Soothe 2 Tutorial: Sidechaining

- I think it's obvious how great Soothe 2 is as a Dynamic Resonance Suppressor but I wanted to shine some light on how great the sidechain function is as well!

I got soothe2 yesterday and I was aware of its sidechain functionality. For mixing a voice-over with music I'm blown away with how wonderfully transparent it is, meaning I can keep the music loud while having a very clear voice that cuts through.
However, the main reason I got it was for its resonance suppression. It replaces my corrective EQ, de-esser and sidechain compression (when pairing with music). On top of that, it's so much easier to use, allowing me to spend more time editing (or mixing) as opposed correcting imperfections.
Thank you for the tutorial!
Would you recommend this for any sidechain eq like for bass and kick?
How did set up the sidechain with soothe? I’m using reaper fur exactly this application and can’t figure it out. Thanks
I've owned Soothe 2 for a year now. Never knew this was possible. And it sounds great! Great tutorial. Thank you!
I was using iZotope relay, but like you said, more control with Soothe.
Super helpful Thank you! I am using it to fit a guzheng in a mix with acoustic guitar and bass. The guzheng is a chinese instrument with similar frequency as a cello so overlaps a lot... But Ireally want the guzehng to shine... Did the trick!
Thanks Steve! Always down with nerdy mixing tutorials like this. Keep them coming dude
Thanks glad you like it! Got a few more in the works :)
Just got soothe so I'm checkin out all the youtube vids on it. just wanted to say your beat was sick in the video. keep it up brotha
just noticed it the other day and now i'm deep diving seeing how other people use it! I've found its nice if have a lead guitar part triggering side chain on other tracks in that spectrum! no random pokey bits in the mix! thanks for the vid
Great video - cheers dude. That rack sounds sweet too!
Sick, haven't been using sooth for sidechain much but def will after this!
Stoked to hear that 👊🏻
Need to pick this bad boy up! I use trackspacer for this usually but it's not quite as surgical it seems
Track spacer sucks ass. You can quote me on that.
Yeah it stomps Trackspacer for sure!
Dude, that range is so tricky. I found out about Soothe2 from the Au5 course, and it worked amazing for my situation where I'm emulating the EDX pluck but need it to duck perfectly but still retain it's harmonic bouncy quality when playing along the kick and the subtle moog creamy bass. i could only do so much with a VCA, FET, or FF C2 compressor, and when I brought in Soothe2, the bouncy quality from the pluck was saved in the mix!
THAT MIX IS FIREEE BTW
Great tutorial and dope beat. Have you released it? What's its name?
Darn, and I just picked up Trackspacer while Soothe was already in the arsenal. Please have better timing with your videos Mr. Steve. Jokes aside, looking forward to more tutorials!
Haha dang my bad! Trackspacer is great but if you’ve already got soothe you’re stylin! Glad you liked the vid. Motivation to make more :)
I couldn't suss out why soothe2 was adding latency on bounce down even playing with oversampling settings, I figured trackspacer was better for that as it adds none not sure if anyone else had similar problems?
Steve this video was great. I think you're really good on video in this tutorial format. I'd love to see more from you on RUclips! Also, I didn't know you could do this with soothe 2. I might have to pick this guy up!
Thanks bro! Appreciate that from the RUclips Tut legend that you are! :D
I'm kicking myself right now. I've just spent hours trying to get a voiceover to sit properly on top of some music (as also mentioned here by @MarkVO) and I completely forgot Soothe 2 had a sidechain feature. Definitely going to start again tomorrow and try that!
Fantastic tutorial!
Mine isn't displaying the dropdown menu so I can select the audio from my kick.
Sick tutorial!
Thanks! Glad you dig it!
Thanks for the tip and killer track.
Thank you man! Its very helpful
How did you set up the sidechain? You didn’t show that. I’m using reaper and not sure how to set up the sidechain with this plugin. Thanks
nobody helped you? I have the same issue.
In Ableton, you can simply open the sidechain dropdown menu in the plugin and select your source. Then simply turn on sidechain in the plugin interface. It's next to the Sensitivity knob..
AWESOOOOME!!!!! THANK YOUUU SO MUCCH!
Soothe 2 feels like your cheating! Thanks for the video. I was doing the same thing using fab filter pro 2 but soothe does the job way smoother.
if stems are created, should soothe be applied before exporting or during mixing?
Mine doesnt show the sidechain option to the left of the black box. Any idea how to fix this?
nobody helped you? I have the same issue.
Why doesnt my copy of soothe2 have the "sidechain" menu to the left of the XY pad? Ive looked everywhere and theres no answer. Mine simply has the XY pad and the option to open up the modulation sources to the right.
Did you figure this out? Same here
@@slowriterband No.. well yes and no.. nobody has said anything to help me. I made a couple reddit posts about it; ofc nobody actually understood my issue and just condescended to me with things I already knew. 🙃
I did find a workaround tho, but I have to leave for work in 5 mins, so expect another reply here in about 8-9ish hours from now and I'll explain it.
@@t7H2si0vß2 hi, im wait your answer here)))
Bump 🤛
@@slowriterband In AB10 you have to route the sidechain track into the other track in the dropdown menu on the right side of the screen
Man, i'm using Live 10 and my Soothe2 (same version) doesn't have this sidechain option, do you know what can be?
What’s the reverb used on the sound in the end of the bar? Sounds sweet
so this sidechains it to what? the beat?
how CPU intensive is this? Does this add latency to the project?
I've been putting Soothe2 on kind of everything and to the master for a couple of years, and yeah having the master soothe2 enabled just by itselfkills my cpu, but I just enable it before rendering so it's all good.
whats the difference using this and normal sidechain??
it's more transparent. normal sidechain will push down the entire signal (or a wider band if doing multi-band), where this only pushes down the specific resonances from the source audio.
Sidechain means it reacts to another instrument, for example if you put it on bass and sidechain to the kick, the bass will get a littlebit quieter at the frequencies the kick is hitting. So the kick gets more space in the mix
so does it mean this plugin can do everything a waves trackspacer can?or do i still need the other one..
This is basically Trackspacer on steroids! They both do similar things but you have way more control with Soothe2
🔥...👍TOP👍...🔥
