Hi Joy, I have enjoyed watching you for a couple of months now, and I have been inspired by you and a few other women to take up hiking. I will be a newbie but am up for the challenge. Thanks for all the tips and information you share. Have a great rest of the year!
All good points. Good health is fleeting, especially the older we get, and it is easy to spend all your time planning for "one day" and then find the days have run out. You need to seize every opportunity. I would add that an imperfect or shorter hike today beats the perfect, longer hike you are planning in the future that you never get to, because life got in the way. I will also say it is easy to become obsessed with "hobbies". Especially ones that are potentially beneficial, like hiking and backpacking. We tend to justify the obsession by rationalizing that "it's good for us". And, being a man, I tend to get that "I am doing it no matter what" attitude thinking that I am just being "persistent" and "tough". Good qualities to have, but they too can also be misused out of context, and I have to he careful about falling into that mindset. You have to find a balance and keep priorities straight. You obviously have found your balance in putting your health and your family first, and hiking second. We should all be pursuing this same balance you clearly exhibit!
The older I get the more I think change and adaptation is the norm. For years my life was providing for my family. Kids grew up and left. My body changed, slowly at first, now more rapidly. Retirement is less than a year away. If I’m gonna hike those tall hills I’d better get to it because there will come a day when I can’t no matter what I do. But it isn’t all bad. The gear available today is many many times better than what was available in my youth.😎
Enjoyed this thoughtful discussion Joey. I've just injured my ankle (2, Grade 3 ligament tears).Recovering slowly, so this is a very timely video. At 71 I do shorter hikes of 1 to 3 weeks with rest days factored in to prevent injury. Hiking now is about enjoyment, mental and physical health, achievement and adapting to new experiences. Would love more on these topics.
A very well timed video. I was planning on attempting the AT and was up to 10-15miles a day walking to get ready. 3 1/2 months ago I broke my knee in tree places and the Dr. advised me incorrectly and it got way worse. I say a different Dr. and he immediately saw the brakes and this where I’ve been the last 5wks, no weight bearing until surgery in a week and a half and then 3 months (if speedy recovery) or 9 months (if three repairs are needed) of no hiking. That being said, I’m still getting out and am planning van adventures with a friend in the mean time. Thanks for the reminder to keep pressing on, do what you can while you can and always remember to be grateful and thankful. FINISH WELL!!
Enjoyed the video. My dream of Thru hiking Damascus to Harper's Ferry was changed just recently due to all the horrible damage done to those areas Helena hit. You just never know what might happen in life. I am a nurse in a nursing home. Life is short. Enjoy the moments you have doing what you love.
Life has a way of biting you in the butt. Nothing turned out like I thought it would. I hate you got one of those "wonderful" husbands. So thankful you have someone now that seems to cherish you. I didn't know that low vitamin d was linked to osteoporosis. 😳 Appreciate the video and sharing your life changes. It's comforting to know we aren't alone in the crazy life boat.
Enjoyed this video very much.
Lovely! Thank you for sharing your story. ❤
Amen to everything you said! Thx for sharing your remix! Keep inspiring! 🌻💛

I’m so sorry you’re going through that. Hang in there and heal quickly!
Thanks for the encouraging video. Life is short; enjoy what you can while you still can!

So sorry to hear that. I hope you can revisit your dream when that area recovers. It will, in time.. My heart goes out to everyone affected.
