      Same here, I taught mine that the loud bangs are nothing. Started out by watching the fireworks indoors with them, cheering on the flashes. They squirm, one insisted I was nuts, but after they saw that I was looking at the sky and paid no attention to the loud bangs, bit by bit they figured out we were safe inside.
      Now, if they see that I don't get up from the loud noises, they might occasionally flick their ears but carry on sleeping or chilling.

      You know what I've noticed (and am curious if others have seen the same), is ever since COVID, people have started lighting fireworks all the time. Not just around the fourth. Nearly every holiday... it could be Christmas, NYD, Memorial day or even Columbus day for cryin out loud. They just look for an excuse to set them off. I don't know if people were just bored out of their minds and feeling restricted during lockdown or what, but I just noticed ever since 2019 it got way worse and never seemed to improve after things opened up again. It's not legal where I live, and there has always been *some* element of illegal fireworks use, but nothing like it is now. I remember when I was a kid, families would drive out to organized events where they'd do fireworks displays with music and sometimes other entertainment, but other than that maybe you'd see young kids with sparklers or poppers (not really particularly dangerous and nowhere near as loud). Illegal fireworks set off by individuals (usually reckless teens or young men) were a rare occurrence. Now it's so commonplace the police can't even keep up with it.

    • @Zalvert
      @Zalvert Месяц назад +1

      @@heatherbryant4197 Yes I have noticed people are using them more these days. Weddings seem to be a using fireworks more these days and we do not often get a notice. I think it is time the law started being enforced regarding anyone setting them off whenever they feel like it. Maybe if they included vets bills of animals injured and killed by the fireworks into the punishments they might think twice, though I doubt it.

    Totally felt Todd's stress through the video. In Estonia, where I live, December is a nightmare for both myself and my cats because the fireworks are meant to be set off on a New Year's Eve at midnight, but they start selling them so early that there's fireworks every single evening in December. Usually, when I hear the first one, I either turn on the TV or put some piano music on to make us more comfortable and to not notice the fireworks too much, and be available to my cats so they can come to me and feel safe. Previous years have shown me that piano music has a calming effect on my cats (like Canon in D and such), more so than the quiet background noise from the TV.

    Some years ago I discovered the RUclips channel Relax My Cat. On fireworks holidays I keep their fireworks music playing in the background in a quiet room with the blinds closed. I usually start playing the music in the afternoon, before people start shooting off the blasts. Where I am, people are allowed the day before through the day after the holiday, so it's a long stretch of stress. I figured it was worth it to try the music, and it does work for some cats, at least to take the edge off. Not sure what it is, might not even be the music itself, because I do like you and make it a point to hang out with my cats, even if they're under the bed or in a closet, I'll be right by them on the floor. Then they fall asleep.

    Todd may want some comfort and reassurance, but not be sure exactly what form it should take, because the fireworks are making him nervous.
    My dog, who passed away last fall, hated fireworks and thunder, and we have 2 fireworks weekends here (Victoria Day in May, and Canada Day in July). She got so scared, and it was so hard to comfort her, especially when people insist on setting fireworks off for days around the actual holiday. We would wrap her in a blanket and hold her very tightly, but she'd still try to wedge herself in behind us when we were sitting on the couch. She was a Welsh Sheepdog, but when she heard the thunder and fireworks, she turned into a trembling little chihuahua. 😢
    Was there noise outside at the beginning of the video? If so, I was wondering if Todd could have been asking you to look outside where the noise was coming from?
    You inspired me to take a look at the website for the buttons last night. I'm trying to decide which of my cats would be the best to train. It will probably be the cat that I expect to be leadt interested that will end up being the one that learns the fastest.

    The way you talk to Todd (with and without the buttons) reminds me of how I talk to my cat. He doesn't have buttons, but there are plenty of words like "play" and "look" that he definitely understands. Fortunately, no one was doing fireworks too close to my home, and for some reason my cat doesn't seem too bothered by fireworks in general. Now, thunderstorms? That's a whole other topic. How can I expect him to be calm when the whole sky is angry?

    • @TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks

      Todd is okay until very loud claps of thunder. I love a thunderstorm myself. For Todd it helps him because I would take him and lay down and take a nap with him. He sees I am not concerned, appear to enjoy them and go to sleep. Again, that helps until a very large clap of thunder, there is no convincing him that is not bad.

      @@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks Years ago, I lived with two cats. One is about 8 years old, the other three years old. Fireworks would set off the younger kitty. She would run and hide in my roommate's closet. We would spend time after the fireworks getting her to come out again. We would carry her around the house to let her see and hear that there were no more fireworks. The older Kitty was different. He was used to the noise after so many years. Maybe he need to be with you on a window to survey the fireworks, so he can better understand? If he only hears them and not sees them, they might be even more frightening.
    Cats are hunter/prey. So something like a noise without an explanation might be even more intimidating-)
