Of my nine "cowboy" hats. Only one has it's original hatband!
Yeeehaw!
Same with me just I'm probably going to change the hat band on it to
When I was younger my hat band was just a plain bandana rolled up and tied. Gave my hat a bit of decoration and gave me an emergency bandana if I ever needed it.
Smart
Thats actually a pretty good idea, one i may have to borrow.
I've done that too. In severe heat I'll drape the bandanna around the back and sides, a la foreign legion. It looks silly, but I'm the one who is laughing on the inside, because the comfort is it's own reward.
@@ScorpionRegent ive done that with a flour sack towel. Which is essentially an extra large bandana.
@@jwatson15 I like it a lot. Making best use of what's available and bigger is often better. That's good thinking.
I love using antler or bone in projects. Thanks for the tutorial along with the history.
You are so welcome! I used a sander on it at work and the shop smelled like burnt bone for 2 hours.
I'm partial to leather hatbands myself. I have a couple that I rotate between my various hats depending on what boots and belt I'm wearing. I know it wasn't a fashion maxim back then. But, I'm just really OCD about my leathers matching.
Thanks for another video, Santee! Enjoyed this one while sitting on the beach. 👍
Awesome!
Ahhhh yes...the first project I undertook after I started wearing a proper cowboy hat.
I made a leather 9mm ammo-belt hatband with my awl and used an old belt for the leather. Tent-grade twine for the stitching.
Came out perfect!
Cool!
I knew a guy who had barbed wire wrapped around his hat as a hat band.
Ouch if you ever hit your head on a beam
THATS SO HEAVY METAL IMMA DO IT
Guess he was a metal head? *badum tiss*
Blah - That would be interesting in a thunderstorm.
A bit ironic if he was a cowboy. Barbed wire put a lot of them out of work at the turn of the century
Careful Santee....I almost got drug to death by a horse and I believe I would have if the grocery store manager had not unplugged him😂👍🇺🇸
HAAH! Well, Dang it, Dan. You need to have better command of the mechanical equines!
@@ArizonaGhostriders 😂
I love your rattlesnake hat band. We don’t have rattlers here, but we do have crocodiles and I’ve seen many variations using croc skin over the years. Some classy, some outlandish. 😂
I bet! Cool.
Howdy santee i realy like your Channel becouse iam a big western and old west fan 🤠
Glad to hear it!
Same
I lose interest in the old west alot then I remember this channel and I am back in love with the old west
@@IAN-hr9jc Thanks!
Every time I see Glenn laugh it cracks me up. Made my own hat band, beaded design with bear fur trim it is 11/2 inches wide on my hat.
So cool. I bet it's a nice one.
good morning Santee :) for mine as i was a shepherd and worked in shearing sheds. ,i had different ear tags from heaps of different farms memories of my time in the Australian outback :)
Very nice! You still have that hat? I bet you do.
I made a band for one of my hats out of 1" wide Native American beadwork. I fastened it with leather strips in the back and finished it off with 1" long bone bead tassels.
Very cool!
Thank You so much for this video. This is a real DIY project for Old West decor. I am going to make a custom homemade head band for both of my wide brim hats to show my own unique style. Keep up the Great Work. Stay safe.
Glad it was helpful!
Looks like a fun project, i might have to make one!
Please do!
Great video Santee! I visited a professional hatter last week and picked up some hatband material as well as some tips and advise!
That is awesome! I can't wait to see what you come up with.
I agree with you the band of the hat should be what you make it to be playing or however you want it. I really like the detail that goes into some of the bands of the head looking back on some of the characters I mean they really did detail on their hat so that tells you about the person. Thanks for sharing this great video 🤠🌵
Thank you!
Went horse hair on my felt Stetson, and leather on the straw. I REALLY like that rattlesnake band your friend made you! Might have to hunt one of those up for myself!
BTW, Happy Birthday! (Good to see the Marshall let you out on good behavior! 😜)
Thank you, Ken! Much appreciated.
What if the snake wakes up ,,???
I like the rattlesnake hat band. It lets people know you're coming, and not to be messed with. An added benefit is that you might even get the nickname "Rattlesnake". How cool is that?! 🤠
Pretty cool.
