What’s going on, y’all?! Jason here at Cog Hill Farm, and we are finally starting a project we've been putting off for way too long - our Backyard Kitchen Garden, or as we call it, the Alabama Potager Garden! 🏡🌱
In this video, we’re planning and prepping the layout of the garden, fencing, and more. This is going to be one of our biggest projects since the pasture fencing! We're not stopping until it’s finished, no matter how long it takes.
We’ve made a few changes along the way, like including the greenhouse in the fenced area to keep the dogs out, and we’re thinking about bringing in some Silkies to roam around once the garden is done. Should we hatch more chickens or buy hens? Let us know what you think!
Plus, we’re adding a beautiful wrought iron gate at the front for a stunning entrance. We're also setting up raised beds and laying out posts for the fence. Stay tuned as we dive into this massive project and give you a tour of our progress!
Don’t forget to check out our latest fall collection of Cog Hill Farm gear on our website!

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
That was so sweet!
Good morning Cog Hill Family! What a project! Let's get going 😊😊
Forest Gump Said..I like that ..I like that ALOT
When you said the silkies couldn’t get up in that coop, if you do need it, you can build them a ramp going up in it. I can’t wait to see this area finished.
Blessings from TN❤
Love the Cog Hill family…..❤ Good morning all
Those gates are fabulous!!! So pretty! I love your plan!!! I can’t wait to see it! 💙💙💙
May I suggest y’all plant shade trees near the house? YES, more silkies! Woohoo! I’ve been waiting for this project! TYTY for sharing! ❤️❤️🙏❤️❤️
Planting one oak or maple tree in the center of each grass section on the side of the house would look amazing.
I think there's always room for more _TREES_
I wouldn’t plant trees that can fall on the structures.
Silkies are so pretty!
The best bantams we raised were Cochins. They are a lot like silkies. I called them my little puffballs. We also raised Japanese Blacktails, very pretty. Was just wondering how your propane will be delivered with all those gates.
My favorite bantams ❤
Good idea with the changed fence and gates plans. It will be beautiful
Good morning, can’t wait to see your finished prodigy garden, I just know it will be beautiful. ❤️ from Vancouver Island BC 🇨🇦
Good Morning 🌄 Yes, get Silkies🎉
Good morning Jason and Brooke, Holly looks so cute in her flower bandana!!! Good luck with the backyard!! Can't wait for it to be done!!❤❤
Good morning Cog Hill and Cog Squad. Happy Monday!
Absolutely Ms Brooke needs more chickens.
Good morning!😃
Don't cut off access to the propane tank.
I thought the same thing.
I was thinking the same thing! With that gate and wooden fence on the side, the propane man should be able to access the tank. They usually have a long enough hose.
Going to look good!!! Getting it done.
Morning from St Clair County. Hope you are enjoying the cooler temps! Norman and I are.
It's going to look amazing love it love it❤😊
How about an outdoor firepit area in that rocky area.
Great idea!
My husband’s motto was to “start out like you can hold out”. I think this is a subject that fits the motto.
Hi there Jason and Brooke and Baby's😊 love from Belgium ❤
Jason, time for your school assignment, go to the history of the Japanese. The castles, shrines that were built thousands of years ago, had their logs buried in ground were burnt. As far as you forgetting your tools? open your wallet (Jack Benny) and get a small box for tool to leave in the side by side (it does not come out) and buy tape, big screwdriver, fence tool, knife, and other small items so you don't waste all your time going back again. Get a carpenter apron, nothing fancy but pockets.
Good morning 🌞. Your gates are absolutely beautiful 😍. This area when completed is really going to be lovely. Wonderful to see Miss Pink 💖. OXOXO to you and all your family and animals ❣️
Aw, it ended. I wasn't expecting it to. I was ready for some fencing to go down. This is going to look so good. I suggest make sure to put in plenty of gates - at least one of every stretch. Remember how you wish you had put in more on the first pastures. The animal clips were adorable. Moody resting his big old head on Mildred was extra special.
