I kind of find it hard to dislike any characters in this game. So many could have been so horrendously mishandled, and Rise would probably have been the easiest to mess up. And yet, Atlus just kinda didn’t; they did everything they needed to in order to pull off this deceptively deep character.
I mean the character is alright, but it still seems that she was tricked into going back into the idol career. The line "he was never this good to me" referring to her manager as he gives her fans letters to her.
@@Christian-gr3gu no of course she wasn’t tricked by any means. People just wanted her back and acted nice, she got that and let a pretty long time pass before returning to showbuiseness. Also she’s strong enough to refuse to return several times and also to quit whenever she thinks she need to. No reason to think the manager tricked her for his own benefit, no reason to worry about her: if something goes wrong with that she can go back to Inaba anytime.
You know, it occurs to me that Rise would make a great FemC for P4. The idea of many Rises works with the wild card pretty well, and her celebrity status could provide some interesting twists on her interactions with Inaba as a whole.
Honestly, understanding the context behind "Marukyu Striptease" makes the creepiest dungeon in the game for me even creepier. I'd say I'm a pretty big fan of this game, and I was sympathetic to Rise before, but man. Poor girl. This series has been very educational. Thank you.
i love kanji and rise's dynamics tbh their that two friends in the friend group who always argue but you know they don't got beef, its just friendly aggressive banter.
I liked Rise but I couldn’t fully understand the sheer weight of her plight until I listened to Jennette McCurdy’s book “I’m Glad My Mom Died.” The flip side is that Rise has a much happier ending. Idols, actors and other artists do not owe their fans anything, much less owe happiness to anyone else if it harms the performer, especially if they didn’t ask for the fame and all the baggage that comes with it. Rise is very misunderstood and underrated but god damn she is a very compelling stance on public perception and I’m very glad that she came out the other side much happier and healthier.
Rise has always been my favorite character in the game. On the surface it’s very easy to dislike her, call her annoying and clingy. But from the start we see that rise is desperately searching for who she is. She tries to use all these tactics for finding her true self. She wants to believe her true self exists, it’s a fear that’s likely within everyone, the fear of having no real self. So she goes through her own head and comes up with situations that will change her life. She destroys her old sense of self and builds a new persona, but that persona is not her true self either. She just builds an ideal self. Eventually she realizes she’s chasing one ideal after another and might never be satisfied. All throughout the game we see different sides of her, some negative , some positive, and some extremely thoughtful and sad. It’s what makes her my favorite. Throughout everything she still loves everyone, she’s still so selfless even while trying to benefit herself. She just wants to find herself and help other people do the same. On the surface she comes off as someone she doesn’t wanna be, and gets judged for it. She was “ loved “ by everyone but never got seen as who she actually was. She’s easily the most relatable character in the game for me and it’s sad to see how much the community hates her and just disregards her character because she’s “ annoying “. Ironically it plays into the whole seeing her fabricated self dilemma, even in the real life fanbase of persona. I think her character is already phenomenal, but with a more rise focused story, she could’ve been made even further into her potential and people would see just how heartbreaking and beautiful of a character she has
This comment was a while ago, but this take makes me think of a new spin on what Maki went through in Persona 1. Specifically, the whole many selves and not liking her true self so she hides behind an idealized version of herself
I love Rise's character. One of the best Social Links in my opinion and one of the few characters who are consistently interesting, even in the spinoffs. Great job on the analysis! The only issue I had with her social link is how...muddled it is when it comes to her experience with the TV World. There are some implications that kidnapped victims don't fully remember everything in the TV World, so that might be why it feels like Rise forgot the lesson...or it could just be self doubt, similar to how Rise is always saying that Yu is the only one who sees the real her...yet has to ask him a few times if he's mostly interested in Risette. And I've always wondered if one of the reasons she feels such a connection with Yu is because maybe he's similar in certain regards, such as having many different "selves"? Or maybe I'm just reading too much into a gameplay mechanic. I am referring to the dialogue "Since you have [Persona], a Persona of the [Arcana] Arcana, you feel you could be closer." I always interpreted that somewhat literally. Also, it seems like Yu's dialogue options are weighted slightly depending on who he's with. For example, I notice there seems to be more "flirty" options when he's with Rise and more "smartass" options when he's with Marie than with other characters. On a minor note, it's always annoyed me that Persona fans try to claim that The Lovers Arcana has nothing to do with love...when that's clearly not the case. Obviously, there are other aspects to The Lovers Arcana, such as choice and relationships as a whole, but it always baffled me how most people try to act like there's no connection to love at all.
man screw all that deep nerd shit, rise's the best character because she saved my ears by kicking teddie out of the narrator spot Seriously though, these are always a delight to see. Keep it going, man. You got this.
