- This is another video in my series “ Walks in Dorset” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the town of Wareham which is located 8 miles to the South West of Poole in Dorset.
My 5 mile circular route is in two parts. The first part sees me walking around the old perimeter Saxon wall of the town before I head out, in the second part, to enjoy a meander along the banks of the River Frome.
After parking my car at one of the central car parks in Howards Lane (£2.80 for 4 hours) and started my walk on the North East section of the old wall / bank - an area known as “The Bowling Green” and headed Westwards (along the top of the wall) to firstly have a look at St Martins' Church (one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town & indeed is believed to be the most complete example of an Anglo Saxon church in Dorset).
I continue Westwards with super view of the River Piddle & it's floodplain to the North before heading South along the “Bloody Bank” towards the old town pound. My walk then takes me to the historic Wareham Quay & South bridge - and my first sight of the River Frome.
My exploration of Wareham finishes with a look at the magnificent Priory church of Lady St Mary.
Part two of my walk commences along the River Frome (following one of the Poole Harbour Trails). This was a really pretty walk along the bank with so much wildlife to look out for as well as some impressive boats moored up on the river.
I pass by the old gravel pits - now deep lakes - at Bestwall Park and after saying farewell to the River Frome, I soon join up with the River Piddle (although it is hidden by reeds) to start my return leg back to the town.
The walk finished with light refreshments at the Quay Inn to the South of the town.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX IMPORTANT NOTE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX I am sorry about the quality of the image stabilization on the video, which is not that great at times. I was using a Gopro 10 camera for the second time (they had only recently been available to buy) and all users of the camera were experiencing issues & problems with the stabilization when either standing still or moving slowly! A Firmware update has since been provided by Gopro and I am pleased to say that the issue has now been resolved. I hope that it does not spoil your enjoyment of the video.

Thank you Dave and Logan. Very informative and extremely interesting. We are moving to Stoborough shortly and this was just what we needed.
Thank you x
Thank you Mark. I hope that your move goes smoothly.
When I was flying out of Portland in Wessex mark fives of the RN. We had a piddle tube in the back cabin that emptied into the outside air. My aim of one day using it over The Piddle Valley, came in 1978! And I did!
Goodness me!
A great place to spend a few hours ,far from the maddening crowds , when spending six weeks school holidays , with my grandparents ,happy days .
It is a lot to explore around the area for sure!
Amazing Video.
I'm your fan.
Thanks and indeed thank you for watching.
That brought back lovely memories of camping at Reg Cliff, must be back in the 80's. Loved walking the river from the site to get bread and milk. Thank you both. Take care.
Thank you Christine. :)
Great video, lovely and peaceful. Wareham has become my favourite place to get away to for a few days. I live not too far away in Sussex and I just love going to Wareham and dawdling along the Frome with my flask and sandwiches. I'm going next week and you've given me ideas for a few things to look at which I hadn't noticed before. Thankyou
Thanks Adrian. So much history to Wareham - a fascinating town to explore for sure. Hope you get to enjoy some more great walks there in the future. Thanks for watching.
Another delightful walk the countryside off England
Thank you Keith.
I went to Wareham many moons ago and walked the walls. Also have walked the Purbeck Way (?) from Corfe to Wareham. That first church was a bit special!! I loved the Lawrence memorial and I would definitely have given it house space! Nice to see Logan having such fun towards the end. Thank you for another very interesting and well researched video. I really enjoy your films.
Thanks Jean. Yes, that effigy of T E Lawrence was certainly impressive for sure.
Catching up on some of your walks, Dave. Most enjoyable, especially as Jackie and I cruised up to Wareham from Poole earlier this year.
Thanks Bernie. I imagine cruising around there was a lot of fun!
@@DaveFord It certainly was!!
Thanks Dave and Logan for an enjoyable walk. Lovely old town Wareham.
Thanks Mike & indeed thank you for watching.
Bravo! Loved my visit to Wareham in 2014 and hope to return.
I hope that you have a great time when you visit again!
Thank you Dave and Logan for another great video.
Thanks Colin. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks Dave and Logan - enjoyable video in a terrific area! My wife and I watch on RUclips from Melbourne, Australia and always enjoy your channel. Nice to see you 'pop up' on Facebook too so I left a comment. Seriously thinking of returning to the UK to live and your channel is feeding that urge. Cheers, Keith
Thanks Keith. I hope that you enjoy the future videos in the series. Thank you both for watching.
Interesting point about the River Piddle - It's also known as the River Puddle, hence the names of villages along it ... Tolpuddle, Affpuddle, Bryantspuddle, etc. However, there are also Piddlehinton and Piddletrenthide.
I did read a story (I don't know if it true or not) that some of the names were changed from "Piddle" to "Puddle" because Queen Victoria was visiting this area as a young girl, and the locals thought that the word "piddle" might have been slightly offensive, so they changed the names to "puddle."!
Thanks Dave and of course, Logan. I’ve been to Wareham once or twice in my life and although it’s still possible to drive through, it’s much quicker to use the bypass. My most memorable visit was on a lovely summers day aboard a boat from Poole quay. As you said, there is a market at the quay on Saturdays. Indeed, the day I visited, there was indeed, such a market running.. what I didn’t know was the bank which runs alongside the river. It looked delightful and of course, the south bridge is a joy to behold.
We’re off to Ireland next weekend for a short holiday, so the next video may well have an Irish flavour to it.
I attempted to film a walk along the Itchen Way into Winchester from the north, but it so uninteresting, that I haven’t done anything with it
I hope you have an enjoyable & safe trip to Ireland Lionel.
Another great walk, Dave. I really look forward to them
Thank you Roger.
This is a really excellent film 👍 I visited Wareham last month (November, 2022) and this is like being there, walking around. I only stopped for about 2 hours, from a train journey, Weymouth to Poole, day trip. I made sure I visited the famous church, St Martin on the Walls. Therefore, this is my favourite part of this film; it really captures the eeriness of entering the little Saxon church, with the Lawrence effigy / sculpture in the distance.
But, the quay and the River Frome is really excellent, too.
Thank you Francis. There is certainly plenty to explore around Wareham - a super place to visit for sure. Thanks for watching.
A very enjoyable and informative video. Thank you both for sharing. ❤️
Thank you. It is a fascinating town to visit and the river walk is very pretty.
What a great walk. We will follow in your footsteps this summer. Lovely mix of history and wildlife so thank you for making the film 😊
Thank you. I hope that you have great weather for your walk later on this year. Thanks for watching.
Very interesting as I'm visting Wareham tomorrow. Corfe Castle is fascinating, but I see Wareham gives it a run for it's money. A town wall, museum and a beautiful Saxon church. Where will I begin?
I hope that you have an enjoyable visit .... and that the weather is good for you!
The performance platform would have been perfect for Hyacinth Buckets water side supper with riparian entertainments.
Yes Will - I can just picture that scene!
I know I have come to the party late but are there any plans to visit Dorset again? I am not sure which county you are based in or how practicable it is for you. Cheers for another great journey.
There will be many more videos of "Walks in Dorset" on the channel during 2024 (including a new one tomorrow!).
At 3:10 I grew up just the other side of the hedge! I got married in lady St Mary's.
What a lovely town to grow up in Jon and indeed such a splendid church for your wedding. Thanks for watching.
@@DaveFord we say frome with the o like oh!
@@DaveFord was st martins open or did you have to get the key?
@@foreversingle1975 St Martins was open when I filmed
When was that? I grew up in Northmoor, went to the Purbeck just after it had opened. Worked on the Westminster Industrial Estate. My sister was married at Lady St.Mary's and both my parents are buried there.
