What’s your biggest mental challenge when doing a long distance backpacking trip? Was it something that surprised you, or were you prepared? If you’re planning a future hike, what mental aspect concerns you the most?
Excellent topic….thanks for itemizing some things we need to mentally prepare for. It was almost a stunner for me when you said we wont be the same no matter how many miles we complete - not sure why that hit me so hard, but guess I’ll find out.
Really appreciated hearing your thoughts on this this morning. I'm turning 50 in a couple of months and am a fairly experienced backpacker, but have multiple longer hikes in the 100-500 mile range planned over the next few months and have been a bit concerned over the mental aspect. I've bailed on a longer hike before, but feel like I'm in a different (and maybe better) place mentally to take these on and am excited about the challenge for the most part. Working consistently on the physical preparation and trying to prepare for the mental challenges as well.
Happy Birthday 🎂 in a few months! I envy your hiking plans. ☺️. Sounds like you will be prepared in all the good ways…physically and mentally. Now, the hard part will be waiting for Spring to arrive again so you can get out and explore and enjoy those trails. 🏕️

Wish I’d seen this before my mini-through-hike - you make phenomenal points!

@@Mtnsunshine Thank you. The first of those hikes will actually be in December, so not so long to wait now, thankfully!