One really cool thing about Rise that I like happens not too long after she gets her persona. Once Shadow Teddie attacks, Rise immediately offers to help the team as the new navigator. Based on all of her personas’ designs, her navigation style appears to rely on vision, because each holds a visor in front of Rise’s eyes. At this point, Teddie hasn’t had a chance to make Rise the pink glasses that she wears in the Shadow World for the rest of the game. Because she doesn’t remove the glasses, we can assume that she needs them. This means that during the Teddie fight, a character whose powers revolve around her vision is fighting through the fog to help a group of people she barely knows. Pair that with the exhaustion of being trapped for days and the stress of awakening her persona, we can see that Rise shouldn’t have been half as functional as she was during the Shadow Teddie fight. I don’t know if that symbolizes anything, but I do know that Rise is an A-grade, certified badass!
I think Rise helped Teddie because I think it was her will and courage to save someone who finally understands and gets what she is going through as they both searched for who they truly are
If we only talk about P4, then Rise's definitely my favorite. If we talk about P3, P4 and P5 though, then Yukari makes it really hard for Rise to be my absolute favorite one.
You know when you stand between two mirrors that are set up correctly and you can see hundreds of your reflections stretch off into infinity? One of the scenes in Sir Terry Pratchett's "Witches Abroad" (spoilers if you want to read the book.) has the villain using an octagonal mirror setup to enhance her magic. (It makes sense in the book OK.) One of the Witches who went abroad traps herself and the villain in this mirror octagon and breaks the mirrors, which traps them both in some mirror world filled with reflections but no mirrors. They are told by somebody (I read the book years ago, I can't remember who lol.) that in order to get out, they need to find their real self in amongst all the reflections. The villain goes racing off to check every single reflection to find the real one. The Witch points to herself and says "This one." The Witch is freed and gets home before her postcards do. I thought of that scene a lot while experiencing the social link for Rise for the first time. The question of "Who is the real you" has a much simpler answer than you might think as you showed in this excellent video. Diskworld is worth a read IMO.
@@Ramsey276one It's probably one of my favourite book series. There are a few books that follow those Witches, I'm pretty sure Witches Abroad is not the first, so if you start there it will probably be confusing lol.
Rise was my favorite character, I related to her a lot, with how she could never really be seen for who she really is. Sure, she's.... very "dangerous" lol, but I feel like there's a lot to appreciate with her. She's deceptively well written.
@@probablydeadoof19 I mean would the rest of girls even admit I think naoto would not sure about chie and yukiko unless pushed to do so yet they don’t and it’s could just be a random character saying these lines and rise was chosen regardless the girls might have too much pride to tell
I'll watch this later but I feel the need to pop in and let everybody know that Rise is best girl. Thank you for the great content, and have a nice day.
Rise is interesting because while the protagonist mechanically embodies the aspects of the Jungian persona she embodies it narratively. In Jungian psychology we don't just have one persona, the persona is a mask that we show to the world and we all wear different masks at different times. At work your mask might be very simple, not expressing individuality to show professionalism, but at school you might have been more willing to show more of yourself. Around your family you might be more open about your negative aspects because you don't fear rejection but your sexuality is repressed while talking to them because that's an uncomfortable aspect among family members, while around your friends or romantic partners you can express your sexuality but you might hide your negative aspects. Due to how different her public and private personas had to be at such a young age she is forced to confront this fact that most people never notice but she hasn't matured enough yet to understand it. She doesn't understand that she can act very differently in different situations while still being herself yet and she has to come to terms with that to truly grasp her true self.
Good job as always, I love the talk she brings to the table about multiple personalities and the existence of 'real "me"'. It was very enjoyable to hear you talk about it.
