New Order's 'Regret', which was the first single off of New Order's 1993 album 'Republic'
Lyrics
Maybe I've forgotten
The name and the address
Of everyone I've ever known,
It's nothing I regret
Save it for another day, 'cause
The school is out
And the kids have run away
I would like a place I can call my own
Have a conversation on my telephone
Wake up everyday, that would be a start
I would not complain 'bout my wounded heart
I was upset, you see
Almost all the time
You used to be a stranger
Now you are mine
I wouldn't even trust you
I've not that much to give
We're dealing in the limits,
And we don't know who with
You may think that I'm out of hand
That I'm naive, I'll understand
On this occasion, it's not true
Look at me, I'm not you
I would like a place I can call my own
Have a conversation on the telephone
Wake up everyday, that would be a start
I would not complain 'bout my wounded heart
I was a short fuse
Burning all the time
You were a complete stranger
Now you are mine
I would like a place I can call my own
Have a conversation on the telephone
Wake up everyday, that would be a start
I would not complain 'bout my wounded heart
Just wait 'till tomorrow
I guess that's what they all say
Just before they fall apart

this song still sounds like perfection in 2024
A fire hydrant sounds like perfection compared to the music of 2024
YES it does!
❤ this is it ❤
A perfect song
Ok, Chandler Bing.
In 1993, my Mom died suddenly, we were very close. The only thing that comforted me were these New Order songs. My kids say I was obsessed with this CD. Love to hear them again. Beautiful!
I liked a lot your comment.
I find “normal”, very normal, that this kind of music was the only one that comforted you. This is very good music.
❤this, its what music is about
❤️
Bless you and you're mother.
Regret. That title is scary. I don’t ever want to regret anything. Living in the past lately I have been though. I see the mistake. Today I’m gonna do the things I most am scared to. Like forgive. This song takes me back to a better time. So nieve and innocent. Everything was fresh, exciting , life was not stale. But today it reminds me that I have today. New Order. A chance for new memories
A perfect marriage of lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation.
the opening riff is iconic.
Its talk of the town by pretenders
That's a stretch lol .. I mean yes... and no... more no than yes Yes there is a very similar riff but the last chord of the pretenders riff is a higher note than this.. and the riff here is is much more prominent in this song.
But both are straight up classics. The Pretenders genius is more from my teen years I'm 59, while the New Order era is much more my sisters teen years she's about about 6 years after me.. @@natureclips5849
People usually consider The Perfect Kiss, Temptation, Blue Monday, Age of Consent as New Order's best songs, but for me, this is their absolute number one song. Unparalleled masterpiece.
Cult Miyako This and love vigilantes.Perfect.
Esta tambien :vv, pero la mejor es Ceremony, tanto de New Order como de Joy Division
It's so good, it has to be considered one of there best.
So good!!
the best for me to
I think there's something melancholy about this. It's not too hard, fast-moving, original, speaks of emotion. It's just beautiful and wistful.
So very much in agreement with you
I’ve always loved New Order and their songs have bookmarked my life. I’ve recently been diagnosed with stage IV cancer and am not expected to have very long. It’s so frightening. I know they’re on tour, but the nearest date to me is in October and it’s very possible I won’t be here then. Listening to this reminds me of being so happy and genuinely without a worry in the world. I feel so sad knowing where that young woman was heading. I wish we could just do the happy bits, over and over. x
Oh man, I'm so sorry. Hugs to you. I hope you're able to make it happen. ❤
I'm so sorry. I hope you're still with us. I hope you still see them.
Sending you courage. All Gods bless you.
❤
This song also has deep meaning for me. I remember it when I went to visit Hong Kong before the Handover. Last year I saw New Order in concert with the Pet Shop Boys and it was especially poignant for me as my father was nearing the end of his life. I hope you beat that cancer!!!
Grew up with new order
How lucky were we to have real music back then
Yes my fav new order song
I've been in love with this song since I was 14, now I'm 40 and never get tired of this song. It's divine 🤟✌💙🤜🏽🤛🏿

