I do get a sense of melancholy. It's quite possible it is a metaphor for death, others might argue otherwise.

I personally like to think of this song as the insane lamentations of the creepypasta human girl pinkie pie was supposedly modeled after before she throws herself off of a building thinking she could fly.

I feel as though this song isn't about death but a story of loneliness. Pinkie feels as though she's lonely, like she's worthless too her friends and isn't needed. This can also arise from jelousy of seeing others who have closer friendships to her friends than she does. Again this forms to her hiding herself from the world, not wanting to hurt her friends or take them away from their own friends, but not feeling the need to be there herself.
It's a feeling of self sacrifice, isolating oneself from your own friends in order to allow them to be happy with the friends they have.
Kind of rambling but I hope whoever reads this gets what I'm saying.

I have TWO theories!
1: The song is an opening to a fanfic that's based on an alternate ending to the episode "Party Of One" So instead of being happy again... She leaves her friends.

A sensational tune like this deserves views! I've been addicted to it since it was released and this is a dead cert for top 3 in the top ten countdown, very likely for first and a good spot in the everfree top 100. This is the tune that puts you up there with the big names such as toaster and tombstone, well written, sung, produced, i even managed to get a piano instrumental kinda done for it!!! Some peoples say this song could be about Pinkie Pie's dead, but I thing it could a some kind of escape. Yeah. Escape from Ponyville. Why? Twillight become a Princess. That could be reason. Everyone is focused on Twillight and nobody has a time for parties, and fun. Yeah. It could be a reason. But it isn't escape after death or something like that. It could be escape in dreams. You know. Pinkie Pie needs a time to think and her soul need a quiet place. Place without anybody. Like a moon. It is just my theory (and sorry for my English. I'm still learning).

This song never fails to bring tears to my eyes.
I originally interpreted this as being a song about suicide. While I am aware of the actual story behind it, now, the basic idea of a person becoming depressed and leaving holds.
Regardless of the intent, this is one of the most memorable, iconic, and moving songs in the fandom. The vocals are balanced perfectly - both with each other, and with the backing track - and the song itself morphs and changes at a nice, casual pace. There's no sense of grating repetition; unique bridges and a lyrical progression keep it fresh from start to finish, and deepen the overall sense of melancholy behind the piece.
It's unusual, achieving a sense of melancholy using happier sounds, but it speaks to one of the more deep parts of human emotion; for many of us, after a long period of misery, we start to break down to a point where we become overly quiet and polite. Broken, on some level. Any kind of release is welcome at that point.
Furthermore, many of the most emotionally painful things we do in life end up feeling bittersweet like that. Often, we must do something painful to take care of the ones we love. Sometimes, we have to leave them.
Those are the things I find myself thinking about as this song progresses. The artists involved should feel immensely proud, whether they intended for that exact emotional response or not; this is a true work of art, and I won't stop sharing it with people until it gets the exposure it deserves.
