Just to clear up a mistake, I mentioned you cannot see the shaft rotating (roll), this is correct as it's internal rotation but you can feel and see the play before it registers an input and before you feel any resistance/engagement.

Thanks for highlighting the truth about many of these devices. They're made as cheaply as possible and to look good in photos on the internet. You dont know about the core movement until you've already bought it. Its a pet peeve that companies put out this plastic crap but price it like military-spec engineering.
Another tip for anyone who doesn't know, seek out a dampening grease called Nyogel 767A. Smear a thin coat of this between any surfaces that comprise movement and you'll get much closer to that fluid friction feel - like the feel of a professional video tripod head that makes smooth pans with no bump in the action.

Excellent review. As it happens, I'm a student pilot as well, and (although I agree with you 100%) the yoke in my real plane has the same characteristics. The yoke sticks a bit with one hand operation, and there's some dead space on rotation. It's a 45yo airplane, so that's why. A brand new yoke for flight sim that costs that much, should be better quality.
Anyway, did you ever fix it?

Slightly different setup Karl but I use Logitech G923 pedals with a different wheel (the pedals are essentially same as your throttles, required the actual wheel base to work, they're not standalone, but I found some software searching on google that you can program onto an Arduino and a adapter cable and they're able to work as standalone with the Arduino performing the task of the USB controller. You'd need of course someone to have written the control code for your specific throttles but you may have some luck if you want to investigate that route.

I got mine today and i did test everything possible. Mine is just fine, i dont have any issue like yours. The one thing i could mention, the throttle on the top, the last one feels very light, but else its just fine for the price and quality.
The review is, like i would say not fair. The product has good quality, its light plastic and i am happy for that, because i dont want to have heavy product in my hands.
Feels great, flying with one hand works fine. I mean, if you want real, then fly in real. Somehow he hates it and thats it. But for a review you have to be neutral, not your own preferences, like the yoke dont have laether, but i want it with leather...
I can recommend this product for the price, you will have a lot of fun, with big airliners and light aircraft.

I bought one and it didn't have the play yours has in it. I used the two middle throttle levers as throttles and the other two levers as flaps and spoilers but you are spot on about the snagging of the yoke as you pull/push for elevator control. I adjusted my springs and lubricated everything but it was still the same. I now have the Thrustmaster TCA yoke and throttle quadrant. The yoke is hinged at the bottom and doesn't utilise a push pull shaft so is much more precise for flaring on landing etc and the whole thing is just better quality. The throttle quadrant also has working reverser levers. It's about £50 more expensive than the Velocity one but in my opinion worth every penny.

Great overview. I will say that the play won’t bother me for the price. As a former aircraft dealer, I’ve flown many Cessna and Mooney aircraft that did have a little play so it won’t break the immersion. Also flight school planes that are abused have these issues. Would I like that not to be the case, sure but it wo t kill it for me. Especially when the other alternative for xbox is the cheap hotas or expensive honeycomb pair. Great overview tho. Best of luck with your flight training

in my country we say "what is cheap becomes expensive" this means that buying cheap is and will always be expensive, because if you are passionate about simulators like i am, you'll always improve over time, but we always make the mistake of buying bad quality stuff first, for all sorts of reasons, in my case, monetary. so i take care to use my money wisely

Glad i found this. You basically hit all the issues i was feeling after i just got it. Yeah its nice to have physical throttle and yoke, but the lack of throttle resistance sucks and the non smooth yoke sucks.
You need to remove all lateral force on the yoke shaft before it feels smooth. Had them pus some bearings in it might be nice, but its probably a cheap plastic sleeve.
I think i will be returning it myself. 350 is steep a price for what you get.

I was just about to purchase this but now I'm looking at alternatives (maybe the Honeycomb or perhaps just wait for something more.. solid). For $360, i would expect a much better degree of construction and finish (the amount of input play and not being able to handle asymmetrical pitch pressure is NOT okay). I suppose I could take it apart and add an additional roller set (or linear bearings) along the control shaft but /why on earth/ would i want to do that for something having a premium price.

I just received by turtle Beach controller and $379 in the USA I agree that they are over priced for what you get but like you said once you step up you can double and triple the cost, it might be better but it’s hard to justify that kind of money when it’s basically just a toy for adults. Most manufacturers have moved away from quality and the only concern is profit margins, they put very little R&D into the software And expect a customer to figure it out on their own. As long as all the manufacturers are on the same page and producing substandard equipment all we can do is to go to another manufacture and hope we don’t get another lemon. Thank you for your honest review it’s obvious that you are not a paid off influencer who is only after RUclips money and all the free products sent to them by manufacturers that are only interested in happy positive reviews regardless of the quality of their product.

Similar experience for me with flight gear. I love flying too but.... My Thrustmaster sliding throttle was horribly sticky until I got an aftermarket bearing kit fix, my very new Logitech rudder peddles keep losing the signal so my rudders flicks on and off (I thought it was my bad piloting until I checked an external view). I'm still checking what the problem is with that and might have to return them. My joystick is ok... Enough.... I suppose. 🙄 I sound like a miserable git but I do still enjoy flying when it all works and it's a less intense break from racing. 🛩️

The quality of sim racing hardware (especially if you venture above the low end) really makes how cheap and plasticy every other type of peripheral is. I'd love to see more peripherals made with better materials, and I'd be willing to pay more for them, but nobody seems interested in making such things. Not just gaming controllers but things like mice and keyboards. I'm using them all day, every day, so it'd be lovely not to always be touching some nasty plastic thing.

