I adore this movie, I genuinely don’t understand the controversy. I LOVE Disney telling REAL stories through animation. First Luca, then Encanto, now Turning Red.
The best worst take I've seen is the fairly infamous "Too Many Turbans and Hijabs". Basically complaining that in a "North American" city it's "woke" for anyone to wear either? Meanwhile everyone who grew up in Toronto was like "this is a very accurate depiction of Toronto". So I guess the real controversy is reality? And white men complaining that movies are universal when the protagonist is male but female characters are "niche" especially when they're not Caucasian female characters which are more universal.
@@cupguin I think you have a point. Most controversy seems to be based on peoples own opinion how things should be on places they never have been visiting, people they don't know or culture they know nothing about. Controversy over this film... I think for some people its just making controversy for sake of controversy. Some do it to get little bit visibility (or have other selfish gains instead trying to point real problems), other's for sake controversy itself and some just for trolling. I just find this film wholesome, wonderful film with absolutely great characters. I love the colors in the film and diversity in characters.
Still makes me think of that running gag in the email episode of 'The Fairly Odd Parents' - where a parent knocks and calls out "What are you doing in there?" and then narrates "I am respecting your privacy by knocking but asserting my authority as your parent by COMING IN ANYWAY!" and then proceeds to break the door down with a battering ram.
From what I've seen, the controversy surrounding this movie is, in fact, because periods are referenced in this and the Red Panda can be seen as a metaphor for puberty. A lot of parents were not happy that they had to explain to their children what periods were because a lot of them either leave it up to sex ed in school or for nature to take its course and scare people with uteruses, who have no idea that periods even exist. (And explain to boys included, as if boys don't also benefit from knowing.) Loved this reaction!
Some of the controversy from my understanding is parents of younger children not wanting their small children exposed to pads/ periods/ & teenage sexuality too soon. But there's ways to deal with it - just like in real life. As a parent you have to answer all kinds of questions from small children, & you just have make it up as you go...but girls are starting younger these days, & need these things gradually explained starting at a younger age. Boys need to know these things too, eventually, as is age appropriate, so they're not ignorant or shocked later.
I love that moment where it's a month away but as a 13 year old a month, especially where you're hiding something embarrassing, feels like forever. And as an adult it's like yep, that doesn't sound bad at all.
It was poor thinking on the parents' part not to have discussed those things (both things) with Mei so late. Thirteen is about four years too late. Mei didn't actually start her period in the movie. But her friend Priya (at least) had already started, because Priya had extra pads with her all the time. So Mei would already know something about it...but maybe not the right things if her parents hadn't already given her the facts. Even before then, Mei was really already living two lives. She kept her life with her friends secret from her parents. She never really wanted to rebel, she always wanted her mother's love and approval, but she just needed some room to grow. And her mother was bat-guano crazy. The Red Panda, as they said, represented the women's emotions and assertiveness, which women in general and Asian women in particular are supposed to keep suppressed. Props to Mei's father, who was the first adult to give blessing to Mei keeping her Red Panda...and who was also still happy to marry Ming after seeing her giant Red Panda.
I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason. But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time. (Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.) People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them. If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.
You mention Lizzo - she and Mei would actually be pretty close in age! With this being set in 2002, Mei would be 33 this year. Speaking of the music, because I saw you vibing to it, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas did the songs for 4Town and Ludwig Goransson did the score.
Also that Daisy Mart scene...when I was Meilin's age, I drew Antonio Banderas as a merman. Would react just like her if my drawings got exposed like in that scene😆

I hear that the staff and crew of Turning Red performed a walk-out protest, shutting down the studio. Demanding that a bill in Florida be struck down. Its apparently called the Parental Rights in Education Bill, however, the media dubbed it the "Don't Say Gay" Bill. A bill that protects children in K-3rd grade from being exposed to Sex Ed from the teachers. Parents in Florida believe that it is too young for kids in grade school to be thinking about that After puberty starts thats fine but not before. Recently, the governor of California has put Florida and other states a no-travel list for tax-paid business travel. Didn't realize that whole states can be canceled, what a topsy-turvy world we're living in.
I love that preya has clealry been through puberty already and is prepared for her friends (she has more curves and has pads and deodorant on hand, she's a prepared Lil lady)
From what I've seen there's two takes that parents take an "I'm against this movie" stance with. The first being the period/puberty thing. Because for some reason they think that kids at the age of hitting puberty shouldn't be exposed to periods. Little boy coming of age stories are OK but girls coming of age stories are not because that includes the horror of periods. Makes no sense to me. It's good for girls to learn about periods before they get theirs, and it's good to normalize it even with little boys so there's less clueless men in the world. The second thing I've seen is conservatives don't like that Mei disobeys her mother and isn't punished for it. It "teaches kids to be disobedient brats" or whatever Completely ignoring the fact that she does get into trouble when she's caught sneaking out to a party and when she attacked Tyler. and the real focus of the story is on how the expectations a parent puts on their kid can cause hurt and divide. That listening to each other and letting the kid grow into their own person can allow for a much better relationship between them.
