- Today is my birthday, and the launch of The Origami King! This is a video I’ve prepared in celebration of the Paper Mario franchise. Both Paper Mario (N64) and Color Splash are well known for their Shy Guy representation, but which one did it best? Today I'll be comparing the original game to the fifth game of the series, judging all the different Shy Guy types & their significance to the story.

in the japanese version of color splash, black shy guys have the exact same name as anti guy, so they were probably originally meant to be the same species
I love the idea behind the Shy Guy Army. The Mario series has a habit of making species leaders kings (King Goomba, King Boo, King Bob-omb, etc.), so General Guy was a refreshing change of pace. Made for a funny contrast against the Shy Guys' playful nature, too.
I really miss King Goomba...
King Goomba is also known as Goomboss, having his own original name.
Heh change of pace. The name of his battle theme is ‘Keeping Pace’.
We never got a Shy Guy partner in Paper Mario! :(
Well we are friends with Bandy Andy in the Glitzpit lol
the shy guys are such a perfect blank slate for whatever design you wanna go with. desert theme? mariachi guy. jungle theme? spear guy. theyre perfect.
Did you know gourmet guy and big Yoshi are related? (I just call gourmet guy fat shy guy)

Honestly Colour splash is underrated, the battle system may be sloppy but the rest is solid.
It also have the best Humor in the Entire Mario Series
Except on character design*
Antonio Aguirre Yeah but our standards kinda dropped after sticker star
There are some good people. good designers, artists, writers all trying to make a good game, but are held back by stupid leaders and decision makers...
Color splash is a very fun game, and it's battel system is alrigth not final Fantasy but good engouh to enjoy it
1:43 where is the spy guy? I don't see him anywhere.
Why is goombario talking about nothing?
My biggest criticism on Color Splash; they could had done a lot better with backstories and explaining more about some aspects of the Shy Guys, as most of the important scenarios never got touched on since they're a major species in this game.
Why does Bowser have a whole army of Shy Guys trained to slurp paint and for what reason? Did he planned on using them for a invasion at some point? It was never explained, they are just there out of convenience and that's very poor for storytelling.
The Shunned Guys; a wasted potential that was only used for shock value and completely been downgraded as a regular enemy in its later encounters. What made a Shy Guy into a Shunned? Where's the explanation behind their corruption? Why isn't there a level or a side quest with a focus on that, or part of the story that involves the evil black paint?
Because the devs wanted to focus so much on humor, surprises, and random situations in terms of progression and story, Color Splash lacked focus on explaining the importance of some origins.
Don't worry ;)
Shunned guys are just very flexible shy guys, there's nothing more to it
This video is a good example of why I like both games, each one has something unique and worth experiencing in it.
Every Paper Mario game has something going for it (yes, even the weakest of them all, Sticker Star), each one of them has its flaws, but overall, they're all good games, in one way or the other.
Also, Shy Guys are awesome, the more we see of them, the better.
6:30 is actually very emotional. he doesn't deserve this fate
Shy Guy’s in Color Splash are great. I love Color Splash.
Same here! I’m so glad Shy Guys were a focal point in CS-so many great moments with them 😁 there were more Shy Guys than Goombas!
The Shy Guy that we meet in the train was really sad for me. NGL
Shy Guy was robbed. He should've been the Mario baddie that got added to Smash instead of Piranha Plant.
Yeah
You didn't mention that Shy Guys appear in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario as audience members
You’re right-I did consider mentioning them but I wanted to focus on the two PM games I feel represented them best. I would’ve also had to bring up Sticker Star & the jungle
Shy Guy is My Favorite Mario Enemy, and i love their Representation in the Mario RPGs
Pretty ironic since they're not even Mario enemies
@@chickennoodlegamer915 Yep
Thx
I've never played color splash but from the video, it seems like 64 shows us what they're like while color splash shows us who they're like.
Regardless, they're still probably my favorite standard enemy of the Mario Series.
Spy Guys also appeared in Super Mario RPG but would immediately flee the battlefield when combat starts
Happy birthday!
During my playthrough of the shroom temple in Origami King, in one of the final chambers I stumbled across two black shy guys, boasting a creepy dialogue exchange and everything. Finding the game obnoxiously easy up to this point, and having seen little enemy variety throughout the course of the game, I nearly had a heart attack out of both joy and fear that these were anti-guys; previously one of the strongest enemies in the Paper Mario franchise. Perhaps now my tens of thousands of coins and dozens of overpowered items would finally have some use. Imagine my disappointment when I realized that they were just a variant of normal shy guys that I managed to defeat them in one hit like most other entities in the game.. big sad, that could've been a really cool and memorable moment. (Also super weird they don't really show up again after that, like what was even the point. lol)
you forgot the shy guy who crashes your game when fighting him
Color splash is best paper Mario fight me >:)
I like both. :D
Same here! I think both games are worth playing ☺️
Reply 1 if you like RedShyGuy, reply 2 if you like GreenShyGuy, reply 3 if you like BlueShyGuy, reply 4 if you like YellowShyGuy, and reply 5 if you like PinkShyGuy.

To this day, I still think General Guy and his army are kids.
I’m waiting for Dark Aspects of Origami King

Fatty shy guy makes giant eggs for yoshi
That shy guy on the sunset express I liked, but then he died and now I’m sad, I’m connected to Mario enemies ok?
Heh... My people
what a nice video, and great analysis on how the newer games may not have as much unique *visual* variety, but individual variety certainly exists and makes for some memorable moments.

I like PinkShyGuys
