    Thank you for sharing that story! What I do that works well is I always wear a slim cross body bag, always under my coat or sweater, and then I carry a nicer looking reusable shopping shoulder tote to carry water, umbrella and snacks, etc.

    Happened to me 2 weeks ago in Madrid. Fortunately for me, the pickpocket was clumsy and I felt the zip of my backpack being pulled open. All my valuables were stored at the bottom of the backpack, and nothing was taken. Two young girls were responsible; I guessed that one would retrieve the valuables and the other would make off with the loot. They were pretty brazen in their approach, walking right up to my back on a public footpath and with nobody else behind or next to them them. Detection would have meant instant identification of the culprit, which is exactly what happened. They made off after realising the game was up. Tip: Use a safety pin to secure the main zip on your backpack. This will still give you reasonably convenient access to the contents of your backpack, while making you a less attractive target for these thieving arseholes.

      Do you think a Spanish girlfriend would steal from her boyfriend? I appreciate your comment because I just heard of a case where I suspect a girl is responsible but I normally associate these types of crimes with men, she already has a joint account with him.she is a bit shady.

    I travel alone and hate this happened. I think its important to tell this side of traveling, not just the great views and people. As another solo female traveler I understand the extra precautions we have to take. Great video and thanks for sharing!

    Thanks for sharing. I'm too paranoid to use a backpack as my main travel bag/purse. I only use anti-theft, crossbody bags with lockable zippers. And my phone and wallet are both strapped to the keyring inside my bag using retractable or spring-type (steel-reinforced) cables so I can easily take them out and use them but they will always be attached to the bag.

    Never, ever put money in the pockets of a backpack that you wear on your back. Wear a cross body bag in front, or put your money in a money belt. I was pick pocketed in Rome. You learn from experience.

    It happened to me many years ago in Madrid, I was killing time for my flight to the US, walking around I noticed this guy following me, went inside a building and waited for the thief, the guy jumped up a good foot and then I started to follow him, he started to walk really fast I was laughing so hard I bet he was thinking (this guy it's a better thief than me)!

    Anyone tempted to place a mouse trap in the backpack? But anyways, I bought the transparent packaging wrap for gift baskets from the dollar store and place it in my backpack, it makes such a noisy sound when someone tries to move it. I put money among the pages of a cross word puzzle book and glue the two pages together to secure the money in place, it's for emergency only. :)

    Hey Kimmy, I feel like talking to a friend every time I watch your videos! I also got pick pocketed in Spain (Barcelona) when visiting a tourist attraction. We then went to 3 other European countries that time, but the only place the incident happened was in Spain.. I was very disappointed as I was learning Spanish and expecting a lot from Barcelona. I was always on guard and kept my money safe, so they had nothing to rob, but my backpack open was just really upsetting. At that moment when you realize what happened it's like somebody got into your personal space and took your peace of mind.

    good story! happens to the best of us... i've traveled to 65 countries and consider myself an extremely experienced traveler, but had my iPhone stolen in an exact way in Hong Kong a few years ago... a momentary lapse led me to put my phone in the outer pocket of my backpack which I never ever do but for whatever reason that one time I did as I was rushing to catch a shuttle LOL! :) These pickpockets are very slick!

    It’s not the headphones when I went in 2019 to Barcelona and Madrid alone I got pickpocketed about 16 times it’s when you’re standing near the metro or a tour bus or a city bus there’s a lot of people around and these people are like professionals even without music or anything they can get into your bag without you feeling it believe me. One trick I use especially when I travel solo it’s a wristband you can get it on Amazon it’s called clouds with a Z and it has a zipper it looks like a sweatband like a sweat wristband you can put your credit cards and some cash in there you can put it all the way up to your bicep under your T-shirt or under your jacket and no one will know it’s there. I take a backpack with us for my bottle of water souvenirs granola bar but I never ever put money or cards in their passport and important papers always stay in the safe in the hotel always. Spain is beautiful and worth it but every place you go just be careful and never put money in your backpack.

    Madrid is full of pickpockets. Never have your backpack on the back, call it frontpack! Earbuds, not a good idea. All touristic destinations in Europe are full of pickpockets. Besides that, Madrid is wonderful, but take precautions

    i almost got pickpockets too lucky i sensed it and it slided so fast and i saw him and kept staring he is pretending to ask someone for directions when he is local himself i really wanted to hit him but didn at the same time wanted to tell people around me and yell 😫its better to use fanny pack that can you put under the shirt ir lace to knot them inside the bag or whatever

  • @Pammellam
    @Pammellam 5 лет назад +3

    Someone must have seen what they were doing....the pickpockets.....?? Were you all alone while walking? No one around you, other walkers?? Also moving your money after you left the museum probably told the pickpockets where your money was because they were probably observing you already.
    Also, everybody, we need to get backpacks that LOCK! Or attach our wallets with a chain inside the backpack! Also keep money for that day in your backpack. Put the rest of your money in a fanny pack inside your clothes. Or in your locked suitcase back at your hotel with a chain around it so that it cannot be opened in any event by hotel cleaners.

    DO NOT: be distracted....wear a backpack on ur back....listen to music (esp martika lol)....be aware even when looking at ur phone. I normally like to have my back on a wall esp. on a subway. When eating at restaurants do not hang ur purse on the chair. ALso be careful with the napkin scam, mustard scam or bird poop scam. They may even wet ur back to get u distracted. Remember they love distracted tourists and they work in groups a lot!

    I liked the video even if the content is not very.. Likeable. Haha. I'm glad that at least it was only 'money' and not your papers and things like that. But thats sucks. Europe is full of theft. I'm always worried when i'm in Paris, even if i'm French, you know, people are unpredictible.

    • @Kimmyonaquest11
      @Kimmyonaquest11  7 лет назад

      South Korea was the only place where I felt like I didnt' have to watch my back. If you dropped your wallet, people around you would get your attention and hand it back to you. It's uncommon but anywhere you go, it's always a possibility for theft. It sucks! But I'm grateful, it could have been worse than just $200.

    1.Never put valuables in a backpack. In some places like Bangkok thieves slice bags open with a razor blade.Also thieves wait until you're in a cafe and take off the pack.They then grab it and run.2.Don't use your mobile phone on the street. It takes your attention away from your surroundings and thieves, especially 2 up on a scooter while just snatch it from your hand.3 .Stop playing that irritating background music.

      Thank you for the info. I went and watched. Very interesting! It reminds me of many of the challenges I faced when working abroad. I could fill a book with anecdotes about dealing with French working culture from an American perspective. In French culture, hierarchy and social activities like lunch with colleagues and break time are absurdly important.

    I had a bad experience in Barcelona. While I was hearing my phone and there was a person ran motobike through me and rob my bag which I hold on my hand. Just happened in a second, I ran and shout out but couldn’t catch up with him. Some people noticed and helped me to call the police and they also witnessed. When I waiting for police, I called the bank to lock my cards.It took about 15 mins to wait for the police to come. I think the police in Spain are not good enough. They are too slow and just came and asked some questions in Spainish about the other phone in the bag and told me to go to the police station and report so may be they can find it. The police station it about 15 mins from there by taxi. So I told my mind to forget it. Luckily, my passport wasn’t in the bag because I put it in the safety box in hotel. After all, my mother noticed that might be I had been followed by the robber since I bought some fruits on the street and I took the LV wallet out to pay and a lot money was shown out from that. My mother also saw the boy drive a white motorbike from that but didn’t think he is a robber
