yes, send them all to funchal..this way people that really like tranquility can go in the more beautiful and peaceful smaller villages. Thanks to highways you can get to funchal from any point on the island from anywhere between 5 to 30 mins driving anyways.

Thanks for this video, glad that Santa Maria Maior is mentioned. Agree the funchal bay view is mesmerizing! As someone who has bought in that neighborhood and have spent time between US and Madeira for the past 2 years, I was able to survive without a car. The bus system is decent and taxi app is easy to use, and I would take walks downhill to the center. It's a bit steep walk downhill in some stretches but also an interesting way to explore the neighborhood while working out leg muscles :). Also like the quietness and tranquility with mostly locals as neighbors.

Super helpful information! One thing you definitely notice in Sao Martinho is the amount of construction everywhere and nearly everything is large condo complexes. I'm leaning towards a quieter area and while I know a car is a must for me to have easy full island access, I'm thinking a moped/small motorcycle might be perfect for quick trips around town and easy parking.

I agree with what you said about Funchal. 💯
On my last trip, I wanted to try staying in Camera De Lobos and Machico. I really like Machico. It was quiet and walkable. The sand beach was nice as well. I found Camara De Lobos to be really noisy and packed with tourists in the summer. When I came last December, I thought it was a quiet town. It taught me that you really have to factor in tourism during the different seasons.
You're probably talking about the small area by the bay in Camara de Lobos?
I've been looking at Camara De Lobos and Canico exactly because I didn't want a touristy place so hearing this makes me want to reconsider... Exactly how touristy are we talking? Maybe if you can compare to something? Thank you!
@@ElenaDoinoffMaquiLab I wanted to be near the Bay Area and be able to walk around the old town or even to Funchal along the beach. I rented a place up on the main road above Pingo Doce. The road was really busy with cars, busses and trucks (even in the evening hours). I didn’t sleep great with sound of the traffic. I hadn’t noticed that much traffic in December. I think there are more day visitors in the Summer months. I wasn’t bothered by the number of people walking around. It was good to see the tourism. At night the town is more quiet. I just hadn’t factored in the noise on that road with all of those extra people. I had been looking at a condo on that road… but decided might be too busy of a road for me. I want to be able to enjoy sitting out on the patio and enjoying the view. I am glad that I stayed there in a different season. I still think it’s a lovely place… but it definitely made me re-evaluating my original choice of location.
I really like Machico! Big enough to have a good share of restaurants and shops/services, a wonderful and free sandy beach area, great hikes and super quick access to Funchal and the airport.

Currently in Tigre in Argentina since the end of November 22, I´m living in Coimbra Calhabé, so I´ll be in Lisbon the 27th of December to let my stuff in Coimbra. 70 years old widower, but not the common one. Two NDE´s on board, so that´s different. I call Madeira "heaven on earth", but the mudslides & the "banana line" are to be respected. I dont like big cities cause of driving & waiting. The plan is to see the fireworks 2023 in Funchal, so let´s look at your video & Santo Antônio.

Another great video! This information is really helpful. A friend of mine rented an AirBNB in this area back in the summer for a vacation in Jan 2023. She had no idea that right beside her apartment there was a condominium build underway. The construction noise started at 5:30 am and went until at least 6:00 pm. It really did cast a pall over her vacation.

Hey Doug and Monique, these are great vlogs. Wife and I just bought our holiday home, an existing T3 modern home with an annex on the back side overlooking the amazing views of the ocean and deserted islands in the small local of Gaula in the municipality of Santa Cruz. We bought it sight unseen (or should I say) virtually ;-) It's just 15 minutes east of Funchal. Our property is very similar to the 3rd property that you covered here. We will be heading there at the end of April to take possession and do our BIG WALK with Hit the Road Madeira. If we have time, we will try to track you down while there. Hope you found yourselves some green Guinness and an Irish pub there in Madeira. Happy St. Patty's Day Weekend! Cheers!

This is really helpful for us. I’d love you to explore more areas even outside Funchal. We will be in Madalena do Mar for a month in February and my wife seriously wants us to consider settling there. I’m also intrigued with Machico, Calheta and some of the cheaper communities near the airport ( Canico, Santa Cruz, Gail’s, etc) By the way, our social little dog would not see the influx of tourists as a drawback. More people on the sidewalks means more attention from folks who want to pet him and say how cute he is. ;-)