I was working at a Top 40 Pop station in the USA. Now I'm in my 50s, and I still like it. What's harder on me is realizing the teenagers who used to listen back then are in their 40s now...
I'm a life long New Order fan and I thought this track sucked back in the day. . Now I'm having second thoughts
Me too from the south of France, i'm 41
this song gives that sad but hopeful feeling of nostalgia. A masterpiece.
TRUE WORDS BRO 🇭🇺👍
That's exactly what I feel.
Ya mate 🇬🇸
Well said ❤😢
I call it nostalgic happy melancholia! 😊
I am 73 and have loved this song since I first heard it in 2012.❤
I love this song..New Order is my favorite band...Im 56 year's old i have never see them in concert..Yesterday my dream come true..i saw them live and i was in tears
That's so brilliant! 👏
A few minutes of '80's/ '90's music can turn your entire day around!
Got that right!
Well said
❤️🎶
💯 true
Yeah sooo true.❤
I am an admitted riff person. This is one of my favorites, ever. Perfect Bliss.
30 years and still perfect.
37 years ago they played Belfast, amazing then and fabulous last night in Leeds.
Those chords. The bass. These lyrics. (So f-ing gd underrated 😢)
Oh my God!I found it...This tune was in my head and finally found it..I am back to 1993❤❤❤
Acabou com a minha infãncia
I love New Order this is such an uplifting song about throwing off the shackles of regret and living your life.
This song is really hitting me hard today. Just want to say to anyone who is also pondering about life and everything that goes along with it… take each day as it comes, and just breathe!
Right on :)
Amen.
Know exactly how you feel reading this. Sometime a song hits you right where you want it to, or the opposite! It’s about keep having that fire in your belly lit, despite everything trying to extinguish it! 👍🏻
don't go there, tried it we never think of those left behind, please talk about what your feeling inside people will understand... with love and understanding.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Literally a perfect song
Really, this may have been THE song that saved me from suicide as an autistic/add/abused teen. One of my special interests has always been rock music, keeping me jacked into these thoughtful and feeling lyrics and sounds probably saved my sanity. "I was upset you see, almost all the time/ I would not complain of my wounded heart" and "I was a short fuse burning all the time" - I had been trying to hide such big secrets from the world for so, so long
Glad to see you made it through. Keep fighting.
New order es la melodía que trasciende cualquier infierno. Se mueve en una profunda melancolia pero es tan bella su simplicidad que su universo sonoro nos adormece placidamente en un mar de caricias.
So glad you stuck around kiddo.
Hang in there ❤️❤️❤️
I'm happy you're still here!
This is the pinnacle of post punk evolution. The perfect blend of melancholy and happiness.
August 1993, my first time in London with my backpack, staying at Holland Park Youth Hostel. One sunny morning while having breakfast in the hostel I was watching MTV, like many others, and suddenly I had the surprise of a fellow singing "Maybe I forgotten...", and I never forgot New Order's "Regret" because it became the music of that joyful time, of my adventures, of my youth going around and having fun in good old Europe. A very different time, a so clean London having litters everywhere and with people naturally smiling in the parks or squares...
Nowadays, we have so much music available at hand on RUclips, but in those times a cassette or an LP was the standard, or just the fortune to get those precious and surprising seconds on MTV. Thank you, fellows!! Best regards from Buenos Aires
That was beautiful.👍
How amazing! I was a teenager living in Italy at the time.... I understand exactly what you mean. I'm in the U.S now and still this song brings me back to the best times of my life. ❤
I'm 74 2024 I missed this originally but this is dam brilliant
I'm 42, this came out in 1993, and has always been one of my very favorite songs still to this day in 2024
Damn I was only 7 or 8 when this came out and I recall hearing it on the radio regularly at that time.
This song is spectacular, it reminds me of my youth, dating and the nostalgia of good times that never come back
Sinto a mesma coisa qua do escuto essas músicas
Possibly one of the 50 greatest songs EVER WRITTEN!!
One of the best songs they ever made. And that’s saying something because they’ve made some brilliant music.
That is the problem Joy Division - New Order made such a lot of good songs.Hard to make a choice which one is best.
@@MD-ru5vs absolutely, I totally agree with you. Very hard to choose a best song because there’s so many great ones.
The collab with him, Johnny Marr and Niel Tennant was amazing. They called themselves Electronic
This deceptively simple pop song is pure, bittersweet, artistic genius.
That intro... one of the best, its unmistakable I'd know it anywhere
If you are here in 2024 you deserve an entire world made of happiness

