subtle and thoughtful way. It hurt me to hear people hated this movie because it was “too cringey”. THAT’S THE POINT! You’re gonna sit there and lie to me like your pre-teen and teenage years weren’t cringey? Great movie, so happy to see you react to it!
i love that disney is finally focusing on those type of things that were taboo once, things that just belong to growing up as a girl, like periods, and first crushes and the parents, because that's REAL and i love that
I like this fact too and thanks to this movie, kids will find normal to ask questions about it. Me, I had my periods at 12 but my mother already told me what it is because I found her protections in the toilets
You are the First person I've seen bring up Priya laying like she's a vampire in a coffin. Another one that always stands out to me is her saying "I banish you!" instead of "get lost".
My favorite 4*Town member is Taeyoung, but it's even harder for me to pick a favorite song. Hard to believe that Billie's brother Finneas got to voice Jesse in the film. And can we applaud Jin for being the voice of reason? He finally freed his daughter from her mom's shadow. She was finally able to shine on her own and be the first in her family in a long time to accept her panda form. Also, James Hong is always a win. I grew up with him voicing Daolon Wong in Jackie Chan Adventures and then Mr. Ping in the Kung Fu Panda films. (Not to mention he got to be Melinda May's father in the same SHIELD episode when they rescued Jemma.) I actually got to meet him once.
@@fictionaldarling You can barely hear him but yeah. If you go to their website, you'll find character bios for each member. Apparently Jesse's the oldest member and he's a father of two. It'd be funny if we get a short film with 4*Town, maybe even a mockumentary with a couple of new songs as well.
What I find most interesting about this movie is how even though it looks so hyper-focused on a particular demographic, everybody I know who’s seen it (none of whom have ANYTHING specifically related to the characters) has walked away from it feeling like it was speaking directly to them. I’m about as polar opposite from Mei as one could possibly get, and yet her experiences in dealing with her own self image and the heavy expectations put upon her by a loving yet over-bearing parent spoke to me deeply. Everybody seems to draw something very specific from it that relates to their own life experiences no matter who they are or where they are in their life’s journey. That’s the sign of a brilliantly written story.

i think we just need to take a moment to appreciate the animation style, because it's not like what disney usually tries, making everything look more realistic, but instead it was more animated how mei felt and you really SAW how she felt about things and it was just GREAT and then there is that random scene of the dad cooking which is like the most dramatic but also the best animation i have ever seen in my entire life
Mr Gao knew when he saw the panda flying overhead what had happened, because he had been the family shaman. Priya had already started her period. She had deodorant, pads, and a budding figure. Great movie. It was easy to relate to, and I'm a 68-year-old black man.
"Early 2000s -- did they have Ticketmaster scalpers back then?" Yes. Yes, they did. I'm Generation X, so I should know. I'm glad that you got to see it, but seeing it with your mom -- that would have made the reaction special. I hope she gets to see it with you.

This movie really encapsulated the early 2000's and I found myself in the shoes of Mei as well. I think the moment that sold me on the movie tho? The moment Mei saw Ming as a young girl. I related to all the things she said and even the body language was 100% so relatable. Even as a guy, Mei and Ming's story is so darn relatable. That was the best part of the movie and will stick with me. Great reaction Jess!
I expected this would be your kind of movie 🤣 It is sort of ridiculous, as a 40-something white(ish) dude, how much I relate to Mei Mei. I was also an "over-achieving dork-narc" whose parents were loving but with VERY HIGH expectations, with associated pressures (Nobel prize for me rather than UN secretary general, but, you know, close enough 🤪)
Awesome reaction, Jess. I am so happy to see your take on this movie. Wow, I know one was Walt Disney Animation and the other (this movie) was Pixar, but just the fact that Disney released two movies that tackled intergenerational trauma in their own ways with heartwarming conclusions to each only a few months apart amazes me in just the best way. It helps that I love both Encanto and Turning Red A LOT. :D (On a related note, both also made me think of comic characters due to the powers characters in both movies had) I love Mei and her friend group. Abby's chaos (she even speaks Korean when she's particularly agitated..though only in two scenes), Miriam's easygoing and nurturing energy, and Priya's low-energy (a perfect balance to Abby's high energy) vibe while also being into night creatures like werewolves and vampires are all things that endear them to me. I remember my first time watching this movie with my family. When that ending part came, I was the only one crying like a baby. I couldn't even hold my emotions because it was almost relatable to me. Pixar NEVER fails.
