Windows 10 KB5034441 Not Installing - What you need to know + How to Hide it

- Microsoft has released an update that addresses a security vulnerability that could allow attackers to bypass BitLocker encryption by using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Some computers might not have a recovery partition that is large enough to complete this update. Because of this, the update for WinRE might fail.

I enlarged the recovery partition and the update installed. It had been driving me crazy until I found your video. Thanks!
HOw big does it have to be? Mine is only 100MB, enough to boot the system.
I don't even have a recovery partition on my desktop!
Thanks for the app suggestion, really helpful
Thank you for the partition size tip. I fixed my recovery partition size and was able to install the patch.
HOw big does it have to be? Mine is only 100MB, enough to boot the system.
@@PoeLemic It failed to me with a 579MB partition. I increased the partition to 1GB and patch KB5034441 installed correctly.
5:21 yea they still haven't pushed out an update and we're almost in April
jun still no fix and now theres bad hack that needs fixed asap but can't update.
@@sly2792004 MS said they aren't fixing it, they said the update isn't really required anyways, something to do with reserved space being needed but the default is lower than what the update needs so that's why it just gives out an error.
They basically said you can find ways online on how to install it if it bothers you but you can risk bricking your pc if you're not careful, or simply just ignore the update which is what I opted for.
You can fix it,by resizing the wire partition it's easy by looking at a RUclips video
I've tried everything a hundred times. Nothing works. I'm not a noob. I'm thinking Microsoft wants to aggravate me to the point I surrender and buy a new PC with Windows 11 preinstalled.
No worries, I’m on Linux Mint 21.3 now and doing okay.
Excellent video - THANKS. Thanks for all the pointers and I've now hidden the update with "Show or Hide", which I confess I wasn't aware of. Without a recovery partition I don't need this update anyway.
The Microsoft article even says that you don't ever need the update if you don't have a recovery partition. I don't, and I've never understood what it's for?! Some form of 'convenience', I suppose? I just keep clones of various ages of my complete system. They can, after all, sit on cheaper, conventional HDDs even if your installation runs on an SSD. (If it's the same size, setting up the clone is a matter of seconds; and 1TB takes 90 mins to an HDD if it's a full rewrite.)
Wanted to say you were right, My recovery partition was 580 MB, I changed the partition size to 1GB, using AOMEI Partition Assistant, right click on the recovery partition resize> assign free space from different partition, and it fixed the problem, literally 4/5 mouse clicks and the problem is fixed, when I contacted Microsoft windows technical support they told me that my windows is corrupt this is way it is not installing, told me to re-install windows to fix the issue, and so I did, and still it didn't update, not to mention the time wasted re-installing windows, Amazing video Thanks a lot!
Yup.. I already used the show/hide app to hide the annoying faulty update. 😃
Me too! Thanks BrenTech! I read about the app in one of the prior posts.
me too
Show/Hide does a nice job!
Yeah, well, even if I can skip this update because I do not use Bitlocker, what about the next update? If this update needs a larger recovery partition, I do not trust there won't be another update that requires a larger partition too. You know how Microsoft is. It seems like a good idea to increase the partition size proactively to avoid future problems. Microsoft needs to figure this out. Resizing partitions is not a trivial task for most people and if you mess it up your computer trashed. Expecting millions of users to do this on their own is unrealistic.
Great. Thank you so much.
This update is not important if it won't go in then leave it out and use the Show/Hide tool to hide the update, The tool can still be found on microsoft website
very interesting info thank u
I don't even have a recovery partition. I use Acronis True Image to save an image of the entire boot drive to an external drive and I periodically update that backup. So I used the show.hide app to hide this update.
February 18, 2024 - I'm glad I came across this video and thank BrenTech very much for posting it. I believe there was another Windows 10 update that refused to install that a lot of people posted very annoyed comments about. Microsoft eventually released an update that addressed the problem, and then along came KB5034441😮😡 At any rate, Bren has put my mind at ease with both his explanation of what the update is, and the other information he offers here. Once again thank you very much BrenTech. Stay well Sir and I have subscribed to your channel.👍😊
Welcome.
@@brentech 👍👍😊 As us Star Trek fans say.. "Live long and prosper.🖖🏼", Sir😉
@@SabastianMoranThanks
I used "show or hide troubleshooting tool" by Microsoft and just made it hidden because it isn't needed. Essentially, I skipped this update. Reason why everyone is getting errors is because most people didn't setup a recovery partition lol and I am not gonna do that for my clients friends or etc it's a dud update 😂 I made a short about this topic as well. Cheers
I have a problem my recovery partition is in partition 1 before all other partitions. This doesn't let me resize it in partition 1 if anyone can help let me know. Its at 500mb currently but that isn't enough.
tried the method from windows yesterday, got stuck in the steps, used third party software to extend the partition to nearly 900mb and the update still didnt owrk
I am also having issues with the Bluetooth profile pack not updating. This is an issue that has occurred before in 2012. I am also getting it to ask for permissions to be seton my iPhone 13 pro when trying to pair it using the phone link app.
What error code is associated with not having bitlocker running; Is it the same error code as not having enough space?
Everything I do to fix it nothing works…. I’m not very good with pc anyhow so it could be my fault but will they give an update to fix this eventually ?😢 causes game to crash a lot

