Self care isn't just holidays and massages. It's working on your habits, mindsets and healing your past. It's removing toxic thoughts, people and places in your life. It's living intentionally, purposefully and consciously.

In Sweden, we sometimes use the word "nix", which means "no". It is probably related to "niksen", because it means saying no to the hustle and yes to rest and relaxation. Did a lot of niksen this summer instead of getting very busy on my vacation. So nice to take it easy without planning in advance!

Fellow empath/introvert. In therapy I'm learning about all sorts of boundaries and how to use them in my life. The only social media I have is watching RUclips. I mainly follow cleaning and book videos. You, Vera, are the only RUclipsr I follow in this category of videos. I really appreciate your calm and thoughtful aura in your videos. They help center me when I watch them. Thank you 💕

You’re so right about social media, people get addicted to it so easily. I only have instagram, because I don’t know anyone personally who likes any kind of art and there I can share my art work and admire other artists and establish a connection based on art, BUT I set for myself the boundary of not following many people, because otherwise that would drain me, since I like to take my time admiring and commenting. I only subscribe to RUclips videos that TRULY interest me and teach me something, art or otherwise (like yours).
I didn’t know the term “niksen” (I hope I spelled it right...), in Portugal doing nothing is seen as lazy nowadays. When I was a child and adolescent (I’m 51), doing nothing was seen as a good thing, but now people have to be constantly doing something productive, otherwise they’re seen as weird. Even children. When I was a child, I came from school, I did my homework and studied and then my parents let me do what I wanted, and I played with my toys, my dolls, etc. Nowadays parents have their children’s time ALL occupied with extra curricular activities. They don’t have the time to sit and do nothing or, which I find quite useful, invent ways of playing. And when they’re not with extra curricular activities, they’re on social media.
I find this so sad, that people lost their ability to just look at the window and admire the sky or a tree, or just enjoy being on their favourite sofa. Or just stitch (like I do 😊) without a purpose, just for enjoyment.
Thanks for the wonderful video. I loved it 💙♥️🧡🖤💛❤️💗💚💜

Never heard of "Niksen" until now, so thank you! There is an old Spanish proverb that I loved though, something like, "how wonderful it is to do nothing and then to rest after". I am definitely working on reforming my workaholic tendencies and on setting healthy boundaries to protect my emotional health. I ask myself, "what is the most loving thing you could do for yourself right now?" Watching your videos with a cup of tea is definitely on that list so thanks again!

Great video💕 we must always remember to treat ourselves as though we are our best friends, give Love and patience and validation to ourselves, and not wait for someone else to do that for us. God tells us always who we are and how wonderfully and magnificently made we are, we forget that when we are in the muck of life, you are your best friend, Love yourself like that💕💕🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 praying for anyone who is struggling with stress and sadness or uneasiness, May that be lifted off of you and be healed🙏🏻🙏🏻💕💕

I enjoyed this video and your timing was perfect! I had a chaotic summer and even broke my foot and needed surgery-so now, I am all about better self care. Many of us have had wake-up calls recently, so self care is very important to practice at this time.
I especially liked your point about doing things that help us in the long term. And comfort food is not it-as you mentioned (hot chocolate or sugar…).
It’s a great practice to stop and think about these choices of self care, and to be mindful that these practices are positive.
Thank you for your thoughtful videos! ❤️

✌🏼💜🫖 I love sitting down with some tea. I’ve been drinking sencha in the am for less caffeine and it’s so good. Lately others have been asking me to do things every weekend and I can’t do the things I need like yard work let alone things for myself like a bath or sitting on my massager chair so I love this idea of telling others I am keeping my phone on silent during weekends 💚

I am a big empathetic person. I work at a high school kitchen and get to talk and know some of the students during lunch. When they are having a bad day or fought time I try to make them feel better in the short time I have, but then I worry the rest of the day about them. I do that with most people though and it’s tough to do and try to take care of myself and my family. I’m working on trying to balance that but it’s hard to do.