It has also a function. I use a cowboy hat everyday for farm work and if your interior head liner becomes rags (mine was ripped off by my dog) the hat becomes a little bit loosen. Tightening the head strap makes it fit.
Note that today people buy a new or repair the liner, but in old days, poor cowboys didn't had it so easy
Good point. That happened to me too.
Informative AND hilariously edited? Peak RUclips right here.
Thank you very much!
I love your trusty steed in the beginning!!! Good horse!
Thank you!!
Certain RUclipsrs can get away with short videos. Unfortunately, I could watch yours for hours!!! Keep up the great vids!!! I just wish they were longer!!!
I appreciate that! They have gotten a little bit longer since I changed my work schedule around.
I've always tried to make a good band but now I've got this video for a reference. Thanks Santee, great job!!!
Happy to help!
Always good too see a video
of you folks. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
I've been trying to find a video on hat bands for the past few days! Perfect timing and information as always
Glad I could help!
recently i've made a hatband by myself and i wanted to tell you that it went very great!
Congratulations!!!
Very interesting as usual! My son uses an American flag bandanna as a hat band for his cowboy hat. Thanks again, Santee!
Very cool! We have a fellow out here named "Arizona Dude" who shows up at events with an Arizona state flag hatband. Inceidentally, his shirt is also the flag.
My favorite Hollywood hatband comes from the first episode of Brisco County Jr where the villain of the episode has a hatband made of $100 bills totalling up to his official bounty. "You know when they say you have a price on your head? In my case, that's the actual truth. You'd have to kill me to get that hat..."
OH! I forgot all about that. Shouldhave used that clip. Darn. Oh well! Thanks for the reminder.
Now i know. Thank you for letting me know i needed to know.
Happy to help
I always thought Django’s studded hat band was so perfect for that character. Thanks for the nod to it. Another nice video Santee. 👍🏽
Thank you!
The belt keeper is my favorite because it looks like a belt around the hat kinda designed so that the hat looks stylish 😊
I like 'em all.
It’s that time of the week again. You’re part of my weekly routine! Love the videos. Keep it up!
Much appreciated!
Just last week I was looking for exactly this, and then out of nowhere, y'all came up with this gem.
Thanks, guys!
Happy to help!
Love Arizona
Yay!
I’m always looking for a new hat band! Great video!
Yay! Thank you!
Thanks for the knowledge about Hatbands , Santee !!!!!!!!!!!!
You bet!
Thanks, interesting take on hat bands. Keep up the good work.
Much appreciated.
Thank you Santee for the great ideas, I have two hats that need new bands. I can't figure out how I wore out the bands and not the hats. Good luck with training that horse.
Rock on! He works better when you put money in him, apparently.
Thanks Santee for showing us how to spruce up our western hats. I have been getting into the leather workings and found the suggestions very simple but interesting. Just need to find a 4 foot rattlesnake... lol. 🐍
HA! Well, go down to Texas. I hear they are filthy with 'em!
@@ArizonaGhostriders : I hear Sweetwater, TX has a roundup each summer. Trying for AZ.
@@dalekundtz760 We have 'em here too. Just bigger in TX!!
You like leather ha ha . Beautiful looking hats and bands :) This is something I could have fun with.
😊 thank you. With your talents, you could do some leatherwork!
I wear one with beef leather and it looks pretty good
I bet!
Just lost my Fedora hatband at school. This encourages me to make my own
Great!
Love the hat band that you made. I read or saw somewhere that hat bands were also used to tighten the hat on your head. If the hat was to small, you would wet it and jam it on your head and let it dry. If to big, cinch the hat band until the hat fits. Unfortunately I can't remember where I saw that information.
If you were missing the sweat band, I can see that.
Thanks Santee for another informative and fun video. I was wondering if you could do one on taxidermy in the old west. Thanks again
Yes. I started to. Not sure there's enough really interesting info for its own video, but I may add it into another one.
Bravo......You make even hat bands interesting and regards to Kenny.
Thanks Cleon!
Quit the steed you have Santee. Thanks for the ideas!!!
Deal!
Great DIY-video Santee for us old west geeks :) keep up the good work :D
We will!
