I originally interpreted this as being a song about suicide. While I am aware of the actual story behind it, now, the basic idea of a person becoming depressed and leaving holds. Regardless of the intent, this is one of the most memorable, iconic, and moving songs in the fandom. The vocals are balanced perfectly - both with each other, and with the backing track - and the song itself morphs and changes at a nice, casual pace. There's no sense of grating repetition; unique bridges and a lyrical progression keep it fresh from start to finish, and deepen the overall sense of melancholy behind the piece. It's unusual, achieving a sense of melancholy using happier sounds, but it speaks to one of the more deep parts of human emotion; for many of us, after a long period of misery, we start to break down to a point where we become overly quiet and polite. Broken, on some level. Any kind of release is welcome at that point. Furthermore, many of the most emotionally painful things we do in life end up feeling bittersweet like that. Pinkie feels as though she's lonely, like she's worthless too her friends and isn't needed. This can also arise from jelousy of seeing others who have closer friendships to her friends than she does. Again this forms to her hiding herself from the world, not wanting to hurt her friends or take them away from their own friends, but not feeling the need to be there herself. It's a feeling of self sacrifice, isolating oneself from your own friends in order to allow them to be happy with the friends they have. Kind of rambling but I hope whoever reads this gets what I'm saying.