This is kind of off topic but when you mentioned Our flag means death in your Thor trailer reaction I finally decided to watch it and I LOVE IT and I hope you’ll be able to get to it because I know you’ll adore it
Isnt it funny how there is this MASSIVE and i mean absolutely -MASSIVE - wave of generational trauma films and how it's taking over the 'villain' role? The generation before us must have REALLY screwed things up.
@@ghost_curse loads of people said it looked terrible before the movie even came out, then when it came out people were like "OH MY GOD THIS PIXAR MOVIE IS TALKING ABOUT PERIODS, AHHH SHEILD MY CHRISTIAN EYES!"
Such a cute video, Jess! And what a beautiful movie. Just the perfect encapsulation of growing up. The embarrassment of everything your parents do. Your friends sticking through it all. Over Easter my nephew wanted to watch this, and my sister said no because it's a metaphor for a girl getting her period. I felt so bad for him. Like, so? It's about growing up. Everyone can get something out of it. Love that you loved it.
I don't think the 2002 setting is just for nostalgia's sake. I think it's because about now, people who were teenagers in 2002 are becoming parents of teenagers, and the deepest message of this movie is aimed at them. "You were Mei; don't be Ming."
Close! If I remember correctly, it was Ray Fisher who played Cyborg. Honestly, it might have been a better film if they’d cast Jordan Fisher in the role.
You are VIBE Finally FINALLY someone who actually understood everything mei and her friends where going through.. People are like why are they behaving like that BECAUSE THAT'S NORMAL? I love you so much I really REALLY LOVED THIS MOVIE
FINALLY, i've been waiting so long for your next video so i could recommend Heartstopper for your next reaction vids, seriously, one of the best LGBTQ+ shows out there, really hope you like it
I just realize, what if they have a son in the family? Would they have the gift? Since they never confirmed if it can happen to a Male somehow. Instead of a Female at some point in their Family lineage.
If they had a son, the red panda wouldn’t have passed down to him. The legend goes is that the female ancestor created the red panda to protect the family while the men go off to war. I think.
Mei’s mum was straight up torturing her, not only crushing her creativity but showing the whole class her pads? Mei didn’t do anything to deserve that stuff
Isn't it a common trope to call a group with a number in the name to announce one thing while being one more ? To hide your true forces ? I don't know when it began, but the 3 musketeers are the first iteration of this trope I can remember (they are four, Athos, Portos, Aramis, and Dartagnan).
Turing red is suuuuper cringe, and that can be off putting at first (that and the character design is a bit of a choice). But if you really think about it, this is a movie about a bunch of 13 year old Canadian beliebers growing up in the earthly 2000s, it’s supposed to be cringey. And once you realize that, the movie actually becomes really good imo.
love your reaction!!!!!! this movie is everything!!! and something out of the subject i’d love seeing you react to this new netflix’s show called heartstopper i feel like you would love it!!! it’s a graphic novel if you want to read it as well
This movie made me so happy. Just overall the recognition of generational trauma can hit close to home with basically everyone. But this movie especially ended with a happy ending instead of one where the kids and parents never speak to each other again which I personally think makes a huge difference
I think this movie is the closest one to the reality even if " Encanto " was a good metaphor too. I felt very nostalgic too because I grew up in the begining of the 2000 years (I'm born on 1993) and I had a tamagotchi when I was 12 years old except, I was more like Priya than Meilin in this time 🤭 As a woman, I'm very happy that this movie tackles the subject of puberty and menstruations because people don't talk enough of it. In my case, I had my first at 12 but my mother explained me of that few years before because I discovered her protection in the toilets
It's a shame that Disney refused to allow this a theatrical release. They were afraid to lose money, but they still get to rake in the profits from it's success.
What the director said she wanted to make clear is that a child can absolutely be loved and the apple of her mom's eye - and there can still be tension and disagreements. It is NEVER in question how much Ming loves her daughter.
That moment where the mom is talking to her Tamagotchi just got funnier when I imagined Sandra Oh recording her lines those lines in the recording booth and now I love her even more!
Your reaction was priceless and amazing as always. This is in my top five favorite animated movies ever. I think the last 30 minutes makes everybody emotional and happy at the same time. 😪😊
One of my favourite recent movies to come out mostly because I a bit of myself in Mei Mei especially with the drawings and hiding them away from my parents so they wouldn't judge me.