Very cool hatbands! About the 🐎..... The thing is.....it takes quarters AND that sound to make the horsey go. Hahahaha!
OOOOOOOhhhhhh. Now I understand what the box next to it was for.
Nicely done. I made a leather band stitched with beads. Currently it sits on a nice felt hat that came with a really cheap looking braided band with aluminum fittings.
Yeah some of those stock hatbands are so cheap looking.
Right off the bat we see good Ole AGR logo dressing up the 21 address Nice, At your end of video helping to keep you safe the AGR logo on your mask.. As usual well done and info full !!!
Right on. Thanks so much!
Most of mine are either braided leather or bead/quill worked suede ... But I have used an old children's dress belt for one.
Great idea with the belt!
Santee wearing a Carmen Miranda fruit hat and he says he needs something more rustic. But you rock it so well Santee! The bandanna keeps it manly!
Thanks.
Loved that Sugarloaf Sombrero ! That would be the hat for me :-) Thank you Santee for another great video !
Any time!
I used to use piggen string had a cheap Walmart hat put a blue and black piggen string on it got a lot of compliments.... now whatever it comes with is what I keep
That works!
Ratle snake 🐍 hat band very cool 😊 nothing escapes you 😊 thanks Santee
😁 Well...some things do. Just ask my wife.
@@ArizonaGhostriders hahahahah ! Me to !
I love the videos, boys. Keep them coming.
Thanks! Will do!
Oh good I've been needing a new hatband
Yeehaw!
Arizona Ghostriders - Once again another great video, thanks. I have found a hat band can also add a bit of weight to a hat to help keep it in place. In high winds a chin strap or a tether is needed, but walking around with your hat tied down all the time makes you look insecure.
"What you got under your hat there stranger, your life's savings?"
"No, just my imaginary friend."
LOL!
I like your tutorial videos on how to make things. You've given me some good ideas. This is going to sound a bit strange, but I'm looking for ways to Rustic up my AR-15 rifles in a Native American fashion.
Rawhide and beaded leather!
And a feather, maybe a scalp!
Witty and informative - a great combo. Many thanks. .
Our pleasure!
Do not forget to stitch band to the hat, otherwise it will fly away, every time when you smack a cow with your hat. Thank you for a video Santee!
HA! Well, some of them for sure.
I've got a couple of hats that could use some help in this department.
Thanks for the reference material!
Any time!
That's a dandy lookin' band, Santee. Nice work!
Hey, thanks!
Just an FYI :
The origin of the hat band was to hide the sweat marks form everyday use. So by the 18th century it was an art
Didn't work well if you use a material hatband....it gets sweaty too!
Oh how much I loved to watch your show this Saturday evening. You made the funniest entrance which again I loved to watch (you look adorable). Best episode on hatbands .Can you do one on wrist bands ? ( or have you made one already ) Santee , thank you very much for your show. Next show I'd like to see you make another likeable entrance. Thanks
Thank you so much! I'll try. Maybe next time I'll put quarters in it.
you do nice work Cheese, thanks so much !!! ... I'm also betting that you wear that black hat with the turquoise feather ALOT more that you are letting on ha ha ha :-)
You're so funny!!!!! Mrs. Cheese :)
Shhhh!!! Joe, only to weddings and funerals.
😂🤣👍👊🤠
Thank you Mrs Cheese !!! ha ha ha 🤠
First thing I do when I get a new hat, off goes the ribbon and on goes a new hat band, I like beaded bands lately, use to put “Calvary Cord” (different colors). I still have some with custom cords, there leather cords with “45 Colt” shells on the ends instead of the “acorns”. 🤙🏼❤️🤠
Yeah, I've seen the shell ones. Fun.
I really love the rattlesnake one
Good!
I cut some strips of black leather and burn my designs and brand into them with a soldering iron and then I poke holes on both ends. Next I will take some thin rope and dye it black and then burn and knot both ends of it. I run it through the holes I poke into the leather and use them to tighten the band around the hat and then I will knot them and let them hang slightly off the back of the hat like tassels. I have also done basic ribbons. I want to do something with rawhide.
A rawhide braid could be cool!
Please do more leather working videos also I love the channel
Ok thanks!
