  • The day we've been waiting for for so long has arrived. Now that we're living in the coach house, we can finally start to literally rip off the layers of 20th century renovations in our chateau to find out which historic features might have survived beneath. The chateau with the story under the floorboards that I mention later on in the video is this one: www.bbc.com/news/stories-4426...
We are Marc, Amy, Clement and Juliette, a French-English family restoring a 33 room medieval chateau and huge estate in southern France. Follow our award-winning, historically-sensitive restorations and our journey towards self-sufficiency and sustainability, with plenty of laughter along the way.
We have just launched a brand new channel, @LostGardensofChateauRosieres to showcase our gardens and estate project. We'd love it if you could head over and click subscribe if you like it!

When I removed the 2 layers of wallpaper in our hallway /stairwells/foyer I found an x and the date 1904. I think the paper installer made their mark and dated the work. The history and stories are what make these old places interesting ❤

Wow, that space is so much brighter and more pleasant already - very much a good call to do that now, even if you won’t finish it soon.
A pity you haven’t found a secret diary yet - awesome story, and thanks for the link. But fun to find some mystery sketches. Plus the new puzzle of the archway.
The dendocronology sounds like a great student project/practice session for the university of Lyon. “Here kid, this could be from any time or place, do your best.” 😁
Fun to see the kids joining in, Clement with his classic enthusiasm and great brush-work, and Juliet with her always-intense concentration. ♥️♥️♥️

Great to see Marc climbing ladders! And Clement in his matching Safety Sandals.🥰 The hall looks so very much better without that wallpaper. Hessian/burlap was a "thing" in the 1970s when rustic and natural were the rebound from the Space Age 50s and 60s. Unfortunately, rough wood and loosely woven fabric really hold dust and dirt. We used to vacuum walls 🤦‍♀ At least you were spared the cream, brown and orange shag carpet in the house when I moved into mine.😱 Design concept is one thing; livability another. Amy, one reason I so look forward to your updates is the history and archeology you bring. So few renovators know what they are looking at when they encounter items like that door. I also wonder about the window at the end of the hall. It isn't centered. Was it an afterthought?

I thought it would be just plaster or wood and no wallpaper didn't seem like the kind of chateau that would at least in the upper levels. I think in rooms that changed more often dining or kitchen you might find something or bedrooms but not hallways. Keep the hessian can always sell it some people like that stuff for crafting as you very well could make cards with it and sell them. I am glad Marc is feeling better to help out :) nice to see Margot :) Clement and Juliette. I love the walled cabinets with keys would be the only thing I would keep regardless of the paper or wood. I'd take a photo and paint or plaster or wallpaper over. But that's me wanting to move forward and finish renovation. Sell it at a reclamation or a brocante donation that hessian it will get loved by someone.
