  • Returning to Los Angeles in 1969, Darin started his own record label which was titled Direction Records, putting out folk and protest music. Darin wrote "Simple Song of Freedom" in 1969, which, in an interesting turn of events, was first recorded by Tim Hardin and the song became Hardin's best-selling record. Darin himself sang the song "live" on several television variety shows.

Bobby Darin, folk-gospel. Who'da thunk? My respect for him just went up considerably.

Is anybody listening ? Will anybody ever hear. We go to school & learn all about History, yet we never learn from it. And we don't want your blooming war ❤

I believe Darin was the most versatile entertainer of the 20th century. What he accomplished in his brief 37 years is nothing short of Legendary. Singer, musician/multi-instrumentalist, performer, actor, impressionist, songwriter, producer, arranger, variety tv show host, entrepreneur, activist. The man truly did it all, and he did it all so well. One of a kind, Bobby.

Even as a child, I recognized how special Bobby Darin was…whenever my mom would play his music or turn on the Ed Sullivan Show, I got lost in his eyes…still listening and enjoying Bobby in ‘23! Fifty years later, I can see how spot-on my childhood assessment was of him…he truly was a rare talent!

Heard this song for the first time tonight watching a movie on Bobby Darrin. Wondering why or how I never heard it. It was because I was at MCRD,
San Diego, California going through boot camp.
God Bless Bobby you and this song will live in my heart forever. 🙏

It looked like he was really enjoying himself, especially starting at 3:30. Then, he demonstrated some soul singing ability in the ending 'Freedom' coda.
