I ran into him years ago, after W.A.S.P. I walked into a Clarke gas station to pay, and there he was, the cashier, I asked him, what the fuck happened, he said "I took too many pills , Blackie took the mills and left to the hills and I have to pay my bills"
"It's not W.A.S.P. any more. It's the Blackie Lawless show." Ya know, I have to agree with him. They're playing the same "music" but it's not the same sound or the same soul. Gotta love his character, "We're old, let it go, let bygone's be bygones." ie: make the most of the time you have in this life, and don't take yourself so seriously. Love it.
I cannot see any band, with this guy in it, failing, period! He's that "dude" who loses track of time, wakes up "after a long tour" and it's 30 yrs. later! He's everything an 80's era rock star should be 30 years later...... He's so positive, I say give em a reality show, driving an ice cream truck, and playing gigs at night! I would love to go fishing with him, or just hang out for a day. IDK how I wound up watching this, but I'm happy I did!
I always thought he was very underrated as a bass player, and that canary yellow B.C. Rich Ironbird bass he played back in the day was one very cool instrument.
He still got that killer Johhny Rod look in his eyes. This man is a legend, should be hailed as Nikki Sixx or Rudy Sarzo. Johnny was part of the 80's bass attack along with Sarzo, Juan Croucier.
Excellent interview, honest and real, a true rock star, talks straight with plenty of energy and passion, and a bloody great bass player....W.A.S.P are my fav band ever, and he was one of the originals...I once messaged him on Twitter, and he replied immediately....Love the guy.
@@erikblazen9512 sloppy or not , everyone going crazy on stage is sloppy , but he has a thing called "the groove" that is better than robotic perfection of the shit on the radio today
If you notice, he got the WASP logo on shoulder. Johnny rod for me was a big part of the show Up until his departure sometime after the Crimson Idol tour ended, I hope before WASP calls it quits,Chris, Blackie & Jonny play a show together
I love Johnny Rod. He is straight up and honest. I met this guy at The Marquee Club in London at a ‘secret’ W.A.S.P. show two nights before their 1992 Donnington Monsters of Rock show, and he was the best famous guy ever, where most famous people can be douchebags when you meet them, but Johnny Rod stayed with my friend and I and we sat on the stage together and talked and got photo’s too, and he was so super cool and so friendly and naturally funny too, it was the best experience of our lives, and we left the show happier even than after the Donnington show.
Cool interview. Johnny Rod is a trip so much energy and genuine love of music likable guy for sure. I would also love to see a W.A.S.P. show again with Johnny and Chris.
Saw him with King Kobra opening for Queensryche at the Hollywood Palladium in 1985. One of the best shows I ever went to. King Kobra was awesome. So was Queensryche, they played the entire Warning album as well as the EP.
@@davidsmythe7645 yeah theres like 4 songs he wont do amymore. And he wont play in the US ever again. He makes way more money and gets much bigger venues in Europe.
Johnny is a great bass player and Chris Holmes is a talented guitarist I would love to see W.A.S.P with them and Steve Riley on drums it would be the best band live. I know because I seen the Electric Circus tour and it was rockin'
Johnny is so enthusiastic & totally bonkers at the same time... a wasp reunion would be great but seems unlikely to happen as Chris Holmes already said he wouldn't ever go back...
Johnny is fucking great, loved King Kobra when Ready to Strike came out I was cranking it up around the clock for months. So glad I got to see him live with WASP in Germany opening for Iron Maiden. Got to live the greatest days of music and not deal with the garbage we have to hear today.
Hey Johnny Rod... Saw you Live in Hays ks in 85 when u were in King Kobra... Holy Cow I loved Ready to Strike and still do.. In my CD player right now..you all opened for Autograph.. What a great concert..CHEERS..
One of the best bass players through all the years. And hear what he says: It is the truth. What a cool guy you are, Johnny ! Genuine funny and energetic ... only intelligent beings have that !
Razor Roberts, well he ain't from the day1 line up but he was in W.A.S.P from the circus till crimson so in my opinion an integral member of the blackie n Chris homes W.A.S.P
Razor Roberts the original bass player was blackie and id assume blackie would want to play guitar if he went through with the concept of a reunion tour so in theory Johnny would play bass.
Wasp is alive and well. They work in Europe and South America rather exclusively. Rock and Metal in the US is dead.. No way to make a living here anymore unfortunately.
Wow what a legend!!! loved the energy n grit n stage presence he bought to w.a.s.p. ! This guy is the reason I started playing bass guitar in the first place ... 🎸saw em live in 2011 just wish I’d seen em back when lawless, holmes, rod n Riley was the line up 😔.....
I LOVE IT! I got to meet Johny Rod back stage at a concert when he was in King Kobra years ago in Columbus, OH. He was a rock star back then and still today!
Fair play to ol' Johnny. WASP were pretty decent for a good few years and he was a part of that, especially on stage. He comes across like a good crack too. All the best to him.
One of my favorite bassists. Dude still has the passion for music after all the years, the ups and downs. He's like a kid excited he just learned his first lick and it's a contagious energy. I was glad Blackie moved to lead because it left the bass position open to doing more without having to carry vocals as well. Enter Johnny Rod. It's funny that he mentions KISS as such a big influence. Blackie seemed to be more about 'business' and theatrics like Gene was, than about the music. Hyper aware of 'the brand' of the band. The party guys clash with people like that- Ace and Peter in KISS, Johnny and Chris in WASP.
He should be in a bigger band. He’s still got a ton of energy, he’s a very underrated bass player and he’s got great backing vocals.
He was a paramedic for years and years

When did Johnny Rod turn into Mikkey Dee?