How do you stop it from showing up in the updates?
I did the troubleshooting for updates and it told me this issue was fixed. But it isn't. still not downloading. I forgot how Microsoft does things, in the past this kind of thing was normal. and in a few days they'd have a hot fix or something. so I'm pausing updates till the 18th and try again then. everything else on my PC is working perfect. so...
Hello is there any news on this update, its failing to install for me but im not sure when the next update will be to fix this issue

What do i need to do if Windows RE Status: Disabled ?
I don’t understand this update I have over 500mb in my recovery partition they say it just needs 250 it’s the same on my regular pc but I running windows on a Mac
My recovery partition was just over 500 MB and the update would not install. I enlarged to 1.5 GB and the update worked.
Well it installed on my Desktop today
Use the Minitool Partition program to Move/Resize Partition on C drive and then add space to the Recovery Partition.
I also installed the update on 09-01-2023 on my system (without any issues) which only has a 980MB Recovery partition - so I think your advice (to users who couldn't download it) for people who are comfortable doing it, to increase that partition's size to at least 1GB is probably spot-on.
the minimum is 750 MB i think. I increase it to.
You say download but mean install. Two different and separate actions.
The KB5034441 was available last year in September!?!
@@nishaann541 This is an international space - so Americans and Europeans should really avoid confusing one another wtih dates. I think @grantchallinor5263 actually meant to refer to the 9th of January 2024.
So, following ISO-8601 he should have shown the date as 2024-01-09, the format which does not confuse either Americans or Europeans, or Martians either I expect.
Does it block out any other updates from coming through?
No
Sorry there any links for that app show and hide updates i can not find one ?

I'm having the same issue but it's not affecting my computer at all. So I will just continue to ignore it until Microsoft. Decides what to do with it.
I have over a gig free in the partition and (KB5034441) still fails. ::sigh: what a FUBAR.
Yes, still failing on 04-16-2024, but I have a small partition (100MB) -- just enough to boot the system. Microsoft is always making such stupid mistakes when doing Updates. Poor QC.
i hide this update 👍
The update is required for anyone on windows 10 wanting to update to windows 11.
So, my Recovery Partition is 498 MB and the update from MS, regarding KB503441, does not work. MS says you need a minimum of 250 MB for the upload to work. Well that is wrong. Sorry to say.
Update KB5034441, I have an older laptop which hasn’t been updated since Christmas, should I and if so how do I prevent this update from installing? If it does fail to install will it harm my PC? What have others done? I’m not able to change partition sixes etc, a typical user, not tech at all.
Ignore it.
Thank you, let it fail to install you mean?@@brentech

I don't even have a Recovery Partition.
Can you believe that they release a updated and STILL HAVENT PATCHED KB5034441!??!?!
I'm in the exact same boat. Went to start up Elder Scrolls Online and my game was a bit choppy, so I checked for a windows update. Saw a new update, attempted update.... error. Tried every "known fix" so far and still.... error -_- My games lag when I have a windows update so my pc is unusable for gaming until it gets sorted.
Is Microsoft trying to get people to switch to that other "fruit" company?
Does the update attempt to reinstall itself?
Yes
@@brentech can it damage the ssd/hdd?
Nope
Thanks, fail updates + OCD = not fun.
i dont have any recovery partition.
me too
Me too and so I am scared when MS release a supposed "fix" or a script that for us without that partition will brick our systems. That's why i pause and wait some days before updating. Theys crew up so often and they are sometimes more dangerous than the supposed "vulnerabilities"; his one is not even necessary for most people, and the few with BitLocker would requiere physical access to your PC.
dont worry. i dont know about bitlocker users necessity for this update; but i saw in one video to fix this where he explained that we can use a MS tool that will hide this update, so i guess its not necessary at all. we can just ignore this error and perhaps they will fix it in future, but i dont think we need most of the updates for regular users. Just ignore it. @@FermiToll
I agree that most people should just hide this update, or upgrade to windows 11, you might as well anyways, who knows what other non-working crap microsoft will shove down windows 10's throat!
I clone HDDs/SSDs and even move them into different systems and keep software installed. This is the stupidest update EVER! It's not compatible with an install of Windows 10 from the media creation tool with the default partitioning it gives you. I did just force myself to learn how to move the recovery partition, because my daughter's computer had it at the beginning of the drive and it was too small for this update, I moved it to the end and made it 750mb and that worked! I only needed to use disk management command prompt and diskpart. When I clone hard drives to a smaller drive, I usually just murder the recovery partition, and if I would want the recovery back I'd do an in place repair install of windows 10, or upgrade to windows 11, because that rebuilds the recovery partition for you. Good job microsoft, good job, I don't see how they could make powershell scripts for this update that are safe and work and don't make people not boot. It's probably the worst windows update in history.
they still haven't fixed it...

Nobody is even mentioning that if you have Windows 10 Home, it doesn't even offer Bitlocker.
How much free space does 5034441 need? I am not going to give it an entire 1 G.