Great video, Vera. When you said you had "heat wave brain," I just had to share...
Our environment has way more to do with our moods than we sometimes realize, as you've pointed out in other videos. Weather is also a huge factor. If we aren't "hot beach babies," the heat is going to drain us. If cold makes us miserable, cold weather will do the same.
I live in Florida. Not great for someone who gets really drained by the heat. Recently, I thought I'd try to save a little on the budget by turning the A/C up a couple of degrees, but in a couple of days, I was miserable. I was irritable, tired, and not sleeping well, even though I turned it back down at night. So, I determined that paying a little bigger power bill was worth the comfort and feeling lots better. Now, all that being said, Florida is fabulous during those cold, miserable Winter months "up North"! 😄

Ah yes, so true! As we don't have air conditioning here in the Netherlands in most places, and since I'm very sensitive to hot weather, I usually feel pretty miserable in the summertime. Really looking forward to the fall :)

I haven’t heard of niksen but I do think it’s important to just do nothing now and then. Of course, that’s easier said than done, for me at least, as someone who feels like I need to be productive and “useful” at all times. I decided recently that Sunday would be my “day of rest” but things keep coming up. I have pets (2 cats, 2 dogs, 3 chickens) and a kid and a house and things just always seem to be falling apart!

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  2 года назад +1

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Gretchen! I can relate to that feeling of things oftentimes coming up. It's wonderful to plan a self care day like that, but when our schedule changes because of unexpected things coming up, I find it also helpful to be more flexible and enjoy some time off on other times or days of the week, when suddenly I see a window for some relaxation coming on. Kind of a combination of planning self care, but also being flexible and spontaneous about it

Sounds so much easier than self-awareness. Nixin totally freeze the mind. I would love to have a great meal, like lunch, and slowly walk around somewhere in nature with lots of greenery. My neighborhood is just streets and cement, with hardly any plants anywhere. I so miss nature. I would love sit or lay down on a nice outdoor soft cushion, maybe read and look at pictures in a magazine. Oh that sounds so nice. I love your videos!

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  2 года назад +2

Not much nature around here in my neighborhood either I'm afraid. But yes, niksen can be done anywhere :) As an introvert, I usually prefer staying home to just niksen for a while. The mind just needs a break sometimes. Even a break from our usual free-time activities. So nice :) Also, it's been studies that nature sounds and house plants can create similar effects in the body and the brain as actually being in nature. So you could get some plants, put on some nature sounds, and read a book on your own sofa :)

Another excellent video. I've never heard the term 'niksen ' but I've been doing it for a long time now. I'm really amazed that there's a positive word for it. I work in a hospital kitchen and it's very busy and there's loads of different things to deal with each day, so when I'm finished, I do nothing for an hour or two. It's very energising. On my days off, I sometimes have days where I may not do much at all. I read, listen to music, listen to RUclips, rest. I really love it. So 'niksen'- I'm voting YES!

  • @sluggo206

This came at a perfect time because I'm in a difficult family situation and I have a mild cold, so it was comforting to listen to self-care. I like "self-care doesn't have to be expensive". Niksen may become the next hygge. English doesn't have a word for intentionally doing nothing. People might say "do nothing", "veg", or "chill", but these can have negative connotations or different meanings. Niksen isn't known here, but hygge has been in articles for a few years.
P.S. Stoopwafel are becoming more common since the first Dutch import I saw this year. I've seen a couple other kinds now. I still find them too sweet. I normally eat waffles with butter and syrup, but not as sweet as this. But I've heard other Americans say they love them.

Happy to hear it, thank you Anne! I also enjoyed having more time to go in-depth about the three tips, instead of needing to go over every tip quickly. I still need to check the video analytics though, because most of the time, I find videos with a higher pace to have better audience retention. But we'll see :) I think from now on, I'm going to focus more on fewer tips, with better explanations :)

So glad to watch this, I use all of these, but vary rarely, I should do it more often. I realised sometimes I do put things for self-care in my plan for the day, but then do not do them. Putting them on the list makes me think that I did the thing. And then also feel guilty taking time for myself.. Need to change that. Guilt is strong.