Same. Reminded me of one particular character and level in Psychonauts 2. Cassie's Collection. Not only does it have this one brilliant scene where Raz is asked who the "real" him is, "Who you are with your parents? With your friends? Who you reserve for around your special someone? Or are they all equally you?" , but also gives Raz a new psy power that is centered on that idea. ... And a casting reference to Invader Zim.
I really liked that video, it's really well made! There's definitely a few things I hadn't noticed about Rise's character and symbolism until this video. I love every member of the Investigation Team, but she's really among my favorite. Probably my 6th favorite character of P4G, Adachi being my 5th, Yu my 4th and Dojima my 3rd. I'm kinda happy you made Rise's video after Yukiko's video, leaving the videos for my 2 favorite characters last: Kanji my 2nd favorite, and Naoto my favorite. Can't wait for these videos to release!
The only negative thing I really dislike about her is that I had to hear her navigation lines way too many times to try and get the Hardcore Risette Fan achievement on my 2nd playthrough lmao
I'm not gonna lie, hearing your analysis of Rise and delving into her recognition of all sides of herself being "her" - phew, I had to take a deep breath and try not to cry. Thank you so much for this series!!
The scene with her being very open - one might even say, flippant - about her bust size with you, Yosuke and Kanji, who were at the time total strangers, speaks volumes about how this poor girl has been trained to see herself. Her body is a commodity, a product to show off to people.
absolutely amazing analysis, i have never even thought about this stuff for Rise, i feel like people usually just hate on Rise because she's annoying sometimes but don't actually look into her character arc and how well written it is, great video. also funny that you brought that Gage guy who survived the crazy brain trauma
I’ll be honest and say I took a little break from watching these videos for a while, but I saw this in my inbox and realized watching you is something I missed. I appreciate how you dissect stories and how often there is a moral or lesson to be reminded of. Thanks for the video and wishing you the best!!
I can't watch this until tomorrow but just wanted to say that your videos are top tier quality, as in the quality of your research, script, narration, editing... I'm only a casual fan, but your videos hype me up for when I finally can experience the games myself, hopefully in a few months. Great work!
What a great breakdown. Rise is one of my favourite characters from Persona 4, and certainly my favourite love interest, largely because her overt affection in the main plot starts to feel more genuine as you advance in her romance. One of the biggest weaknesses in the franchise is it's inability to reflect the progression of your private relationships in the main story, and upon my first playthrough I really felt like the romance built with Rise was being reflected in her actions in the story - it's only later that I realized this wasn't the case. Something unique and incredible about this video in particular is the sections on Rise's dungeon and family life. I had never thought so deeply about how the game represents her relationship with her parents, and the breakdown of her dungeon, and the music within, goes further beyond any video I've seen. It's some truly illuminating stuff. If I had one criticism, it would be the handwaving of Kouzeon. The drastic changes to Kouzeon's design over Kanzeon has meaning that I feel was sorely missed from what was otherwise a very thorough video. In particular, I think the importance of the planets and telescope show an evolution of Rise's character, and place in the world. While before, Rise transmitted herself through satellite dishes, now, she's become so influential that she's hard to ignore, and her various audiences (friends, family, fans) are represented by those within her orbit. Those that she tries so hard to reach, are finally within her realm, and manifest as whole planets, around the colourful Kouzeon, appearing as a huge, celestial entity. As for the telescope, I think it has two meanings. The first is Rise's desire to look ever higher for those she can influence, and bring light to. She brings people together, makes people happy, and generally has a positive influence, and now she's looking for even higher heights to rise to than just those available to an idol. Secondly, I think the fact that she is now represented by a telescope, instead of a radio dish, represents the fact that she can now see so clearly that influence she has on others. She realizes her own pure, positive strength, and she can see it in the smiles she brings to others. From a romantic sense, it also represents the idea that, even if she's looking into a camera, she can see through that, and see Yu on the other side, wherever he is. The line about how, when she smiles, she's smiling for him, is exceptionally powerful when filtered through the perspective of Yu himself, a similarly-lonely kid now, in the late-winter months, facing the reality that he must leave soon. Along with everything said here, what defines Rise, in my opinion, is her empathy, and ability to read others. She does use that power to manipulate, but she also uses it to help keep her friends calm, and cheer them up, and the telescope reflects that vision. Overall, just an incredible video. Naoto might be my favourite character from P4G, but Rise is without a doubt my favourite romance, and right behind both Naoto and Kanji. Thanks so much for such an insightful video!
