    At last, the manual Porsche 992 is here! Stick shift may well have been available in the States for the last year or so, but more stringent EU emissions legislation has meant the 'box has needed a bit more work before Porsche could get it on the road in Europe. So, after TWO YEARS of 992 production, is the manual transmission worth the wait? And has Porsche at last perfected the 7-speed stick shift after nine years of trying?
    I sample one of the first manual examples of 992 Carrera S in the UK to find out, after giving you a detailed run down of the history of the manual transmission in the Porsche 911. Thanks to Porsche Cars Great Britain for the loan of the 992, and Paragon GB for the loan of the 2.0-litre 911, 993 Cab, and 991.1 GTS.

    I have never driven a Porsche, can't afford to. But I am equally all for manuals and generally get upset that the more lucky ones may have a hand in making it disappear for the ones that still want to make the dream come true and finally have the chance to drive or even own such a masterpiece. So thank you for fighting for it and making this video so we can feel with you!

    Unfortunately the third pedal is vanishing, I work in automotive engineering. It actually started pretty recently in the EU, about 10 years or so, technology has finally caught up to European customer demand. Thankfully proper hot hatches are still offered with manual shifting, I've tried many autos from dual clutch to the 8 speed ZF, can't enjoy any of them. Manually shifting makes even a dull drive enjoyable.

  • @nateisright
    @nateisright 3 года назад +8

    I don’t understand why Porsche released the stick shift version in the S rather than the base. At a certain power level, the PDK makes a lot of sense. The base engine is powerful but doesn’t overwhelm. The stick shift encourages the driver to wring the performance out of engine and therefore seems more a natural pairing with the base car.

    Very interesting review. Thanks for the history. I have owned a manual 911 for 17 years and still enjoy it. I do believe however, that the 992 manual is an afterthought on the part of Porsche. The gear change surround does not fit the rest of the centre console and there's a cupholder right where your elbow would be when changing gear!

    • @alv8253
      @alv8253 2 года назад

      I do however think the console fills out and looks better with the 7MT, and although i agree with the cupholder comment, you can replace that with the flush tray pocket that's included.

    Having 5 freakin slots for upshifts is just ridiculous.
    R, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th. 😂
    There is even a vid with the Carrera GT that only has 6 gears and the driver said he mistakenly shifted into 5th vs 3rd.
    I think Porsche has one of the best manual shifters too pertaining to their 6 speed but some have complained that the early version of their 7 speed gates were just too close together.
    I still have my 6 speed 3 pedal E46 M3. It’s good enough for me to satisfy my rowing through the gears. I don’t recall ever shifting into the wrong gear either.
    My F430 is F1 and it shifts fast enough too. I don’t like Ferrari’s ball shifter click gate. Many have issues going through the gears and 1st to 2nd is often difficult to engage.

    I’m telling you guys right now. If you want a car that’s going to go up in value in the next 10-15 years, buy a sporty car with a manual transmission right now!
    Automatics have saturated the market, due to demand, and manuals are getting rarer and rarer with every year that passes by. There are still a lot of people (aged 25+) who grew up with manuals, and when these people become older, and are looking for a mid-life-crisis car, they’re going to reminisce about the good old days driving a manual, and will start paying good money to have those memories back. Porsche would no way be giving away transmissions, and the cost of the PDK would, of course, be factored into the asking price. Anyone buying new would be mad to not negotiate a sizeable discount if buying a new car.

    While there are still a loud minority who want manuals in modern daily drivers, more drivers want the PDK. Porsche is not leaving money on the table ;)

    Have driven both. PDK wins hands down in every respect. Faster, more efficient and frees you up to enjoy driving the car without having to use arm and leg muscles to inefficiently go through the gears. Why anyone would want to install engineering from the first half of the last century in a technological masterpiece like the 992 is beyond me (and most 992 buyers).

    Part of the problem is that you can't get the manual in the base cars.

    Spare a thought for Australian enthusiasts - manual will not reach our shores at all, except for the GT cars! Hopefully the Carrera T will be available in manual form in Australia, but I’d prefer a manual Carrera S. It’s a bit sad not to have the same choice as other markets, especially when the price of a 911 here is close to double what it is in the USA and UK.

      @@tonymcflattie2450 For sure, but this is all about the manual and TBH, I don't want auto blipping on a manual car. There's no point as it takes away from the interaction, and frankly, if one has to have auto blip on a manual then they've made the wrong choice of gearbox.

    I prefer the PDK for the same reason I like ABS, pasm, traction control and torque vectoring and I am sick and tired of all those so called enthusiasts raving about the manual.
    And I have driven some of the finest manuals ever made including the original NSX and the Honda S2000.
    My 2021 992 CS in GT silver is almost here...with PDK.
