Microsoft should be on the hook for a class lawsuit because they knew before they issued that update that the recovery partion on many users pc's would not be large enough and they sent it any way. That would be like Ford/cheverolet/Bently selling you a car for $50,000 then coming over the next day bashing the windshield out and telling you theres nothing you can do about it.. It almost seems like microsoft may have done this to users intentionally to try an force them to upgrade to windows 11 cause they were mad because users aren't adopting win 11 very fast.

@@Hardcore_Remixer when microsoft arbitrarily decided that my current machine wasn't capable of running 11... that's on them. I KNOW it is. It far exceeds the specs with a single exception. 5th gen Intel CPU. But it's an extreme CPU, 8 cores/16 threads and easily runs everything I throw at it. Still 5 years after building it. If that's the sole reason, I'm NOT building a machine based on that.
I know I can force it and it will run fine. But decided screw it, they don't want me on 11, I'll grant their wish.

I think they say it's not large enough because they have no idea why it actually fails on so many computers, I wonder if mbr2gpt sometimes fails to set the correct ID for the recovery partition because that's the only thing remotely related to partitioning a disk that I did to my Windows SSDs *after* installing Windows 10 in MBR mode many years ago.
If the partition ID is *Basic data partition* (EBD0A0A2-B9E5-4433-87C0-68B6B72699C7) or *Windows Recovery Environment* (DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC) it worked fine on two of my computers with the default 500MB partitions created by the Windows 10 installer, even if in one of them the partition ended identified (mbr2gpt?) as a "normal" *Basic data partition*
On the computer I'm using right now I "only" had to delete the 788MB recovery partition and recreate it again to install the patch back in January, the partition is the same size as it was before but I'm not sure which ID it had before, I suspect it could have been changed to *Microsoft Reserved partition* (E3C9E316-0B5C-4DB8-817D-F92DF00215AE) because it was hidden on Disk Manager and now it shows a recovery partition, but before reading the instructions to install this patch I wasn't even aware of GPT partition IDs so I think only mbr2gpt could have done it... unless Windows 10 is self-sabotaging!

@@Ichijoe2112the fix for manually shrinking your primary partition and then expanding your recovery partition involves using the command line where one typo, misplaced space or comma could be catastrophic.

    • @Ichijoe2112
      @Ichijoe2112 3 месяца назад

@@smashed_penguin That line of thinking pretty much applies across the board a.k.a life. I think the trick here is to measure twice, and cut once. Again it's called reading comprehension. You can either do it (i.e. read the fine manual), or deal with it, and reinstall from scratch.
Also what happened to off PC / Site Backups? Apple has Time Machine, Linux has rsync, doesn't Windows not have something along that line? If you're not running some kind of Backup NAS in this day, and age then you deserve to lose your data IMHO.
Nobody wants to be such a condition. But being in one, ya can either hopefully deal with it, or finding a way to deal with it.
Either way if you can't deal with this HOWTO, written as it is, by some Microsoftie Rep. Then we need not suggest something more intense like Linux, or Opencore Hackintosoh.
Again the secret is to crank out the old Max-iPad / Phablet, hit up the HOWTO and take it line by Line, perhaps taking a few side trips on how to use Diskpart. And accept that your RE Partition will be close, but absolutely NOT the same as the example. It would also be noting that you probably want to avoid the larger Partition(s).

Funny that Mucrosoft says "some PCs might not have a recovery partition...large enough". - I frequently do new installs of Windows 10 Pro, with a copy downloaded from them and I always have this hiccup because their setup formats the HDD with a partition that is too small. I have integrated into my process the steps of resizing the partition before I do updates just to avoid the error. - Maybe Microsoft could fix their installer?

This requires your device to have the recovery partition after the OS partition.
What happens for the users that don't have this?
The recovery partition in some PC's is in the begining of the disk, far away from the OS partition and between them is the EFI partition
and in some cases, there is a reserved partition too. So, for common users this will be a huge problem!

    • @Bareego

You can fix it by deleting the old partition, resizing the main partition and then make a new Recovery partition, but it's quite a process, definitely not suited for your regular user. I suspect it was an intended move by MS to get people to upgrade to win11.
