I´m High handicap and switched to SL (Single Length) clubs Cobra F8 and was amazed by my new consistency in all iron swings. Perfect concept for me, one swing for all irons!
Best reviewer i've found, to the point and talks exclusively about the forgiveness and function. So many other reviewers crap on about looks and sounds of clubs. This guy is a really good reviewer! Nice job!!
Video is flawed inaccurate as the Cleveland Launcher HB irons are more forgiving and much easier to hit than any of the irons in the video 🏌🏾♀️ and it's not as if they are very expensive like the PXG SGI irons.
Thanks James. For me it came down to the JPX 900 and the Titleist AP1. It was a tough decision but I bought the AP1’s. Both are great clubs. The trajectory and forgiveness of the 4 and 5 irons really stood out, for me.
I'm a senior golfer with a nine handicap. Without question the best thing I ever did for my golf game was getting fitted for new irons in early 2018. The company I chose was Mizuno and after a number of fitting sessions it came down to the forged or the " Hot Metal ". The ball we used was my play ball the Pro-V1 ,,, I really lost count of the number of balls I hit with both clubs, both the forged and the Hot Metal were fitted with the shaft of my choice ,,UST Mamiya Recoil 65's. The bottom line, I honestly couldn't feel any difference whatsoever in the two irons. The fitter recommended ( and rightly so ) that we should go with the Hot Metal as they were more forgiving than the forged. Absolutely beautiful irons, solid distance and excellent feel.
I got a set of Cobra F8s (the standard length ones) earlier this year and I absolutely love them. I don't think I would recommend them for links golf, though, because they do tend to get the ball really high into the air. On the parkland courses I usually play, it is perfect, since it allows me to hit them over trees (something I was never able to do confidently with my old irons) and to have them stop quickly on the greens even though I don't put a massive amount of spin on the ball.
Just ordered after custom fit, preferred to hot metal and t/m mcgb, went straighter, longer, faster and super consistent and felt buttery smooth. Amazing clubs for me!
Great review will be testing AP1 next week. Currently playing Callaway x series. As a senior high handicapper I'm looking for forgiveness, distance and feel, plus decent looking! Can't wait for your final test!
Great review James. And congratulations on the first reviewer that has brought price on to the agenda. I'm new to your channel, but loving what I've seen already! 😀👍🏌️
Nice quick informative review; I play the 718’s & agree that they’re a top tier iron. Titleist, Ping & Mizuno will always produce well engineered club, year to year. Years ago I played Wilson Staff’s, which were good forged irons - it’s nice to see them climbing up the charts. PXG are too expensive for the average guy, especially when you have companies who produce quality products at an affordable price, like I mentioned above...
This was great, thanks, been searching for "golf club comparison chart" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Aanraaster Particular Authority - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )? It is an awesome one of a kind guide for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method without the headache. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my buddy got great success with it.
Cleveland Launcher HB irons are more forgiving and easy to hit than any of the irons on that list 👌🏾 And backed up by the amount of people commenting on them in the comments 🏌🏾♀️
I’m a 14.6 handicap. I’m on my first set of clubs that I got fitted for and my second set overall since I started golfing 4 years ago. I ended up with the srixon 585 but the ap1s and ap3 made it a tough decision.
James, Loved the video!! went and got fitted today testing ping g400, calloway rogue, mizuno 919 hot metal and the AP1 Hit the AP1 most consistently, felt great and pro said he said it would be perfect irons for me based on my testing I kept an open miond going in but honestly was thinking mizuno but AP1 made me a believer looking forward to trying them when they come in I am a high handicapper but stand by for the future development :)...my first set of fitted clubs
What would be a club comparable to the Taylormade SIM but in 2017/2018. In other words if I like and was comfortable with the SIM but can’t afford it, what is an older (more affordable) club set I can purchase?
I have tried the rogue irons. They are fantastic as well but I liked the feel of the mizunos better. The new 919 hot metals look amazing as well. Go test them out to see what you consider necessary for your golf game.
My fitter put me through the paces with Callaway Rogue, Taylor Made M4, and Mizuno 900-JPX. And the winner was........ ...Mizuno. After some tweaking with length, lie, and weight, I was clustering the 6 iron with a pleasant draw in a 10-yard diameter circle at 170-ish yards. Can't wait until they arrive next week for finishing.