Praying for everyone in this beautiful United States of
America.. GOD BLESS YA'LL ❤❤❤
So satisfying watching you two!! Brooke I am soooo glad you are back to your ole self, you are looking good and so glad you are feeling good too. Great idea's guys and can't wait to see it finished, it will be so beautiful with those iron gates! Have a great day! 🥰
I am excited about the new garden 🎉 it is going to be beautiful ❤️
Remember to leave room for the propane company to refill the propane tank.
Please more chickens
@@alaskaismyhome7594 LOL! 🐓🐓🐓

JUST LOVE WATCHING YOU PLAN. GODBLESS YOU ALL KEEP SAFE
Happy Monday Brooke, Jason and Cog Squad 🌸
Same to you!❤️
Good morning, Brooke and Jason. This is so exciting!!
3 silkies 😂 he knows you Brooke that means 13 in the end ( chicken math ) 😉 love it...& Y'all your friend in Houston Texas
😅😅😅yaaaaayyyyy!
You could try the no-till, garden-on-top method on that area behind the raised beds. That would begin the process of making usable soil on that spot. A la Ruth Stout. I bet you get a good 15 years out of those charred timbers, at the least.
@@stephanygates6491 I think so, too! This timbers will last a long time given how well they’ve been prepared.
I'm excited for you..haha❤❤❤
Good morning Cog Hill Family!❤
Good morning!☀️
Woop woop sooo exciting 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
🙌🙌🙌🙌
The weather here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, seems to be a lot like yours too😅
Are you singing the pig to sleep?
😂
Morning from Texas ❤❤❤😊😊😊
Good Morning Texas
Hey Brooke and Jason! Can't wait to see the gate up. You should use a wire brush on the gates before painting. This will give the paint some iron to stick to ❤❤❤❤ praying for people in Tenn. And n. Carolina. And anybody else we don't know about yet.❤❤
Good Monday morning Jason and Brooke, that will be interesting to see how the back yard garden turns out, I am sure very nice. The Silkies should be nice around the back yard gardens. Those steel gates are gorgeous, that was a good find Brooke. 👍👍❤️❤️🇨🇦
Can’t wait to watch all the progress on your gardens. Love the gates! It is going to be beautiful! And loved seeing pink giving you all that love. She is going to be calling that green house her home!❤❤❤❤
You should think about pouring concrete thresholds for the gate. I wouldn’t do a dogleg on the fence I would just make a big rectangle. I was thinking the same make a couple two high. Give you room to turn the tractor. Why not put Snow White and the silkies in the garden make her a little gazebo?
With those double stacked beds , do you need a rod that’s painted black, put in by them to prevent them sliding? Just wondering. Looks so good. Been waiting for this.
Carry a piece of paper and short pencil in a pant pocket and make a list while you're thinking of going to the barn for supplies - then you'll save time from running back to the barn for that one item.
Hatch some more silkies. They are so beautiful. We still haven't seen any silky eggs......😊
Good Morning Cog Family & Squad! Have an amazing day 💕
Good morning!🌞
How about plowing up all that hard pack before you fence it in, like you did with the main garden. Then you can plant some grass
Jason, pipe get the pulling for the greenhouse heater, dugout why the fence is up first😉🤷♀️!
I love watching you and how you work together. You have a beautiful farm and your animals are great. 😊
Yes, yes, hatch and buy hens for sure….YES YES CHICCCKENSSSS!!!!
I have so many comments today… I had the same idea about displaying the iron gates in a more visible area since they are so grand. Great idea Brooke!! ❤
Jason, Brooke and MaryCarl, I love your farm and your animal friends ❤
Thanks!
Thank you so much 😊
Super excited for y’all
I keep hoping the propane and water lines are marked. Your hard work really pays off.👍
We need more CHICKENS❤️❤️❤️🐓🐓🐓 Silkies ❤️
Don't forget that the propane tank has to be serviced/ supplied ! That narrower gate may not give enough space for servicing the tank !
Thanks, their hose is 100’ and it’s less than that❤️
Have you ever heard of Crownvetch for along the rocky hill? It's used in some areas along freeways as a ground cover that blooms
Put in a bunch of bird house’s in the area you can’t plant🐼
Have you ever tried pomegranate, apricot, almond or olive trees ?
What you are planning. Is so exciting. Little Pink looks so happy.
