  • Dear Friends here a few tools I love very much:
Before heading to buy somewhere, go first to www.liuteriashop.com and see if you can find what you are looking for. My small brass arching planes I got from Monica and Antonio's liuteriashop.com
They are just 100 meters from my workshop.
The small green KUNZ 100 plane, you can find it now here:
    www.dictum.com/it/pialle-kunz...
Here in a revised brass version made in Italy:
    www.liuteriashop.com/it/attre...
and here is the blade; specify that you want the flat one (in Italian "piatta")
    www.liuteriashop.com/it/attre...
My knifes are from Pfeil. The steel is not very hard; but for a good knife I think it is better when it is not too hard, since you don't want to see the thin part chipping away all the time when you cut a curve. Right? Yes or Yes?
    I got mine from Dictum.com
    the small round plane:
    www.liuteriashop.com/en/tools...
    the blade is sold separately:
    www.liuteriashop.com/en/tools...
    blade round with teeth:
    www.liuteriashop.com/en/tools...
My big plane to joint is a No.: 7 from Stanley with a Japanese blade from Samurai.
    amzn.to/3pVs9so
And the small tool to take out the wood from the top and the back while cutting the channel for the purfling I made myself out of a small flat file. I had the idea after I have broken one by using it as a screwdriver.......😳
    Enjoy and have fun.
    All the best from Cremona
    Edgar

I've a friend who teaches the art of hand tools. His name is Rob Cosman, and he lives in New Brunswick, Canada. One of the core skills is learning how to freehand sharpen a handplane in under 30 seconds to such a degree that the plane will take a shaving in the range of 0.0005 inch ( 0.0127 mm). It's a highly useful skill because of the level of precision possible. It's important to be able to sharpen and return to work in the shortest possible time. That sharpening takes under 30 seconds, which means one returns to work in under one minute. In addition, a blade sharpened to this level leaves a surface no sandpaper can begin to match.

      I am impressed!
I need much longer to sharpen my tool on my Japanese sharpening stones and fresh cremonese tub water!
      😅
Anyhow all the best to you and your sharp friend Rob!

@@EdgarRuss If you look up Rob Cosman on you tube you can learn how to sharpen in this way. He also uses Shapton Japanese sharpening stones.

Hi Edgar, A video on sharpening tools would be valuable. For the maker, sharpening tools is kind of like intonation for players - always wondering if a tool is sharp enough or if a note is perfectly pitched.

Thank you, I enjoy your videos. I would very much appreciate a discussion of Belgian vs French cello bridges. I often see them on cellos that, to me, don't appear to be the correct match. I am not a professional luthier. But I was mentored by a luthier friend. I currently live in Ecuador and volunteer as a cello teacher. I often must work on my student's cellos because there are no luthiers nearby. The cellos are very poor quality, but all that are available within their budgets. Anything I can learn to help them is appreciated.

Thank you for all of the good information and sharing your knowledge. Would you share which "standards" of violin making you personally disagree with and which ones you feel are very important. I have restored for almost 20 years and am finally getting started on building a violin. I know that makers all have different beliefs and methods. Your video on the secret of Italian arching was very interesting!

    Hi Edgar, Happy New Year!
If you ask for suggestions for a new video: I'd find it quite interesting to see you carving a scroll! (Maybe in fast motion?)
And another suggestion: I assume that you do not that much retouching work in your workshop, but I currently had an epic fail on retouching the damaged varnish under the bridge feet - unfortunately the bridge was on a wrong place when the violin was placed in the sun, and the varnish was squeezed away. Fortunately it was a cheap chinese factory instrument, but I was absolutely unable to get proper colour matching and -blending and finally I had to revarnish the whole top :-)

      Great idea, Johannes!
I will work on it immediately after The NAMM Show which is next week from 18th to 22nd of January 2021
See you there. Maybe I will care on a scroll live just for you.
      OK?

I find I become attached to particular tools, and even though another tool could be used I am not happy unless I have this particular one which feels right in my hand. It’s a craftsman thing. I enjoy all your videos, what about one on the subject of wolf tones? What are they, why do they happen, are they a sign of a bad instrument? Thank you again for the videos and stay safe in these troubled times.👍👍👍

      This would be very interesting
I heard wolf tones are bad on Violins and desired on Cellos
      Idk about the Viola

    • @johannesbachlein149

@@zuccacello3362 I have a wolf tone on my viola on the empty "A" and it's so extremely annoying... It goes away when I squeeze the neck with my thumb but this is quite unhealthy. Edgar proposed to bring some weight at the scroll, which indeed works well, but due to the long lever makes viola playing even more physical challenging, so dispensed the weights. There are other methods to get rid of the wolf but none of them worked well.

    • @zuccacello3362

@@johannesbachlein149 is it a bad one?
I have one on my Cello on F# (all strings)
Usually if I loosely ad a wolfkiller on the G string it is gone but it muffles a little bit my G of D-String.
I now switched to a wolf modulator to not kill the wolf but switch it between F and F# maybe this could be a possibility?
Or small weight on the lower „belly“ of the viola where the wolftone resonates most?
I have no idea about Viola except that they sound awesome

Very nice! I agree on the big jointer plane. I do spend hours joining still, but ever since I bought a long plane, it has just been so much more precise!
I have a question about knives, actually. I have one which I use for everything and like very much, but the blade is long, so when I do purfling channels, I'm putting pressure on the blade, not the handle, and my finger tips don't like that very much. I also think the blade is a little thick for purfling, and cutting in the maple gets really tedious.
What knife could you recommend for cutting purfling grooves? This is something I postpone as long as possible because I don't like doing it, so if I could find a better tool for it and enjoy it more, that would just be great!
    Best regards, Tobias

Hello Edgar, i have some questions:
    - I wonder if after starting building violins you ever came back to guitars(or if you would like to at some point)?
I would like to build guitars but i'm thinking about studying bow instruments since i can't find good quality guitar studies that i can afford.Would you recommend it, considering i've never even hold a violin? My main interest are archtop guitars which share a few things with bow instruments.
Do you know if there are plucked instrument studies in the cremona lutherie school? I've seen it in the website, but i only see information for the admisions regarding bow instruments.
And last thing... considering the huge amount of information that can be found in the internet currently, do you think school is "necessary" to learn instrument building? I've seen that your apprentices all come from the cremona school, would you even consider "taking" someone that doesn't have formal studies(if they show some knowledge of course)?
Thank you very much for your time, and for your videos. Greetings from Barcelona.
