That always threw me, too. Not having watched the whole series front to back, Frank always struck me as gruff & crotchety for their own sake. But seeing moments where there really was some softness at his core really got you.
And God...Frank talking about how his father hit him & saying he tried hard not to be like him, how would YOU respond sitting across from him & hearing that?

I love this show and when Robert was talking about there may not be another half for him I really felt bad for him because I know if Marie wouldn't have kept on pushing him I really felt that Robert would have been fine. The simple matter is that what Robert said is true...maybe there isn't another half out there. Some people are just going to be alone. Yes it may be sad and depressing but it's the truth.

@@wspencerwatkins I'm guessing they are annoyed because Marie could be incredibly manipulative, and this is one of the few moments in the show where she acknowledges that she knows exactly what she's doing. But I actually like this episode for that reason. Because despite the misguided nature of her meddling, we can see that it comes from a place of love.
I also love that symbolism in this episode....Marie is a tough cookie to crack, and it takes a literal FBI agent grilling her, before she finally lets down her guard enough to tell the truth about how she feels. It's a very raw moment but the fact that it happens at the hands of the FBI is a layer of humor that I don't think everyone always gets.

    • @ealanmontgomery2304
      @ealanmontgomery2304 Год назад +2

@PowerDiva Exactly, despite her endless meddling, Marie usually knows exactly what she's doing. She had a small outburst during the "Ride Along" episode, where we saw there that she didn't like to think about the danger in Roberts' job. But instead of breaking down she dotes... and smothers (and low key sabotages). I loved this performance- there is more vulnerability here than Marie would ever normally show.

Another sad moment from the finale was when Ray asked everyone how they reacted when they thought he had died and he was mocking Debra and Frank told him off, saying that he saw Debra fall apart and hoped that he would never have to see that again. That finale is brilliance. Everyone has their point of view with sitcoms and particularly with how they end but that one is damned near perfect. What you are missing is it is NOT about Ray. Its not supposed to be. It is about the family. Every single family member has an unforgettable moment in that episode. Deb breaking down and immediately calling on Robert, Robert's reaction of true love for his brother, Frank showing how much he truly loves Marie when he is thinking about it later, Marie cooking for the whole family as the series fades. Through all that, the episode still is mainly jokes. Jokes that hit. That is not easy to do. I honestly think that is the best series finale of any long running network sitcom.

actually i would argue that ray does grow a bit, he's not going to be fixed over-night, but he shows debra in his own way he cares about her truly, and then at the end when everyone is eating, they say the tables to small,
rather then some quip or telling anyone to leave, ray says,
"then we need a bigger table."
With one of the points of the series being how ray and Debra hate the parents coming over so much for ray to say, "well we need to include room for everyone," was a great line to leave the series on.
after all the series is not about ray it's about the family.

Zia M. They really are brilliant with their delivery. The pauses and stutters they fit into their lines really makes you forget that the whole thing is scripted. In modern sitcoms, everyone says their lines so flawlessly that it seems like a grade school play. The writers are brilliant as well. The beauty of this show is that there aren't multiple stories going on in the same episode. Everyone seems to find some way to get involved in the main issue. And the conversations are brilliant. Think about how in modern day sitcoms, the longest continuous conversations last maybe a few minutes. The writers of these shows have trouble coming up with creative ways of evolving the discussion as it happens, so they choose to stop them constantly and switch scenes all the time. In ELR, one conversation might last over half the episode, and they find very natural ways of getting all characters involved. They take you on a journey instead of asking you to refocus on a different situation.

*UPDATE* (four years ago i made this comment that grabbed a lot of negative and positive attention. I was engaged to a man who i spent seven years wit (on and off) , he passed away two years ago. I am now trying to move forward with my life at age now 27, although I have met someone else since my fiance's passing, I have grown to accept whatever life gives to me.
I cried when Robert said there may be no other half for him.
I'm almost 24 living in a world where all my friends are now married with kids and I'm barely trying to get through college.
I want to marry someday but somehow i always get my heart broken and it ruins me each and every time. As each relationships fails, my own heart starts to fall apart piece by piece.
I feel like maybe i need to accept there's no one out there for me.
I may be young but this feeling i have is something i cannot get rid of. I've been feeling this way since i was 15, and i may feel it for the rest of my life.