Pink & Tucker my sentimental favorite Cog Hill Farm critters
🐈⬛❤🐈⬛
Good morning CogHill and CogSquad ❤😊
Good morning to you 🙌
Of course you need more Silkies.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Gates so beautiful & grand they should def grace front of house. Nice row of double-height raised beds. New fence layout brilliant. More chickens? Always yes. Great new plans for exciting development of your Alabama Potager Garden. Farmstead Artistes Extraordinaires! Exciting how it's all coming together. My special fav Miss Pink💜👩❤👨
YES she needs more chickens!!!!
Thank for being cheerful and creative at this time. I think Brooke's fence idea is really smart. The gates are beautiful. It will be so nice to have a kitchen garden. My grandparents had one. Pinky is so cute. I'm praying for you all desvastated by Hurrican Helene.
❤️❤️❤️
That gate is perfect! Love watching yalls plan come together. I get so much inspiration from yalls videos. Thanks for sharing and bringing us along. It is really appreciated. ❤
God bless and have a great week! Praying for ALL those in Helene’s path of destruction, especially in western NC ❤
Will one wood beam high be deep enough for vegetables?
@@LynnHamric-cx4oc it really will be high enough for most veggies and herbs. Lettuce, coriander, any leafy greens, most herbs, bush beans, peppers, etc, only need 6-8 inches of good compost/soil to grow well. As time goes on the ground lower than the beds will become better and broken up. It’s amazing how plants want to thrive. 🌱🥬🫑🫛
🤍God Bless all the people around the 🌎 that are suffering, in JESUS NAME AMEN ✝️Thank you to all the CHF family for the HAPPY content. We all ❤ y’all💐
Good morning y’all..What about those curly tail chickens they’re so cute … I know they’ll probably fly the paddock you want them in but they’re so cute❤😊
Oh I can’t wait to see the progress on this project. It is going to be so beautiful. Brooke’s idea about the fencing was brilliant! Putting the decorative gates in the front so you can enjoy them every time you drive in and out is perfect. The video section of the animals was so sweet. Loved this one!🔨🛠️🪜⛓️🪛🧰
So excited to see the backyard garden area grow! Wonderful stuff! ❤️❤️❤️
Love the animal pics with the music. Nice job!
Yes get a lot more Silkies ! They are so cute 😍
Silkies count as half a chicken so 3 = 6!
My Silkies do a lot more scratching in the ground than my other chickens do. The Silkie side bedding is all fluffed up, but the other chickens side, 2 Easter Egger hens & 2 Roos bedding is all flattened. But my Silkies anyway don't tend to hop up higher than 6" so they might not get in your raised beds! Silkies = perfect chickens! 😊
Though I love the Disney reference, every time I see the little rooster Silkies with the new peacock, I hear Gladys White and the Peeps. Maybe for naming your potager flock :)
I'm so excited for backyard garden. It's gonna be beautiful!! ❤❤
Really looking forward to watching this massive project take shape. Love and light to all the Cog Hill residents.
Man, you would find that the space that you're not including in the plan would be better served if you simply run the fence as you first had. You WILL find use for it eventually. Tarp it, covered in rock like you have...raised bed. You will use for that space.
DONATIONS NEEDED IN NORTH CAROLINA .. WATER, FOOD, BABY FOOD, FORMULA, DIAPERS, PET FOOD, CLOTHES, PROPANE, BATTERIES, BLANKETS, VOLUNTEERS, GENERATORS...THANK YOU ❤❤❤❤
You both are getting older( in years only, not in looks!), so plan simpler, but yet efficiently! I know you will!😊
I'm really excited for you to get this finished, it's going to look awesome. Good idea Brooke its really going to look beautiful here where people will see it
The perfect big tool for your kitchen garden would be one of those Mario Cart sized tractors like the one Lester bought for Jami.
Saddened about NC , Georgia, Tennessee, Florida 🙏🏾🙏🏽🙏
Your eyes and heart are bigger than your ultimate ENERGY❤️
Brooke, never say we won’t start something else before this is finished… it’s kind of like saying “what else can go wrong”! lol
Good Morning sweetest people on internet!❤
Good morning guys!
Good Morning to you too
❤
Going to look so grand when done 🤗