@@JamesRobinsonGolf This video re-appeared in my feed today. As a followup: those irons (and perhaps my swing improving in concert) brought me from a 16 to playing off 7, and broke par for a round for the first time in my life (at age 47 then) with a 1-under 71. Your content has remained top-tier in quality - good on you!
I really like the AP1's .. Was looking at buying a set but they do not offer irons customize-able to an upright 3 or 4 degrees lie angle - and a longer shaft length (+1.5 to +2.0 inches) option.. Looks like they only offer a max 2 degree upright. That is not enough for me and is totally unfortunate.. Thankfully many other companies offer the ability to customize irons the way I need them. ... but I reeeally wanted a set of AP1's!!!
James, thanks for the excellent advice.. But after doing some further research it looks like you CAN order the Titleist AP1 with a lie angle of up to +4 and shaft length up to +1.5.. I feel like a dummy for sending you some bad info. Anyway, that puts the AP1 at the top of my list .. I still need to hit them and see how I like them .. The other two irons that are on my list Taylormade M4 and Mizo JPX 900 Hot Metal. We'll so who wins. Thanks to you for all your videos and info to help me decide.
I am +1" and 4 degrees upright. You need quality forged irons to get more than 2 degrees upright without it changing the character of the club head. Some cast irons will crack and cause all kinds of trouble.
Thanks Jeff for the info.. I really need to get fitted.. I did some research/experimenting on my own and with a bit of a longer iron (about +1.25 "), I think I can get away with a 2 degree upright. I think I am going to get fitted to be sure.
I think we are entering a new era that blurs the lines for irons. Pros using AP 1/3, G400, P790 etc. I'm using Adams Super S at the moment, and, now that I know the extra distances and carry 5 (!) wedges I find them as easy to manipulate as any set plus height without ballooning. Came from S56 which were also great.
Looking to get a new set of irons. I’m around an 8-10 handicap. If I break 80 I’m pretty pleased... What do you guys suggest if I’m not looking to break the bank? I wouldn’t even mind buying slightly used/a year or two old... Any feedback from whoever is reading this I’d appreciate it!
If you like the JPX hot metal and can hit it consistently, I would strongly recommend trying the MP18 MMC. It is so easy to hit and the feel is massively better than the JPX. Ignore the marketing about this being a better players club, it is just a very good club, probably more traditionally lofted than others so not ideal if all you want is distance. It may just be me but I think the irons released this year look much nicer than last year (of course I bought a new set last year so no new stuff for me for a while)
Very helpful video James , just started playing again and still love my Cleveland VAS I bought 27 years ago for forgiveness!!!!! However James , do you think I would benefit from newer technology and get some new irons??
Sheesh, James. For many of us, the newest Titleist and Mizuno irons are no more affordable than PXG! How about a video for those of us on a fixed income or with family. You know, the Wilson, Cobra, Tour Edge crowd--or (shudder) a video on the best used game improvement irons. For example, you can get a complete set of very forgiving 2015 Cobra Max irons, in fine fiddle, for less than a third of what you'd pay for most of the irons in this video.
Yes, but he's talking about new irons. I'm with you: there are plenty of quality, name-brand irons available, in fine shape, for a fraction of their cost new. And irons haven't improved that much over the years. I have a set of Ping G5s and a set of Callaway Steelhead X-14s (with OEM Rifle shafts), and I paid well-less than $200 for each set--this year. @@raylugo9900
He probably doesn’t have the time or the want to go over all the cheap clubs. Most people who can afford what it takes to play a round of golf at most courses will want a good name brand set of clubs.
Hi Patrick, after much research, reviewing, trying all sorts of clubs, I chose the new Cleveland HB Launcher irons with the Miazaki graphite shafts in senior flex. If you just want to hit the ball high and straight with ease, and don't care what they look like, I suggest you give em a try. Very forgiving, consistent, and just plain fun to game these irons.
Really liked this video as I think about picking up new irons. Quick Question for the community: I'm a high handicapper currently playing 712 AP1s. I like them a lot, but this season I'm really focusing on taking the next step and improving with lots of lessons and hopefully playing a lot more than I have in the past. If I pick up a new set of 718s, should I stick with the AP1s where I'm probably most sensibly fitted or try to move into AP3s which is probably what I would want to do if I get the improvement I'm really looking for? Thanks!
