  • Living in a van can have its challenges when it comes to stealth parking as a van life traveller in Australia, here are some tips to help get you started. Safety is my number one priority and as such I don't ever park in remote areas at night on my own, safety in numbers as a solo van lifer.
    When I am looking for parking, some of my tips are street parking in high density housing areas when in cities, hospitals, backpackers and hotels can also be good options. Then worst case scenario I will look for petrol stations or MacDonalds car parks, but they can be pretty noisy.

    I concur completely Christie. The only thing I'd add is that if you are in an area that you are a little concerned about, is to have your van pointing out so that if you have to leave in a hurry you don't have to back out, turn around etc.. you just drive forward, and you'll have headlights to help if dark..
    Having said that I have had three years of on and off travelling including a six month trip doing the big lap and have never had any trouble, but being vigilant is common sense. Happy travelling.

    The other day, I was at Bunnings all day working on putting in a new fridge. I even went inside the Tradies area and it started raining was very handy toilets free drinking water chilled and even free coffee if you have a PowerPass . I asked the guy on the door. He said it was fine to stay there that they have people there all the time. It was reasonably quiet considering I was right in a big town. I have been free camping for decades never been fined. Talk to my way out of a few though.

    Great tips, thanks for sharing. I’ve been enjoying doing some stealth parking too. Thankfully I’ve never had any trouble so far but thanks for the tip about beeping the horn. I hadn’t thought of that. It’s definitely trickier for us women who have to worry about how safe we are in places.

    Love your videos, and your awesome Toyota camper. When I used to travel, I would park near Police stations when possible. I would also tell the officers behind the desk my purpose, and most of the time they were fine with it, especially in small country towns.

    Reasons to watch your vids:
    1) I have a 21' RV - starting out to travel the US to visit all of the National Parks
    2) The drone shots are beautiful - I hope to upload my own examples
    3) Learning about solo traveling
    4) The serenity in your voice... Please start a channel voicing bedtime stories ;-)
    Keep up the good work

    I cycle and motorbike tour and road trip in my station wagon. The bicycle and motorbike are the easiest to find camping spots, often it's behind a few bushes on the side of the road or down a track. Whereas the car is a lot harder, but often down a side road and try to keep away from camping areas with lots of people. Had a few unique experiences on the moto while camping. Woke to a farmer running laps around his paddock while I'm camped by his fence and the roadside bushes. Another time in Tassie camped down a track I found a modern looking plaque amongst the ferns of a person the died twenty years prior. Went back there a few years later and there was a little garden around the plaque. Maybe his ashes were put there.

      I didn’t want to come back to sea, I was pretty much done with it tbh but I’m doing it for the love of vanlife lol! I sold my large van and bought a smaller one but turns out I was ripped off, it’s a death trap according to my mechanic! I did get some money back off the sellers (after legal advice!) but she still needs a fair bit of work. However I love my van, she is perfect for me, so I decided to fix her up as I know then she’ll be safe and reliable for future adventures! Just needed some dollars to get the work done, meanwhile I shall live vicariously through you 🤗

    When I stealth camp in residential areas I always make sure, in the morning, I jump through to the driver seat when getting out. So never use the sliding door.
    Just feels more comfortable and doesn’t look so obvious.
    Yes big fines in Queensland if found sleeping in your vehicle.

      Think about signage for your van (magnetic) or for rear windows. Put in fake name of business like cleaning, chemical supplies, etc something they wont want steal. I have a fake costume clothing hire sign

      Consider recording a savage dog growling and barking. If you are disturbed during the night, turn it on and tell the recording in a deep voice to get "Down King" or similar. Indications that a large, savage dog is present will ensure those disturbing you make themselves scarce. Worked for a friend of mine.

    Hey! Love watching your videos, I have a question.. is your van diesel or petrol? What do you recommend and why? I'm looking to get a slwb / commuter and wanting to know if diesel or petrol is better ❤️

    • @eucalyptdesigns
      @eucalyptdesigns  28 дней назад +1

      Hi, thanks so much for the feedback and the question! Gypsy runs on petrol, but to be honest I am not mechanically trained so I can't really give you too much advice on that, all I know from previous research is that you may get about 500K kms out of a petrol but a diesel you may get up to 1 million kms. It may be more costly to run and repair a diesel though. I would definatley stick with the Toyota though, I've heard some horror stories on the road about some other vehicles. Hope this helps! ☺

    • @TeganBlayden
      @TeganBlayden 27 дней назад +1

      @eucalyptdesigns Thank you for your reply 😊 I'll definitely keep that in mind when looking at vans.. either a petrol on low kms and mechanically sound or a diesel on a little more kms that's also mechanically sound.. ahhhh, the process of getting a van! But I am so grateful you replied ❤️

    I agree dont park on your own in remote areas. Recently i hired a juicy van and camped on an off road of the great ocean road. It was an isolated track and at 3am someone drove in to the rear of my van and then deliberately reversed and drove into the front. Luckily they then left and the van was driveable so i got out of there. It was a costly and scary event.

      Interesting, I know that there is very little free parking for camping along the Great Ocean Road. I get the vibe its a place were the locals have a lot of attitude like.. 'not in my backyard' and 'you must pay to stay'. That's no excuse for damaging other people's property but WOW some people are vindictive!

    • @freebirds67
      @freebirds67 27 дней назад +1

    Things that women have to keep in mind when travelling alone is obviously different to the male which is extremely unfair really, did think only seeing you once a week usually when I saw this pop up thought wow that week went fast , three years in the van that’s certainly a commitment = if you want the rainbow you’ve gotta put up with the rain , take care you = me .
