As far as plants that sting, you guys need to pick some okra if you want your arms cut up. I worked on a farm as a kid, and the first time I picked okra, no one told me they would make me itch. By the time we finished, my arms were bleeding from scratching.

    Suggestion maybe… We have found that leaving stem ends on tomato fruit can cause damage to other harvested tomatoes next to the stems in harvest baskets, buckets and display tubs. So if you have been seeing unexplained holes in harvested tomato fruit when you are putting them out for display, those stems left on might be the cause.
    What I am happy to see is that you all do not wait until your tomatoes are ripe before you harvest! : ) Yes, a ripe tomato is more pleasing to the eye, but they have a very short shelf life, especially when dealing with a huge harvest.

      Hello Luke!👋🏼 Can I pick your brain? I live in Minnesota & have been unsuccessful growing determinate & indeterminate cherry & regular tomatoes on my very small deck. I have always used a 5gallon pot with them & fertilize with Miracle Grow-Flower & Veggie the soil is usually prepped with Osmocote-Granules. Can you recommend changes I need to make? Is there a source of information that would help with my specific situation? Thxs! I Hope you’re doing well!

    • @theveggieboys
      @theveggieboys  Год назад +17

      They’re doing ok. We had some trouble with them due to the intense heat, but hopefully we will be able to harvest some cabbage. Thanks for stopping by! Love your content.

    • @djcbanks
      @djcbanks Год назад +3

      I’m not Luke, but I may be able to help. What specific problems are you having?
      From the get go, a lot of miracle grow fertilizers are high in nitrogen content which will give you lots of leaves and not the fruits you are looking for. Miracle grow does make a fertilizer specifically for tomatoes so if you going to use that brand, that’s a better option for you to pick. A good 10-10-10 (N-P-K) fertilizer will do well for tomatoes. I generally like to fertilize with blood meal (nitrogen), bone meal (phosphorus) and a triple rock phosphate for long term release, and finally a little bit of ash (potash) for the potassium based of a simple soil test I do to see what is deficient in the soil. I also add a little Epsom salts which is magnesium sulphate and the kind I use also has calcium in it. That will help prevent blossom end rot and is useful for cellular activity but also helps with fruit production. For fruiting vegetable you want more phosphorus than nitrogen or potassium because that specific macronutrient promotes root growth and fruit production. The saying goes, bigger roots, bigger fruits. Which leads me to the next thing, growing in a 5 gallon bucket might be hindering you. It is possible to do but you need great drainage so the the soil does not stay water logged. You also need to water deeply enough that it saturated the soil but doesn’t dissolve and wash away and nutrients you add. It’s important for soil to cycle between wet and somewhat dry because roots need oxygen and if you keep the roots too wet too long, you basically will suffocate the plant and kill it. For this I would recommend growing in 10 gallon fabric pots. It’s practically impossible to over water in them and the fabric pots promote air pruning of the roots and also allow air to get to the roots easier than a solid wall container like a bucket. You want to water deeply so the soil in the bottom of the container gets wet and as the top dries out, the roots will seek deeper soil where it’s moist. This promotes root growth which as I said earlier, bigger roots, bigger fruits. Tomatoes like warm weather but too hot can cause issues. That being said as long as night time temps are over 50°F and you get daytime temps into at least the 70’s then you should have good growth and fruit production. If your having issues with fruit setting on the vine, like the flowers are dying off, there could be nutrient issues, high heat, high humidity, etc but it could also be as simple as the fruit not getting pollinated. Tomatoes have a self pollinating flower so to help more fruit to set you can shake your plants and various branches with flowers on them to help the pollen fall inside the flower from the stamen to the stigma. Some people utilize a vibrating toothbrush to touch near the flower and vibrate it loose. It is quite effective but if you have a lot of plants, would be very time consuming. This shouldn’t even be necessary though. As long as your plants have access to wind, which should shake them just fine and even insects crawling on your plants will help pollinate them too.
      I can go on and on but I figure this is enough basic information for now, but if you let me know what specific issue you are having, I would gladly let you know what can be done to correct the issue. If you start out with good healthy soil, and water regularly, most issues won’t even present themselves. For the most part anyway. You’ll almost always get a blight if not early blight, then late blight but this can actually be avoided completely. To my surprise last year I had zero blight and zero disease on my tomato plants. They stayed healthy, green, lush and productive all the way till just before winter when I tore them out. That was last year and was the only year ever where I’ve had that happen. So yeah, there’s that.
      Anyway, I look forward to hearing back from you. Always willing to help out a fellow grander. Have a great day!

    I'm surprised you pick zucchini that big. Around here, the Mennonites pick them at 6-8 nches for their produce market. Its a good size for sauteing with onions and garlic. I guess folks must be making zucchini pizzas with those bigger ones. I figured Brian was pretty close to the same age as me. He's two years younger.
    Yep, you plant and reap, but the Lord brings the increase.
    Mr. Stripey's have been my favorites for decades, but they haven't done real well for me in the last few years. Our Mennonite greenhouse hasn't had them, and I've had to start them myself. Mine aren't as sturdy as theirs, and they haven't survived transplant. Your cabbages still got huge, in spite of the weeds.

    Could you discuss any adventures you have in raising certain types of veggies that you decided NOT to try again? (Like maybe crop failures) We we’re wondering why you don’t grow celery, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. Thanks, and great content as always!

      Florida gardener here, you have to choose crops that flourish in your zone. I grew up in Kalamazoo Michigan and it's called celery city for a reason. There are so many variations and what grows great in my neighbors garden might not do well in my garden. Plants can be tempermental. It takes time and experimenting to find what grows in your garden. Still learning here after 50 years of growing!

      What grows there might not do well where you live. For example in north Alabama we’ve been picking vine ripe tomatoes since June 28th. I can’t believe they are just now starting to pick in mid-August.

      I think they don't grow carrots because of the rocky soil

    More cheesy dad jokes please. In a previous video, several of you were picking on grandpa for showing up after all the hard work was done. Next time just call him blister, showes up after hard work.

    My wife and have been loving your videos for at least a year now and still catching up on your earlier ones. A debate or is it a question we have been tossing back and forth in our house is about your cattle. We watch you care for them every day but you have yet to talk about why you raise them? You obviously don’t have dairy cows. Are they for personal consumption? Do you sell your own beef at the market? Would live to know more about your herd.