Great review James. I currently hit the TM Burner 2.0 irons and I'm looking to buy a new set.I've hit the Calloway Rogue, Ping G400 (but not the G700), the AP1, and the M4. I have narrowed my choices down to the AP1 and the M4, but now thinking I should hit the G700 (don't want to complicate thins too much). What do you see as the biggest difference between the M4 and the AP1?
I’m in Australia and I’ve just brought pfg clubs over callaway a quarter of the price and I felt a lot better consistency compared to callaway would love to see u give them a try
I purchased the Mizuno JPX 900 Forged a couple of months ago. I absolutely love them. My fitter was trying to put me into the hot metal but I decided on the Forged. Great review.
Have to wonder why a Wilson club would be listed, I have never seen Wilson clubs since taking up the game several years ago. Does anyone aspire to Wilson ownership? Have to think the new Callaway Rogues would place on this short list.
I'm sure you are correct, I just don't see them here in the states. I got a new set of AP1 716 on close-out and an very pleased with them. Oh and by the way, pronounce "chrome moly" correctly. I did a google search on Wilson and there're some good articles. Wilson was a premium brand in USA in the 1980's and 90's when I golfed previously. Apparently they lost their way and damaged their reputation by selling lousy box sets at Walmart. They have reorganized since then and have had good success in the UK and Euro markets, but to date, they are not popular in the USA. I know they look sharp and are available locally. These things aren't rocket science, as a mechanical engineer, I'm certain the Wilson has highly qualified people designing great products.
Most forgiving iron, is whatever I can drop a ball wherever I want. To be honest depends on what u like. If u don't like the look u ain't gonna hit well, if not just drink a few beers.
Lol I’d argue that loving the look of your clubs is actually pretty dam important. Stepping up to a ball and having pride and lust for your clubs def increases your confidence
I cant hit fat soled irons so my CB 710 irons staying in bag great point about PXG bonkers money also I like the manufacturers making slight cut in hosel for easy bending lie angle and loft 👍😉
Thank you for your reviews. My question is, Im about to get fitted and buy my first ever new set of clubs. Im leaning towatd TM M6 Driver thru Lob wedge. All graphite. I shoot about 100 for a round. Just tetired im 57. Your thoughts on my leaning toward Taylormade M6? Thank you so much. ⛳
First video i have watched on your channel. Noticed your backswing - is your backswing like this to prevent and over the top swing? I have just started back golf after 10 years or so and I'm having trouble with a looping at the top and coming across so I'm noticing people's swings more than ever lol. Nice video subbed.
Hey Lee thanks for reaching out. I’ve had back issues for a while and to be honest it’s more of a result of that. But if you tried picking it up a little steeper then dropping it more inside the ball that may help you? Thanks for watching. ⛳️🔥🎥👍🏼
James Robinson Golf so basically over exaggerating what I already have in reverse? I have seen a great drill I'm going to try using an alignment rod in the ground at a similar angle as my club, the rod has a swimming woggle/noodle over it to protect the club and rod. The aim being to swing under the rod..
How does one golf club hit consistent good shots every time and another not (being hit by same player)? Just tell me how that happens from a technical or design point of view. I'd love to know. I understand that people will prefer one club from another but I do not accept the club can become a perfect ball striking machine all on its own. Genuine question.
Hey Dan! It can be down to a number of factors! However the reality is that when we test clubs we’re looking more at what happens with the “bad shots” how forgiving are they, can we control trajectory and shape them if need be etc etc. With some clubs I find the distances inconsistent because of the fluctuations in spin rate when the strike location changes ever so slightly. Does that make sense? Thanks for watching and commenting mate. ⛳️👍🏼🔥🎥
James Robinson Golf I like the caveat at the end staying it's your personal opinion which is a saving grace.i just feel RUclips testers go overboard with picking one club out of millions on the market not to mention shaft options, and stating that one club is better than the rest when in reality the margins are miniscule in most cases among top manufactures. It can only be personal choice that decides. Therefore I believe it's ok to pick a top five or ten but not order them further. Just say truthfully that these five are my choices for obvious reasons , consistency etc go and try them for yourself. It may or may not help.