I'm sorry you feel like that. I'm 32 and I've always been shy and awkward around women; I also have an emotional disability that makes it hard to read people. I could not count the number of women I have had crushes or infatuations with, who didn't return it. Four years ago, I fell in love with a young woman over the Internet who seemed to like me. We shared a lot of interests, we were supposedly both shy and socially awkward and had been emotional abused by various people over the years. No, after two years of chatting online, I realized she was stringing me along. She had a very hard outer shell that was actually quite brittle; underneath she was explosive. I inadvertently wrote a comment to her in an e-mail that she disliked and when I didn't apologize immediately, she exploded at me and cut me off completely. I've been heart broken ever since and from time to time, say that that's it, I'm done, there can't be anyone for me, forget it, I'm done getting my heart put through the meat grinder of love. But I refuse to believe that. Everyone has another half. Your heart is always intact; it can take a lot. You may have pieces that are bruised but it is always whole. 24 is pretty young. Don't give up. You're a beautiful young woman, you will find someone, maybe when you least expect it. Best wishes to you.

See that's the problem. You think your life will be incomplete unless you find a partner. Whoever is telling you this are liars. You do NOT need a partner. You were not born on this planet to make someone else happy nor vice versa. You were born because God needed you for a special purpose. Whatever that special purpose may be is your business. The point is do NOT put a man before God, do NOT put a man before your family, do NOT put a man before your principles, do NOT put a man before your dream, do NOT put a man before your possessions, do NOT put a man before your freedom. You are an independent woman, you just need to search inside yourself and have the fortitude to tell the world, "take me or leave me."

When Robert says “maybe there is no other half”, it hit me real good.
I’m going to be 23 in February, and I haven’t really had a serious, months-long relationship yet (it’s all been casual) and I see people I graduated from high school and college getting either married, engaged, having a baby, or some kind of combination of that. And I’m over here like, “did I not get the memo”?

I’m the same, I turn 24 next year, and it makes me feel really out of the “norm” I think for some of us, we just won’t have that many relationships in our lifetime, idk I was writing to try and make you feel better and now I’m bummed lol.

The first-class acting is what made these scenes so emotional and real for many viewers. My personal favorite is Marie’s speech to the FBI agent, when she so movingly reveals her concerns for Robert’s safety.

Ray’s Journal made me think back to a time where I was ride to my parents in my childhood. I started crying which I haven’t done for many years now. I did something similar to what Ray did in his journal and my parents only deserve the best, not what I gave them. I love them so much.

Marie's heartbreak was palpable in that clip, especially when she told Debra she would not wish that on her. Those moments when it seemed Marie & Debra in fact did have some common ground seemed harder to come by, but oh when they did come...

That's just the way it is, I guess. When I watched the last episode of M*A*S*H 35 years ago, I didn't really cry until Hawk and B.J. were saying goodbye to each other. Now I start bawling even before the gang starts saying goodbye to each other.

Robert always thought that Marie loved Raymond more because he was the, “favorite”. In reality, Marie fawned over Raymond more because she knew Robert was much stronger and self-sufficient. Therefore, he didn’t need to be babied like Raymond did.

The hitting part always gets me upset for some reason. Frank tells us it's just the way it was, but you know at that time everyone was a selfish @$$. Some of us actually know from that experience first hand and never learn how to forgive because of that.

voltz15 So very sorry you endured abuse! 😢 I hope that you have been able to participate in some type of therapy (either individual or group) at some point, just to work through things with those who understand. I totally get it is very hard to forgive. I know from past experience, it is helpful to remind oneself that the root of the problem was something on their part, not on me. Also, it is highly beneficial and healing, if a person can decide they are not going to let the abuse eat at them anymore. These are, in their ways, tremendous steps toward healing and getting over the pain and the dominance it once had over one's life. Hope this helps in any way.

One thing that gets me about the scene is Robert’s reaction. He’s a police officer and had no doubt come across situations dealing with abuse.

Plus, he & Marie grew up & raised children at a time when that was basically considered normal parenting. It was wrong then as it is now, but sometimes there is truth to someone being "products of their time".
Times change, philosophies change & hopefully, you grow & adapt. Nowadays, what they did would be thought of as either helicopter parenting, at best or child abuse, at worst. Cycles can be broken.

I used to be so angry at my mother. We got hit, but not out meanness, it was meant to teach us. One day when I was adult I had another disagreement with my mother and I really thought about. I had a choice, I could cut her out of my life or learn to live with who she was. I chose the latter and I'm glad I did. She mellowed when she became a grandmother and great-grandmother. She's gone and I miss her every damn day.