@@HidinginPrivate Absolutely! I always love the detailed analysis that goes into each and every part of this, and Rise is a favourite character of mine, so this was extremely fun to watch!
The search for an idealized, imaginary, unattainable "self" is a common struggle for many people. I do wish the game was clearer, more final with a "You are the sum of your actions, nothing else" message.
Great analysis! Rise became my favorite romance link and one of my favorite characters thanks to her malleability. She could be whoever she wanted and that psychological and behavioral flexibility is amazing to deal with. You feel like you're dealing with a real person, with many faces for different people and situations. This video does a great job of showcasing her strengths and flaws.
It’s more is her trying to accept her other person which is risette she thinks she’s not real and a different person from her making rise hide her or push her away but after she thinks it over she begins to realize that risette is also her but she doesn’t want to just show her she wants to show the rises she has to give her make of a new look when she’s back as a idol
I get that some don’t like Rise. But I’ve always loved her character. There’s a lot going on with her understandable burnout, struggles with always seeking a new version of herself, and coming out of all of it stronger with direction. Doesn’t chase an easy goal of coming back and being more true to herself while doing it. She’s just a fun character and a good guide character to have speaking up through most of the game. Great voice acting too be it English or Japanese.
They tried that in 1 and 2. It's easy to see why they got rid of it from a gameplay perspective. When every party member can play most roles on a team, then what's the point to have them around from a tactical perspective?
Rise's conflict is why I wish the power of the wildcard ability would be removed from the series and allow everyone to use multiple personas. If anyone should have had multiple personas it should have been her.
I really enjoyed your analysis and glad you didn’t just write her off or go on complete nonsensical rants about her like many others do. Rise is my #1 favorite persona character.
One thing that confused me is that rise was bullied but she thought being a idol would help which it did but she doesn’t think they saw the real her so wasn’t that also the reason sh didn’t see that her idol persona is part of her it just confused yeah she’s cool
I hope your doing well man I just discovered your channel a few days ago while looking for lore about persona I’ve recently re fell in love with the series I hope to see you cover 5 at some point
I can't wait for the Naoto video since it's obvious how much you love her lol. Also the vid on the Chad himself really intrigues me, really curious how you're going to frame that one.
Honestly, over time, I just appreciate ALL the characters for P4 even more as I understand more about people and myself. I love every member of the cast and that love grows.
I haven't played the game in Japanese in a a few years so I absolutely don't remember what term is used in this scene, but it may be worth noting in regards to 4:37 the Japanese fandom term "oshi", which refers to a fan's favourite, typically (but not always) referring to an idol and usually (but not always) out of a group. For example, a vtuber fan might refer to their favourite member of Hololive as their "oshi". In this context "oshi" literally means "push", as in they're the one you want to push (to the forefront, to greater heights, onto other people, etc). Depending on how close the translator hewed to the original script/intentions (and how familiar they were with idol culture), it's not too wild to think that this may have been intentional. Though I will admit, I don't know if this term had yet been coined in 2008. I will also admit I NEVER noticed the eyes on the floor in Maru-Q Striptease. Holy shit. And MY GOD I cannot imagine how deep and how LONG you must have had to dig to find the origins of that voice sample. Jesus H Christ, man. Well done. Not really important but I've always liked the Marukyuu logo. The name in kanji is 丸久 and the first kanji, maru, means "round" or "circle". So the Marukyuu logo is the kanji for the kyuu part of the name inside a circle, and I just think that's neat. Additionally, maru can also, (among other things) mean "to seduce" or "to talk into" (as in the way you might talk someone into doing you a favor or making a purchase). Coincidence? Maybe! 久 when read as kyuu basically means "a long time" and is used in words like eternity, permanence, endurance, and perpetuity. 丸 can also mean a few other things, including perfection, so have fun digging some kind of meaning out of all that. Rise P4 best girl. And Ai. And Margaret? But mostly Rise.