Yes finally you’ve reacted to one of my favorite Pixar movies 🙌, not only because I relate to it as a boy I know weird but that it kind of inspires me anyways great video love the outfit 🥰 and the hair hope you have a wonderful day and thank 🙏 your for reacting to one of most amazing movies out there I’m the world! 🥰
your gender and background really doesn't matter when it comes to this movie. pretty much everyone can relate to it at least in some way. I don't understand why so many people hate it for literally no reason
I prefer the family drama in Encanto. I was sad that Mirabel was rejected by her family; her mother and Louisa were the only ones who were nice with her; the others were jerks just because she had no power. That was horrible! I was happy that she found Bruno and her grandma appologise for all the awful things she said. Mei's '' problem '' is not that big. She can't go to a concert? It's not dramatic compare to being hated by every member of your family. Also, the house was destroyed and almost killed Mirabel. Mei was not in danger except at the end when her mother went to the concert. The animation is ok but the story wasn't interresting for me 😐Her friends were boring especially the girl who likes Twilight, the bully had no development. He laughed at Mei then she forgive him because he likes the same band as her, that was weird. Her aunts weren't funny and the climax was lame.
taking this opportunity to say that i very much recommend that you watch the new netflix show heartstopper - it's very wholesome, cute, and gay. it's also set in the uk, and based off a graphic novel by alice oseman. idk i feel like it's something you might enjoy :)
Hi Jess ! I love this movie and can’t wait to finish the video ! I sent an insta message too But I’d love to see you react to heartsopper it’s a queer love story and I’d love to see you watch it ! :)))
Oh my god! so excited for this! please please tell me you're gonna watch heartstopper, its a queer show, where the characters actually use effective communication (sometimes)
I was so interested in this movie because they used a BSB song for the trailers and then I was disappointed when their music was not in the movie, BUT it was so good that I was not actually mad at them. xD
I loved this movie, being a 30 year old black man I felt so seen, and those self talk scenes mei had were so triggering took me back to the time I got caught forging my mom signature, and I was so convinced I was a awful kid I ran away came back a few hours later when I realized I didn't know where to go.
I did not expect to enjoy this movie as much as I did. Not that I thought it would be bad, I just did not expect it to be as great as it was. And, hell, I even found something I could relate to. When the mom says to Mei Mei “you try so hard to please everyone and make everyone happy” or something like that, I legit teared up because that’s me. I wouldn’t consider it my favorite film ever, but definitely one I can rewatch when I want to have a fun time.
Great reaction. One minor detail, though… In Canada there is no middle school. Public school goes from kindergarten to grade 8 and high school goes from grade 9 to grade 12. Then it’s off to either college or university if one so desires.

Fun Fact: the creator revealed the reason why Mei Mei draws her crushes as mermaids is because she’s too innocent to imagine them below the hip.

Love this film, didn't deserve the hate it got
It got hate? Everyone I know who's watched it said it's great
@@ghost_curse loads of people said it looked terrible before the movie even came out, then when it came out people were like "OH MY GOD THIS PIXAR MOVIE IS TALKING ABOUT PERIODS, AHHH SHEILD MY CHRISTIAN EYES!"
Somehow this movie is predictable and completely not what I thought it'd be ,loved it 😂
Please do the show "Our Flag Means Death", it's so good! Love your content.
Disney really decided to make a 100 minute movie calling me out eh?
No resolution for me though, just emotional damage
Fun Fact: Robaire, the lead singer of 4Town, is voiced by Jordan Fisher, aka Cyborg from Zack Snyder's Justice League.
Close! If I remember correctly, it was Ray Fisher who played Cyborg. Honestly, it might have been a better film if they’d cast Jordan Fisher in the role.
Love how quirky and awkward the characters are. And fun to see a Disney movie take place in Canada.
You are VIBE
Finally FINALLY someone who actually understood everything mei and her friends where going through..
People are like why are they behaving like that BECAUSE THAT'S NORMAL?
I love you so much
I really REALLY LOVED THIS MOVIE
This movie is freaking AWESOME.
FINALLY, i've been waiting so long for your next video so i could recommend Heartstopper for your next reaction vids, seriously, one of the best LGBTQ+ shows out there, really hope you like it
ahhhhhh heartstopper, I binged it yestetday!
I just realize, what if they have a son in the family?
Would they have the gift?