I just bought a GSI GXL wheel for sim racing, it's really amazing how far people go with quality on sim racing products as you mentioned. It's basically a real wheel. When I explain it to someone, even my brother in law who's a car guy, you get a response like 'oh that's cool'. Then I brought the wheel with me and showed him and he was like wtf this is amazing. Everything is like that, even the Xero Play Quick Release, when I took it out of the box my mind was blown how good the quality is on it. People don't mess around with their sim rigs.

I agree that when you buy cheap you will surely get cheap quality. And i have also learned to always go for well made Peripherals.
But getting high quality alternatives to the cheap stuff has never been easier in the PC Realm.
I love my Cherry MX Board 6.0 and it is built like a tank and still working like new. I also love my Protheus Spectrum G502 Mouse (after i got over the loss of my Logitech G9). For both there are many worthy alternatives from almost as many companies.
Ducky seems like a company that does not even cover the more value concious customer and surely not the budget shopper.
They only do premium keyboards for all tastes and needs.
For Steering Wheels and such... well i am quite content with my Thrustmaster TS-XW Racer even though it is only mostly metal it surely feels premium enough to me (ok the "Quick Release" is not elegantly engineered,...still it is sturdy and has no play whatsoever).
There are cheaper wheels that compromise here and there, still a Logitech Combo offers decent value, longevity and quality materials for starters. On par and above Thrustmaster there is another high volume Manufacturer... Fanatec. And i can not think of a cheaply built product from that company.
But you also have your Heusinkvelds and Simucubes and other really premium manufacturers when it comes to sim racing equipment.
I enjoy Karls Content a lot because he mainly does "reasonably priced stuff" i might up buying myself. (just got me the NLR F-GT Lite! :) )

I went for the Velocity as in Australia it only costs $430 or £215. Not sure why it’s so expensive in the UK and USA. But the Honeycomb yoke and throttle is over $900. And the new Honeycomb yoke coming out makes it three times the price of the Velocity so just not worth it. So for us in Australia, the Velocity a great deal. After 15 hours of use the sticky pitch resolved. And love all it’s features. Blows the honeycomb out of the water with features.

Hi Anthony, I am in a similar position (in Australia). I like the look of the Velocity as it complements my current gear. The price of the Honeycomb as you say is very costly in comparison although can now be had for $710. My other issue is that I use the Logitech switch panel and Multi function so if I went the Honeycomb, so many of the controls/switches will be duplicated. Seems like a waste to me. Because of this I am still leaning towards the Velocity.

@@bikesandbits1000 l tried a friends Honeycomb and It has a nice feel, but so does the Velocity. But I really wanted both types of throttles and the Velocity gives me both. l also like the fact that the panel lights tell you when things are on or off eg gear down is green and changes to red when gear i# up. Same for parking brakes, etc. it makes it so much easier when flying. Whilst the Velocity is more plastic than the Honeycomb (not that you really notice when flying), all its many more features makes it the better device. The locking mechanism to the desk is so much better esp as it needs packing away after each flight. Honeycomb would have been a nightmare. And the sticky yoke for pitch disappeared after about 15 hours of flying was bit annoying at first but everyone was right that it goes and now it’s great. And ease of setup, it wins hands down. Just such a better device because it is so feature rich.

@@KarlGosling I actually have the Honeycomb yolk, not the throttle yet because I'm still using the throttle from my X52 hotas, but it's far better than the Turtle Beach. There is zero wobble in the controls. The Turtle Beach seems closer to the old CH or Saitek models than they do to the Honeycomb, especially when see you use the throttle. I will agree that the pitch is still too stiff. Pitch gets stiffer with air speed so I don't know why a company hasn't come up with a resistance, depending on the speed but then that changes with fly-by-wire systems. You didn't bring up if there are any detents or dead zones in the TB yolk.

The throttle's are also loose and have the same height when switching to a flap handle, resulting in unintentionally touching the other levers which fall to 0 input because they are so loose. "Fresh from the box, the VelocityOne Flight's yoke may feel a bit 'sticky'. The yoke will break in over time; the more you use the controller the more this slight sticking will be reduced.
You can also pull the yoke shaft out fully (carefully) and gently rub it down with a clean, dry paper towel, then carefully reinsert the yoke shaft. However, if you're uncomfortable with that much disassembly and reassembly, we recommend that you use the controller for a while and the problem will fade away with use."

I use mine with Xbox. For those of us that use the Xbox only there was a major issue, when you go to upgrade the firmware with the Xbox two steps in you get a spinning ball of death that never stops and it doesn’t upgrade the firmware. I contacted customer support. They told me that I would need a Windows computer to plug it into do get behind the curtain and do the changes that need to be done by an actual software programmer this is the only answer I’m assuming xbox won’t talk to turtle Beach Leaving Xbox owners out in the cold find a windows, computer or go buy a windows computer, unacceptable sad to think of these bought and paid for RUclips influencers never seem to mention these things. I am also quite disappointed with the product. The reason is the imprecise handling when pitching with the yoke.