Thank you so much for these reminders. I, too, am highly emotionally sensitive and can struggle at times with keeping my much needed boundaries, to live healthier. I love the bonus info in your videos too about Dutch culture. Some of my great grandparents (and before) were from the Netherlands (I'm in the USA) and I love to learn about my ancestor's culture. I am at my most relaxed when having "niksen" time too - if I can, I literally do almost nothing - just drink some tea and stare out the window at the trees etc. (it usually puts me to sleep though - guess I needed the nap).

I forgot to mention- thank you for the concept of Niksen! Oh my goodness. This is perfect. And NO GUILT…. Oh my goodness.
So this morning, I did Niksen. Watch a few min of a documentary about cats, turned that off and cuddled with my puppy and dozed off.
I am so glad to know about this concept as I am so brainwashed into thinking I always need to be doing Something. I like that you mentioned meditation is doing something.

I haven’t heard of ‘niksen’ before but I take one day of each week to ‘do nothing’ or ‘rest’ I call it a ‘Sabath rest’ . Basically I just say I cannot do anything that is on my ‘to do’ list. It is one of the 10 commandments that so many forget about or don’t make a point of following/ doing. God made us humans and therefore knows we need it, hence the ‘command’.

Ha ha. That’s my jam. Sitting around the house doing nothing productive. I hope I spelled it right. Nicksa? Lol. I think my American slang word I use for that is chillin. Oh I’m just chillin (like chinchilla 🤣🤣). I did that today for about 4 hours (I went out and had fun with just me, myself and I, but it was totally frivolous lol).
I’ve been in a funk lately also. Just the whole bag of going over the hill. Just felt so dowdy and frumpy and old. I just didn’t realize how aging at a certain point just changes so many things. Body, hair, skin...and so it’s like I wake up one day like idk how to manage all this new stuff. Hormones going berserk. Clothes don’t fit the same. Makeup doesn’t work the same. Hair products don’t work like they used to. So I did some homework and went to rehab some of my beauty/hygiene systems and finally got myself to feeling more “pretty” and fresh again. Lol. And ha ha. Yes. I finally bought a bedside little fan for my never ending hot flashes. 😅😅 I think what picked me up the most was a simple Arctic Fox purple hair coloring. Now I can’t wait to have a full head of grey hair so I can try all the funky colors on it (my younger hair is dark so in the past none of that would show up without lightening first).

@@SimpleHappyZen Lol. And thanks! Yeah. I don’t think a lot of folks actually talk about the feelings of loss of identity that come with all these aging changes. (Plus before it happened to me I was just oblivious to any of this stuff). I found some more YTubers with just that niche who helped me find my way. Inspired me. I was quite amazed at how good a lot of folks can look and feel even when “old.” (Or simply watching them do their hair and makeup. The before and after was simply phenom lol). Not that it’s just looks but you know. Nobody who was once a bit of a cutie wants to actually morph into some “ugly duckling” eh? 😅😅 Old age isn’t death...yet. Ha ha.
Love all you guys. Y’all influencers def help people a lot more than you’d ever know. And it’s def quite brave of y’all to put yourselves out there like that. ☺️ Well mostly it gave me relief. I guess seeing how even a beautiful made up older lady...looks a lot like me “raw.” I didn’t feel like such a freak I guess or so alone in it. 😬 We all can look and feel and smell a lot better if we just put in a little effort. Ha ha. But aging ya know. It just takes a little more effort really and I wasn’t used to that.

I was introduced to niksen on your Patreon, and I've been trying to incorporate it into my life and very much enjoying doing so 😀. I love the way you described self soothing and the value of it. It's a shame that it needs to be said really, it should be the most obvious thing in the world for us to do, but it seems most of us rarely do it! Tying together your time just enjoying a Ghibli movie with a recent example of self soothing of my own, I recently found myself giving a hug to a Totoro plushie that I have (the only stuffed animal I possess since decluttering the others) and as strange as it might sound, it was rather lovely and rather soothing. Clearly my inner-child appreciated that bit of comfort 😊.

I've already tried not to use it early in the morning and late in the evening in the past week, so my screen time is already showing an improvement on less time spent on my phone. I'm trying to use that time for more self care in terms of video games - like animal crossing, reading and just relaxing in my own company.
