Hey everyone just wanted to say thanks for being so patient with me on this one. Been trying to get this video up since this morning and finally was able to get a version passed copyright! Once again if you are new sorry if the blurring or talking is too much, or the watermark is too visible, these are the things I have to do in order to show as much of the movie as I do! So just wanted to explain for anyone who may wonder!! See you next for a surprise movie!! Also apologies I kept calling the panda a bear, just one of those things I misspoke about on several occasions.

The scene where it was revealed Tyler was a 4town fan was both hilarious and heartwarming. Because, you would normally expect them to make fun of him especially after everything he put them through. Surprisingly, they didn’t. Not only are they happy but they even welcome him to the group. I guess now that they know, they have something in common so why not be friends then. It’s pretty refreshing to see something like that in animation.

I love how Tyler character is written. If you pay attention during the movie, he is actually ALWAYS ALONE, he is playing basketball alone, he is the store alone, he only talks with others by making fun of Mei. Also, he uses headband just like Aaron Z of the band. He cleary hides his tastes probably afraid of being see as less than a man. But in the end, he gets embraced by the girls, because they are all also... oddballs in the school and he finds his people.

I *definitely* feel part of the target audience for this one, which is just a delight since so many little details speak directly to my own life experience. I'm certain any girl will tell you just how accurate that first period panic scene was 😂 I laughed so hard seeing how her Mom was prepared for that!
31:53 Actually! I'm positive those were just stick-on earrings! So early 2000s fashion. I was right about the age of these girls during this time period, and god there are so many great details here that I remember: the tamagotchi, old cell phones, CD roms, stick-on earrings, choker necklaces, 4*Town as like a fictional NSYNC/Backstreet Boys group. Even the fact that we hear "Bootylicious" and "Cha-Cha Slide" at that party cracked me up 😂 Those songs were major hits in 2002!

I feel like the Tamagotchi fad had faded by the end of the 90's, because I remember finding one in 1999 and being embarrassed to be playing with it when no one else had one anymore. When I first started this movie, I didn't know what to think of it, but I realized that my reaction was mostly due to me remembering being at that age and being a cringy teenager as well. Like, this movie is really realistic with its depiction of teenage girls, and at the first, I felt like I just wanted to hide under my blanket watching the movie because a lot of their behavior felt so "me", if you know what I mean.
I was a weird girl too, though I didn't go through a boys band phase, and this movie helped me a little more to accept that part of me.
I'm glad you connected with it, I've read that review from a white male reviewer saying barely anyone could connect with that movie being so specifically about asian-canadian culture and womanhood, and it felt so racist and so misogynistic. Glad to see men can love this movie as much as I did.

I seriously enjoyed also liked Turning Red a lot, thought it was a nice endearing movie. Periods are apart of every woman life! It's the reason why women can conceive and give birth in the first place, its because of uneducated taboo stigmatization of menstruation is why women also girls feel ashamed of their bodies natural functions. You got plenty of coming-of-age stories about boys getting boners or having wet dreams, but if you talk about a young girl developing sexuality or womanhood then it "Gross" can't stand stupid double standards. Either way I had a good time with this movie while not perfect it captures that early 2000s vibe so well also what it felt being a tween at that time, we've all had our "cringe" moments as kids okay there's nothing wrong with that, let tweens be tweens instead of growing up fast.

While the conflict between mother and daughter is similar to Brave, bringing this concept into the modern times with adolescence being explored from a girl’s perspective is quite interesting compared to a boy’s.

I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason.
But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time.
(Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.)
People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them.
If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.

The weird and outthere vibes have the exact hint of how life feels when ur 13 and it was so awesome to see a group of women writers be able to so accurately tell a story so many of us can relate to. We all had our weird hobbies and weird friends it was nice to see young girls allowed to be actually weird instead of quirky but still cool

And also how I feel about the "only once change" it just because they never had a opportunity where someone broke their seal and re-released the panda. So the family only assumed you had one chance but it's really just ant time there is a red moon. That's what I figure anyways.