In the way of decently new hats I've always liked Arizona Red and Santee's hat, if I chose an older, beat up looking hat I really like Jerry's Hat
Jerry's hat is really cool. Custom made. Red also has a terrific custom made one.
Being a bigger feller than the average bear, I have to have a hat custom made in size 8. I also have to get a wider brim and a ten gallon crown. Personally I like the Tom Horn style crown. My hat is almost a carbon copy of the one Tom Selleck wore in Quigley Down Under. Minus the hat band he wore. Also, great video Santee!
Now that is a large cabeza, compadre. I bet a good hatband might finish that hat perfectly.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Much obliged Santee. My old man is making me a hatband and a gun belt to match.
I'm surprised the ghost didn't come and steal the rattlesnake band. Normally "is my favorite" is his cue for mischief.
Yes...his hatband is the one with the stamping on it. I think he was more concerned about getting that back.
I was literally just looking to make one of these. Thanks arizona ghostriders.
You're welcome!
Great DIY. Looking forward to more.
Thank you! 😊
Holy Hannah. I'm going to try this on one of my hats or Sombreros. Thank for the fun Saturday
You are so welcome!
Just when I couldn’t find a decent hat band making video , you come up trumps
Thank You! I hope it helped.
Great stuff man love your channel
Glad you enjoy it!
Great video. You really put a wrap around that one. Yeee ha
You know it!
Great Show
Thank You!
This is very helpful. Gives me ideas for my steampunk gunslinger costume. 👍👍
Good
Hey Santee, love your videos, very educational. Can you do one on horses, and the most exotic pr unusual one that were ridden.
Thanks
Thank you! Did one just a month ago on horses.
Ah, perfect timing! I got a week off from work and got two hats that need new headbands
👍
I tend to set my hat upside down on tables when a hook is not available. Lost a mighty great hatband that way. Now, in about four places around my hat, I tack stitch my hat band to my hat, with color matching thread. My latest project is a hatband made with 1/8" round leather, dyed to look rusty, stiffened with lacquer, and formed to look like barbed wire. Sure fools folks.
That is awesome! Love that you distressed it.
This guy is awsome
Thank You!
I like to see a video about stuff they could do customize back then
ok
Cool
Can you do one on what cowboys used to carry on their horse
Check out my saddlebags video.
Very good 🤠😇
Thank You!
Sweet tutorial, Santee. I like leather too.
1:43 ~ _"Not like that."_
Yeah, have to agree with you. Maybe I shouldn't mention that I *literally* a few short hours ago unboxed two leather half-masks, and two leather wrist gauntlets from two different companies. The masks have attachments to actually accommodate filter material. And the gauntlets could pass for period correct ones, from a distance. But yes, I do have proper masks. So.... any chance that copies of that sweet-looking mask of yours will be available at the Merch Shop?
Cool! Well, that mask was handmade, and Teespring doesn't do such things....but if there are masks available, I may put them up there.
@@ArizonaGhostriders
Ah! Understood.
Thanks, Santee. *:)*
For one of my hat bands i was going for a certain look i wanted a leather band with eyelets and i eventually ended up using a womens belt i cut it to length and it looks amazing
I have seen very cool belts as hatbands. Sounds like your is, too.
i love your hat!
Thank you!
I braided a black suede leather lace and pinned it with a silver Celtic knot brooch. Looks great, I think.
Oooo, I bet it does!
Great video Santee
Thank you!
Great video Santee 👍👊🤠
All the ones I have are leather & 1 of them as the barb wired spurs in not real ones but you have given me the idea to make one with real Spurs 🤠 Thanks
🤠 LATER PARD 🤠
🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅
That is awesome! Have fun with the project.
Hatbands also provided a way to do a bit of sizing.
If you don't have a sweatband in the hat, it may help alot.
Cat Woman would make a great hatband for T-Rex!
LOL!!!
I might make one like that for my character
it looks easy enough
It is very easy!
Heya Santee ! love the video as always, can you do a video about city/town planning in the old west ? Preferably with how the railroads affected the towns after their arrival ! Keep up the awesome work.
Thanks for the idea!
Great video
Thank you!
As with most things, it's the little details that really sell the experience.
yes