This song turned 30 years old today! 😮🎂🎉 #NewOrder #Regret
Bittersweet is the sound of this song to me. Time passed love lost age gained youth lost. Here I am all of a sudden in my 40s. My mother told me to slow down finally have but man so much time gone. Need to start living life
I can't help but feel the same. I'm 46 and hearing this makes me feel like I'm 16 again, when this came out. It seems like yesterday; it's absolutely unbelievable that 30 years have passed. 😢

@@demo3456 Always! 😁
Potentially the best song ever written.
I keep coming back to this 20 years later

One of the most beautiful chorus for sure !
Was Bernie doing Electronic at this time?
@@sharksport01 Electronic debut was a couple of years before - with the equally terrific Get the Message - also a contender for greatest pop single ever released!

I'd love to isolate the female background singer from Get the Message and make a whole new song.
I was stationed in Germany in 1993 when the song came out I had completely forgotten about New Order until then. ten years later I'm sitting on top of a roof in Kandahar Afghanistan in the middle of the night when I heard this song from a car below me. My mind went back to 1993 and Germany, sitting in my living room watching the video on MTV most wanted with Ray Cokes

One of New Orders finest tunes
I love when he does the "on this occasion it's not true" in the second verse
I love the high register bass in this song.....
I was only a baby when this song came out, my aunt was in her mid 20's. Having her as a babysitter she would play these songs all the time. I got to like them at a very early age.
One of the best songs ever written
This song is the highest level of music
This song actually makes me cry. I have to be alone when I listen to it lol
that's what makes their music so great, it touches the listener in many ways
For me there is no issue with crying: I'm always alone

Oh thanks for the lyrics I was singing while watching the video😉💕
It’s suppose to be “ It’s the school exam, and the kids have run away.” The person who did the lyrics at the description wrote it wrong, whomp whomp.
love will tear us apart

This is one of the songs I want played at my funeral with no explanation beforehand. A note to the funeral director to play it as the last song and let everyone come to their own conclusion as they leave. Sadly my life has been filled with much regret. If I could only go back and correct some mistakes I made... Live life to its fullest. Take chances, laugh like never before. Forgive quickly. Love yourself and love others too. Life is fragile and far too short.
Well said my friend....same boat here as well, it's amazing how we as young adults squander and take life for granted only to realize it when we are older...
Amen to that brother🙏

I only have two regrets in life; everything I've ever said and everything I've ever done.
This song has been stuck in my head for 20 years.
The chorus perfectly describes the feeling of isolation and longing for human connection.
I feel that chorus
Indeed it does. I feel that their new track Restless is a millennial version of this.
+Tony Vilaysack quiet desperation is the English way.
Right on PINK F!
Kind of a low key Joy Division type lyric, hidden beneath the catchy tune
I've been stuck on this tune for 3 days now. So addicting, but I'm not complaining! This song is the epitome of the 90s. You'd be hard pressed to find this quality nowadays. I find all the best music on 90s playlists, go figure.
I think it's because they were actually reaching for a melody. A lot of music now days is anti melodic, to it's loss.
This came out in 1989
A bit of the ol' fake news in attempt to troll, huh? The album 'Regret' wasn't released until '93, as were the singles of the song 'Regret'. The song video as posted was also filmed in 1993. Believing something that isn't real as real doesn't make it real.
Reget has the perfect hook riff, complemented by layers of genius. I was blown away the first time I heard it as a teenager and it remains one of my favourite songs.
Congratulations New Order for your indication this year (2023) to Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. You guys really deserve it for all effort and work to create, develop and share amazing songs in each album since the starting point (Joy Division). Hopeful that until April 28th with the dedication and help of the fans around the world, the amount of votes that have been collected (in each 24 hours a day) on Hall of Fame´s homepage; can make you guys to be among the 5 indication positions for the ceremony of this year. Long life and holpeful either that you guys can return/visit my country with a new tour as soon as possible. Best regards from a nostalgic fan from Belo Horizonte City - State of Minas Gerais - Brazil !
The guitar riff, so simple, but so wonderful. Quality
This song has spoken to me in ways that will never be repeated! I obsessed over it years ago, permanently on repeat while I drank and smoked cigarettes! I listened to it on and off as the years rolled by. But I heard it again today and I just broke down uncontrollably! Music is so damn powerful.
Funny how some songs just drift by you when they originally come out. Then about 10 or 20 years later you realise..."Actually this was really good...how come I missed this first time around?!".
You didn't pay attention.......i noticed it right away but then again i am a fan since i saw them live in 84 and a dozend times since then.
"Just wait till tomorrow
I guess that's what they all say
Just before they fall apart"
those lines... Haunting me, yet so true
I always forget this song. My soul bought me here. The music and annotation is awesome. This was my favourite school days song.
Me tooo! I don't know why I always forget this song. But it's definitely one of my fave New Order songs, hands down. I don't get why I forget it
The first time I heard this song, I was living in Chicago. It was below zero, and we were told by our company to go out and start our cars. Luckily. my car started, and this song came on.Listened and could not get it out of my head for days. I came into the office that day, and told my co-workers, you have got to hear this song by New Order. It became my anthem when winter turned to spring into summer!!!!
Dont let regret be our history
Joy Division lost it's lead singer tragically, but these guys carried on and are amazing! And always have been.
Brilliant song. Especially the opening. Always gives me chills.