What I love is that this movie so clearly shows that there was no one right way to be and no one choice that was empowering for everyone. The best choice for Mei to be true to herself was to keep the panda, but the best choice for Ming to be true to herself was to transform it, because they were both very different people with very different pandas. For Mei, her panda was a source of happiness and expression and fun and authenticity, but for Ming, her panda was a source of trauma and pain and made her LESS authentically herself and who she wanted to be. And I'm so glad the moral of the story wasn't that "they all just needed to learn to love and accept their pandas and let them out." Because while that was demonstrably the right choice for Mei, it was demonstrably the wrong choice for Ming. Even Sun Yee presented all of them with the choice, and behaved lovingly towards all of them, whatever they chose, without judgement or disappointment - she held the portal letting them transform their pandas if they wanted to, and flew with Mei when Mei chose to keep hers - she helped ALL of them in their choices. And what I love is that Ming DID learn to love her panda, when she was able to take the choice to transform her panda into something that couldn't hurt or traumatize her anymore, so she got to be herself and love on her panda in the tamogotchi. It doesn't make Ming fake or wrong or "not accepting/loving herself" or not being authentic, and I'm so happy that both choices were presented as equally valid and empowering when they truly were made as each individual's CHOICE, and not forced or expected.
It's so important to me that this movie shows that making the empowering choices that are true to yourself and allow you to be your true self may be opposite choices to the people around you, including the people you love. By the very end, both Mei and Ming respect each other's choices, are not judgemental or disappointed, and recognize that their way wasn't the only right one. The right choice for one person may be completely opposite from LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE and that is okay, and making the "expected" or "societally approved" choice doesn't mean you are any less authentically yourself than the person who is breaking the mold, if that choice is truly authentic to you.

Btw, yes it actually is about getting her period. The jokes weren't coincidental..
    Gross red monster.
The way she's walking stiffly when she's in her bedroom? I can confirm that's how we walk when we're trying not to move too much to prevent...an "accident".
    "Prevent any accidents."
Curling up in the fetal position because it hurts.
You can even make a case for the extreme emotions thing, cause a lot of us can attest that extreme emotions tend to make it...worse, let's say.
And the friends neutralizing the panda? A way to show that having friends around to help you through it when you have an "accident" can make it less embarrassing.

This is the kind of support from guys that this movie needs! It made me really happy when you said you could still relate to it even though it was more of a teen girl target audience, because this movie has been getting an UNGODLY amount of hate for not being "relatable for the boys" (and the puberty stuff, but that's a different can of worms), and I'm like, bruh, I'm not a French rat chef and I can still relate to Ratatouille, what kind of a weak argument is that??? So idk, it made me really happy for you to so easily say you can relate to it and enjoy it despite the difference of life experience, it just proves that the people hating on it are being so ridiculous for no reason lol

The beginning of this movie ( and even some parts after) are very pre teen weeb. I saw the trailer and wasn’t really interested because it seemed more like a movie very directly saying it is for little children.
This is my first time watching the film because I adore Nick’s channel and I am shocked at how much I cried with the family honor, the mother and daughter relationship, the debate of expectations of the family vs your own happiness, possible generational trauma, how times have changed and how younger generations are growing faster and different due to their environment (when Mei Mei hit puberty too soon and shocked her whole family especially her mom- that’s why she said she never told Mei Mei cause she thought she had more time), Mei Mei hiding the changes because you’re family never spoke about it and which in a way sheltered you so you’re hiding it and almost harming yourself cause of it because you’re more worried about what your parents would think than your own health. This hit a lot of heavy points in such a innocent and comedic way. I’m sitting here really shocked.
I still feel like most of this movie is mainly meant and bluntly for kids younger than 11 more than other Pixar/Disney movies (ex Luca has very similar vibes) but there’s definitely some adult moments if you can get pass the “child cringe” as people put it because it makes you remember all the embarrassing moments you had for something you thought was super important at that age.
Edit: Luca also has the transformation human/monster issue, family expectations and whether you should follow them or not regardless of your own feelings, feeling guilty because what makes you happy isn’t what you’re parents want, being sheltered, the rebellious teen stage, friendship betrayals and recovery, the child and parents comprising, but they present the stories differently which also kinda refers to how puberty for boys and girls are treated.
I genuinely had no interest in Turning Red, but after watching the movie for the first time technically off this commentary, I might watch it fully and rewatch it.

This reminded me so much of my mom the way she freaked out over boys. My mom was so strict about that when my sister and I were in public school and high school. If you had a crush on anyone in school (and just like in the movie, the boys never even knew about it in most of the cases) she'd jump to the absolute worst conclusions. I wonder if she regrets it now that we're both in our 30's and still single.

But I CAN relate with how I feel like I'll never be good enough. This movie is a 10/10 in my book. It did have a bit more adult humor & puberty talk, but I actually liked that. Yeah sure, there are kids 5-10 watching this, but they have to learn about this stuff. Acting like there is no such thing as puberty is wrong. It is regular body language for someone who is growing into adult hood, and there is no good reason to hide it. Again, I loved this movie so much!