Dan Carney you nailed it Dan. However my channel like most is based around opinion. Everyone’s differs I’m just offering mine to the masses. Thanks for watching and commenting ⛳️👍🏼🎥 any questions on other videos make sure to comment.
Wow, another great and informative golf equipment video. Just like my still favorite golf RUclips (Mark Crossfield) use to do :-) - I'm looking at the Ping G700 or the AP1's for my next set.
@@JamesRobinsonGolf Thanks James. I'm sure you're aware but PXG just recently discounted their cast line 0211 pretty heavily. Idk if you have anything planned for those irons but I know a number of people who are now ordering sets (without really knowing where they fall in the hierarchy of available options) . For whatever reason there's a massive void in reviews for the PXGs.
James, great videos mate keep going. Surprised you've not put in Taylormade P790. is that because you did not rate them in your top 5 or will there be another category. Cheers.
Yes mate I wouldn’t really class them as a “game improvement” iron. Or for high handicaps, they are a fantastic golf club for mid/low handicaps and are forgiving for that level if that makes sense? Thanks for the support 😊⛳️🎥
If you want to help your game, use super improvement clubs. I adore my Ping hacker clubs. My playing buddies use blades, but their blades can't beat my hacker clubs.
HB Launcher. If you don't have time to practice and just want to go out and play. HB Launcher are the easiest to hit. No shaft lean . No pinching the ball. Just sweep them and they do the work for you. They look awful and are very amaturish but they are the easiest club to hit.

Re: Mizuno irons. Chromoly has been around a LONG time, particularly in lower end bike frames...but maybe not used in for iron heads?
I agree. I use to have a Chromoy frame bike in midle 90's. It was verry strong and light at the same time.
Low end of the quality bikes today as compared to carbon Ti or Aluminum . But it was Top end of bikes in the 90's and probably the easiest to repair.

Chrome molly isn’t a new compound axle companies have been using it for a long time
How do u like Callaway rouges?
Titleist AP1 run about $800 I believe that is a little high for most golfers to spend for Clubs. But yes they look great.
Titleist 718 ap1 s great irons never hit the ball so consistently well
Great clubs aren’t they Graeme!!!
did you do another video after? end of year on other clubs?
Fantastic James, keep up the good work!
Have you or are you going to test Cleveland irons
They won’t get back to me mate.
The only reason I ask, I was fitted for some the other week and it was full club length difference to my clubs
No problem thanks for getting back to me I still enjoy watching your videos they are never dull 👍
own that ap1 and loved it very much
Did you look at anything else out of interest Yollie? Thanks for watching. Hope your enjoying my channel ⛳️🎥👍🏼
please do a part 2 with srixons rogue and others that came out.
Just found your page have you reviewed the Cobra F-MAX complete set?
Great videos mate! Short and to the point. Have you tried the Bombtech Irons?
Not heard of them Rob? Thanks though! I’ll take a look!

Callaway Rogue??
the c300 is sold out at the moment...must be a hot set of irons
Hot metal was love at first strike for me.
Have to wonder why a Wilson club would be listed, I have never seen Wilson clubs since taking up the game several years ago. Does anyone aspire to Wilson ownership? Have to think the new Callaway Rogues would place on this short list.
Listed because they’re good to hit. Have you tried them Jay? Plenty of people are enjoying them. Great clubs for the price.
Cheers ⛳️👍🏼
Chromalloy has been around for ages. They used to make BMX bike frames out of it in the 80’s.
Andre Grant they still do make the best BMX bikes out of 4130 chromoly. It's a legit metal. It had stood the test of time.
Andre Grant chromoly*
Cook Bros ftw... God that was so long ago....
Is PXG SGI the most forgiveness club in these 5 models? Don't consider the higher price.
Cleveland Launcher HB irons are probably just as forgiving and easier to hit.
Wilson Staff C300 are $600 but the D300 are only $350 on closeout special. I wonder what the difference is.....
Another great vlog 👏👏
The JPX didn't make the list for its price, but you put titleist 718s as #1...
WOW!!! do you have a flat swing. I use Titleist AP 3 and like them. When you hit them good there super solid miss hit them and there not to bad.
Yes mate I do. Spinal surgery put paye to an aesthetic swing. Great clubs. Thanks for watching!
