This is simply a masterpiece
In my 45 years of experience in classical music collection, I found Eugene Onegin to be the greatest opera ever both in the beauty and virtuosity of the music and the story. If I had never listened to this Opera, I would have considered my musical experience unfulfilled.
In that same musical scale, I recommend the Queen of Spades (Pique Dame) as the second best followed by Maid of Orleans and Enchantress respectively; all by Tchaikovsky.
Hey! Am just starting to listen classical music. How to imagine the story here? Should I just listen with the flow and let my imagination do the rest?
@@voyagetoart3115 hey there you could start by reading a quick summary of the plot of the original poem by the Russian author Pushkin in Wikipedia. Then you would listen to the operate self not worrying about the details but having an overall idea. If you really like the Opera and are interested in the story then you could find a translation of the poem. It's exactly the same name as the Opera. @@voyagetoart3115 yes your idea is right if your just starting out listen to Lang Lang he doesn't do Oprah though his skill for classic music the playing of the piano is brilliant enjoy.
@@voyagetoart3115 You may just listen to the music and enjoy it without knowing the libretto but your joy would double or triple if you learn that the emotional highs and lows of different characters are reflected in the melody and orchestration.
I suggest to study the libretto while listening to the music by buying or borrowing a CD from the library that has a separate booklet for the libretto. There are some on youtube with closed captioning as well. You would then appreciate the genius of Tchaikovsky's music and his orchestration even more and remember by heart what each section of music is all about.

I saw this with my school when it came to Atlanta. I absolutely loved it!!
(Sadly some of my friends thought it was boring but not everyone can enjoy the same things)
The music is great, but I'm sorry to say the plot is tedious imo - your average Romantic moralistic 19th century dishwater.

@@shrekislove1509 Ummm no? You probably could about most of the ones from the 19th century. Classical operas, at least those that weren't comedies or similar romantic tragedies, had excellent plots when they were already based on good source material, e.g. Don Giovanni. But the 20th century, especially if you look at e.g. Berg's or Stravinsky's operas, is where it gets interesting!
@@shrekislove1509 Granted, even though I'm not a MASSIVE fan of Wagner, the majority of operas before Tristan (with a few famous exceptions like Don Giovanni, L'Orfeo, etc.) didn't focus on character development at all.
@@bathtubbarracuda2581 You did not get the plot. It's far from being moralistic. It's nihilistic. Way before Nietzsche (Eugen Onegin by Pushkin was written between 1823 and 1830)

О, нет! Это сонное исполнение, замедленное. Лучшая версия 1956 года - там и голос Вишневской юный, страстный. А какой там Лемешев-Ленский! И Онегин-Белов очень органичен тексту Пушкина. Здесь же, бесспорно, у всех бельканто, но... Спектакль, сюжет размылся. Версия для тонких ценителей звука голоса. Мне маловато эмоций

Синявская- классная Ольга. Голос сюзвучит очень молодо и свежо, что редко удаётся меццо-сопрано в этой партии. Еще одна идеальная Ольга- Лариса Дядькова, тоже очень легко звучала и прыгала живчиком по сцене. У нас в театре ария Ольги идёт в полтора раза быстрее и с бешеными мизансценами, и к концу уже контролируешь себя, чтобы не задохнуться
А моя любимая Ольга - Елена Заремба❤

I badly wanted to hear this, and here it is! Thank you, Sean Coxen, for your excellent taste and generosity. I love and admire Vishnevskaya - what a woman! Smart, talented, gorgeous, tough. Instantly recognizable. I find Rostropovich to be an incredibly boring conductor though. How can such a great cellist be such a slow, sluggish and timid conductor. How??? Why???
You're most welcome, VS. Glad you enjoyed this. Yes, Rosty is a bit slow, but for me, he is hardly boring. Probably more ruminative than what Tchaikovsky intended, but I love the way he delves into the score and relishes the complex emotions.

Yes. I think you posted it, didn't you. Very good. The Aquarius label is doing wonderful stuff, a real treasure trove of Russian opera, Bolshoi performances and singers.
Actually, that was a 1955 performance. This one, from 1957, is with Khaikin. The Aquarius label is a treasure.

@Thomas Rosøy However he preferred ballets, operas and symphonies to compose, that are all quite profane forms. I find Shostakovich more religious than him, he for instance followed the path of Bach when composed his own WTK, 24 preludes and fugues, that means rigorous counrerpoint. Tsaikovsky didn't understand Bach.

If you know Max Weber, he said that sociology tries to give answers to the religious problems in modern era. Sociology kind of substitutes theology. In Shostakovich's music the main theme is oppression. Tsaikovsky's world is more aristocratic/bourgeois world of fables and fantasies.

Вишневская наихудшая Татьяна, которую можно изобразить. Агрессивная, напористая подача звука создаёт впечатление о расчётливой и прагматичной гражданке с полным отсутствием мечтательности и наивности.
Вы бы прошли блокаду в Кронштадте и при смерти в Душе звучала музыка, опера, ария за арией… , которая и дала ей силы выжить;

Есть такое понятие, как "вкусовщина", мне например не нравится тембр Марии Каллас, но я понимаю, что несчастный человек, не может петь "от Бога", как моя Маэстра - лучшее колоратурное сопрано ХХ-го века Лучиана Серра;
Но о мёртвых либо - хорошо, либо - никак, я люблю и буду защищать Галину Павловну, так что не могла пройти мимо вашего "комментария".

@@MUDRO21 Доброжелательность не надо путать с бесхребетностью. Вишневская сама была далеко не доброжелательным человеком, а наоборот, большой интриганкой. Но говорим не об ее человеческих качествах, а о вокальных данных. Они средние. Выдвинуться вперёд ей помогли другие качества. О мертвых только правду.