Just one of an Unbelievable amount of Awesome songs by New Order...no one will ever replace the sound of the Epic 80's Alternative Trilogy of New Order!!
The Republic album just absolutely excelled and was the dictionary definition of who is "New Order".
I agree totally with you it's a great album but for some reason a lot of new order fans dislike it and I'm not sure why
One of the best pop songs ever written in music history
And it's tune is a steal, that's how good they were without Ian.
This song was playing on The Chart Show back in April 1993 when I was in labour with my daughter. Even with copious amounts of gas and air, I can still remember it. She is 30 this year and I still listen to it. Love you Lauren ❤❤❤
One of the defining songs of 1993, personally and otherwise
Most of my life i have always been a Joy Division/New Order fan. However i had never seen them live until 2014. It was one of those shows i had to see before i die. When it finally happened, i got so emotional i kept crying happy tears during the entire show.
I've seen Peter Hook and the Light twice. They're playing Republic on their next tour. I'm going to completely lose my shit hearing this live.
Was lucky enough to catch 2 gigs on the Technique tour.... awesome
Awesome! Glad you were able to finally see such a special band. One for the ages for sure!
I watched them on Saturday. I know how you felt! They opened with this song. Perfection
Ditto. The lights, the graphics, the moment, das ist existenz
This may be one of life’s perfect songs, to me. It literally, brings me to tears. It’s hard for me to explain why. This song is up there with the Smith’s “There’s a Light That Never Goes Out”. Incredible.
a very underrated new order song. and the lowest hanging bass ever, even by Hooky standards... so awesome.

The tone he gets from his bass is gorgeous
Today, as this song becomes more relevant, it could be considered in the same vein as Love Will Tear Us Apart, which dealt with fractured relationships, but also standing out in its right.
I listened to this CD in high school hundreds and hundreds of times
Their pop masterpiece. Stunningly beautiful. I can almost never listen to it only once.

The eighties were an amazing decade. And this band was some of the finest music ever produced. No one will ever understand how special those years were unless they lived it, and i lived it in NYC. Too many memories to even try to discuss. But it was pure magic.
Best music ever

This song came out in '93.
They sure were.....
Moved in with a girl and there was a new radio station making it's debut and this was the first song they played. I remember it like it was yesterday. Word to your mom.
This song is beautiful and still as fresh and inspiring as the day it first hitt the airwaves. Thanks everyone for sharing!
I listened carefully tonight to work out why I love this song so much. It is perfection. The drumming first and foremost, then the bass, then guitar then the singer / lyrics. It's such a beautifully performed song in soooo many ways. Real talent. It's also the video. Real beauty and thought, nostalgia, love of life, nothing to regret in life. Truly beautiful.
The chorus is beyond words. It touches our souls, our innocence. It's perfection. This is songwriting.
The drums are so important in this song, but without the guitar hook, bass lines and melody the song wouldn't be what it is. The vocals are tight. Icing on the cake.

1993 leaving boarding school hearing this and thinking that's the fucking dream how wrong I was take me back I wouldn't change a thing of my past I would only slow it down
Of all their songs, this is the one that evokes the most feeling for me.