Have you tried the Cleveland HB launcher irons?
I cant hit fat soled irons so my CB 710 irons staying in bag great point about PXG bonkers money also I like the manufacturers making slight cut in hosel for easy bending lie angle and loft 👍😉
Thank you for your reviews. My question is, Im about to get fitted and buy my first ever new set of clubs. Im leaning towatd TM M6 Driver thru Lob wedge. All graphite. I shoot about 100 for a round. Just tetired im 57. Your thoughts on my leaning toward Taylormade M6? Thank you so much. ⛳
Hi James, really Enjoyed your Game improvement irons review....Would love to see you Review Cobra One Length Max
Cheers Wayne! My dad uses those so I’ll see if I can get them off him!
That already sounds encouraging
5 Ping g700
4 Wilson c300
3 mizuno box 900 hot metal
2 Taylormade M4
1 Titleist Ap1
Great video!first to view and post!
Thanks!!! Glad you enjoyed it
I bought a used set of irons Mizuno... Fantastic clubs for$165 with driver
Where would PXG have been?
Middle of the pack
@@JamesRobinsonGolf Thanks James. I'm sure you're aware but PXG just recently discounted their cast line 0211 pretty heavily. Idk if you have anything planned for those irons but I know a number of people who are now ordering sets (without really knowing where they fall in the hierarchy of available options) . For whatever reason there's a massive void in reviews for the PXGs.
M4 over mizuno hot metal??
James, great videos mate keep going. Surprised you've not put in Taylormade P790. is that because you did not rate them in your top 5 or will there be another category. Cheers.
Yes mate I wouldn’t really class them as a “game improvement” iron. Or for high handicaps, they are a fantastic golf club for mid/low handicaps and are forgiving for that level if that makes sense? Thanks for the support 😊⛳️🎥
Nike slingshot hl cheap n older but boy they work for me
Cleveland launcher hb irons best ever forgiving irons
James, you have a very wristy swing ( the dreaded hinged wrist move). My coach would kill me for that.
Watch a more current video
If you want to help your game, use super improvement clubs. I adore my Ping hacker clubs. My playing buddies use blades, but their blades can't beat my hacker clubs.
HB Launcher. If you don't have time to practice and just want to go out and play. HB Launcher are the easiest to hit. No shaft lean . No pinching the ball. Just sweep them and they do the work for you. They look awful and are very amaturish but they are the easiest club to hit.
Srixon 565..... Should have been in here
I like club reviews
No rogue x....?????????
You watch to the end Aaron? Not had chance to get hold of them yet.
I caught the comment about the end of 2018 review coming. Those ping I500s in another review are too sexy to pass up tho. I want them for my bag
Ben Hogan GS Edge are the best ever I have 3 sets flex 4
,nice review
Thanks mark!!! Glad your enjoying the content!
Once they started reducing the offset....
This is just superb, been searching for "what is the best cheap set of golf clubs?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Aanraaster Particular Authority - (just google it )?
It is an awesome one off product for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method minus the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got cool results with it.
@@ariasilver9546 dont care hah
Where is BombTech?
Not been lucky enough to try any, if you want to send some to demo I’ll be happy to give them a go? 👍🏼🎥⛳️
James Robinson Golf let’s hook you up! Message team@bombtechgolf.com
Will do ⛳️👍🏼🔥🎥
Bomtechgolf I'd be happy to give a demo set a try as well!
will sott boom!!
James, can I just say not everyone is as rich as you and can afford irons over 300 400 pounds, its ridiculous I could never get close to affording this.
No problem buddy. But there are plenty of people who can. I also do videos on budget clubs? So feel like I cover all bases pretty well.
it's Gordon Ramsey of the golfing world! :-)
all that's missing is, these clubs are F#*%&'#+*g brilliant or for F*'#&ks sake go and buy these F*'#&%king clubs today!
A titleist pro, of course titleist came first...
No Callaway?????!!!!!!
I'll stay with my Callaway
More like TaylorMade P790 irons are number 1.
Nice opinion Jake!
the PXG are ridiculously priced and look like component clubheads from the early 2000's
Chromoly isnt a new substance.......they were making top of the line BMXs out of it back in the 80s
Srixon
Which ones Karl? ⛳️👍🏼