Since they never confirmed if it can happen to a Male somehow. Instead of a Female at some point in their Family lineage.
I've never thought of that but now I wish that was mentioned at some point in the film
If they had a son, the red panda wouldn’t have passed down to him. The legend goes is that the female ancestor created the red panda to protect the family while the men go off to war. I think.
I loved this movie. I was in 8th grade in 2001 and 2002 as well, so it was cool to see a story built around kids that age at that time.
I mean, if you hit a falsetto that high, it's mandatory tears be shed
Mei’s mum was straight up torturing her, not only crushing her creativity but showing the whole class her pads? Mei didn’t do anything to deserve that stuff
Yeah, the mom in the bamboo forest is where I always tear up, too.
It's so hilarious!! Abby, Priya and Miriam are my favourite characters.
After I watched this movie, my dad has never let me or my brothers watch it again, he thinks it’s weird
Oh man loved this movie and found myself crying during this reaction too haha!
A great movie, once again continuing the trend of movies exploring generational trauma. I could relate to the Dad although out of everyone lol
It’s cool to see how other people react to movies. I thought the movie was really cute.
I think this movie is the closest one to the reality even if " Encanto " was a good metaphor too.
I felt very nostalgic too because I grew up in the begining of the 2000 years (I'm born on 1993) and I had a tamagotchi when I was 12 years old except, I was more like Priya than Meilin in this time 🤭
As a woman, I'm very happy that this movie tackles the subject of puberty and menstruations because people don't talk enough of it.
This movie is so cute, and just seeing the parts of it in this video gave me so many feels
You should react to heartstopper if you haven’t watched it yet it’s a lgbtq coming of age series that I think you’ll like
That moment where the mom is talking to her Tamagotchi just got funnier when I imagined Sandra Oh recording her lines those lines in the recording booth and now I love her even more!
Your reaction was priceless and amazing as always. This is in my top five favorite animated movies ever. I think the last 30 minutes makes everybody emotional and happy at the same time. 😪😊
Such a sweet movie, and so many amazing and emotional moments and messages. Glad to see you loved it so much, and had such a good time watching it 😍
I know that the chaos would make it bad to record that concert but who wouldn't want that Cantonese chant with the 4Town song immortalized
I think you're gonna love Our Flag Means Death! I'd love your reaction to it
I prefer the family drama in Encanto.
You should watch 'Heartstopper' on Netflix.
OH MY GOD YES
Everytime I see this movie I cry at the end, even on reactions. this is my favorite reaction and it was nice crying along with you :P
If this movie took place ten years later, these girls would have RULED Tumblr.
Mushu: I just her bunny slippers couldn't run from cover even though this film takes place in the universe as Toy Story.
Pixar just loves being goofy at the start of the movie then they punch you in the gut in the end.
I was so interested in this movie because they used a BSB song for the trailers and then I was disappointed when their music was not in the movie, BUT it was so good that I was not actually mad at them. xD
I would love to see a commentary on some Once Upon a Time Episodes!
I loved this movie, being a 30 year old black man I felt so seen, and those self talk scenes mei had were so triggering took me back to the time I got caught forging my mom signature, and I was so convinced I was a awful kid I ran away came back a few hours later when I realized I didn't know where to go.
I’m so happy you’re watching this. ❤️
Miriam “WHATS WITH YOUR FACE?? 🤨”. HHAHA I cannot 😂😂✋🏾
you should definitely go watch ANGELINA's reaction to this. She talks a lot about how good this movie is at portraying an Asian-American experience
Seriously the Mom in this movie mad me so mad. Me and my daughter watched together and I almost had to shut it off cause the Mom was ridiculous.
Please react to Heartstopper on Netflix. Its so cute and wholesome and fluffy and it’ll leave you so full of serotonin!!!
This was the first Disney Pixar film to take place in Canada
I assume you're gonna react to "Heartstopper" on this channel. Please do that. Lots of love. ❤️👨❤️👨👨❤️💋👨🌈
That movie makes you cry regardless of your age. Just like "Encanto"
Girl I don’t think liability insurance covers giant magic panda attacks 😭
The dad in turning red deserves dad of the year
You should totally watch the behind the scenes doc for this on D+.
Abby is clearly MVP character. I love her intensity!
Great reaction. One minor detail, though…
In Canada there is no middle school. Public school goes from kindergarten to grade 8 and high school goes from grade 9 to grade 12. Then it’s off to either college or university if one so desires.