Rise’s link teaches us that it’s one to know something but it’s a completely different thing trying to put to practice and usually the hardest part. Rise learned that the personas she had are her, but she obviously needed more time to fully accept that. She understood what she learned after she faced her shadow but actually accepting all these personas that made are also her was the real challenge
thought kanji was going to be next, seeing as the other party member videos were released in the order of joining the IT. still enjoying these videos so far, keep up the good work!
Yeah, there is a fair bit of backtracking between the Resolution of the Dungeon and the character progression in the social link, but I think that the message of the different selves is interesting enough to tackle multiple times. It is one of Persona's central themes after all. Also, long-lasting change is only built from habits, and can't really be handwaved by having an epiphany at the end of a Boss Battle. So taking the time feels only realistic.
Don't think I've ever left a comment on your videos, I rarely do leave comments on RUclips, but felt like doing it today. Really enjoyed the video as usual with this serie. Favorite character from the cast (& still pondering which one of her or Akechi is my favorite character in the serie). As usual very deep read into the character, giving me more appreciation for her. A personal reading I had of Rise giving up on her idol life despite enjoying what she brought to the world with it and enjoying doing it was that she ran away from something she cared about, a part of herself she loved, due to pressure, it being "too much" and idk I related to that a good bunch. Used to be a super competitive guy in life, trying to one up myself constantly, trying to be the best in class in some specific courses, and at some point it became too much and I just discarded that but I actually enjoyed being like that to an extent. Been trying to rekindle that for a while. And the more negative spin you've made me realize of her entering the idol world in a bit of a "forced way" but "accepting this as a way to make friends" makes me relate more because that competitive thing I had was heavily tied to school and I always hated school and being good at it, but this competitive part of me awoken as a way to make it more bearable. Also idk this character cursed me somehow, I always find stuffs that connect back to her/she connects to stuff that I adore idk it's funny lol Eagerly waiting the segments on Kanji & Naoto. Kanji cuz apparently it'll be quite long and his arc is defintively interesting and Naoto because I didn't connect to her character as much since she joins so late, so an analysis could put everything in proper order and give me more appreciation of her especially since I've later realized there was something I could related to in her arc Anyway love your work. Def need to catch up on the segments I didn't watch when I'll have more time
17:03 This is one of my favorite sociological concepts! I forget who coined it, but it’s the idea that we are not one identity, but more like a multitude of different identities. My mom has nicknamed it the prism theory.
I find myself understanding Rise a lot because of who I am. I’ve had to wear many faces over time to make people happy and to please myself. As it went on I began questioning what is my real identity. Who am I really? What one of my faces is the real one? As I gained friends certain aspects of that insecurity went away but every so often it pops back up when I begin to feel undervalued or unappreciated. It’s why she’s one of the favorite characters ever is because of just how real her writing is. You don’t have to be some famous person to relate to her and that’s sometimes hard to nail down for a character to be that relatable.
@@Ovasiig It’s pretty cool that even tho rise is a idol in this game I can kinda relate abit with self acceptance sometimes I try to act different but after a while I realize it’s not me I can just have my other personalities
The ironic thing is that persona 4 displayed in full clarity the dark and destructive side of the idol business and yet people still support it and it’s become bigger than ever lately. So basically, people knew these idols were being sexualized, pressured, and worked until they break, and they all collectively didn’t care. Such a sad thing to go back and play rise’s storyline knowing hundreds if not thousands of real women are subjected to this in real life due to our negligence and blinders.
Well it's like I said with Inoue- while there are bad manipulative people who work in the industry, and support it, there are also genuine passionate people who appreciate it as an art form. We can't cancel the movie industry bc of Harvy Weinstein- we just fire him and his cohorts and keep making movies! Some idol conditions have actually improved since 2008 but there are still massive problems for sure. There's a reason that Rise wants to go back afterall
This is pretty weird but this whole bit of Rise's "no one singular self" idea reminds me of the webcomic Homestuck specifically the heart aspect, in Homestuck there are 12 aspects that make up everything and one of the aspects the heart aspect deals with the soul, emotions and sense of self and in the comic it's said that those aligned with the heart aspect are prone to "splintering" into multiple selves and one heart aspect character even brings up the idea of "the ultimate self" a combination of literally every possible versions of someone across not only their life but even other timelines all combined into one.
Oh, man; I'm already playing P4G and I'm love with this game but, seeing this videos, gives me more context of the story; and wanting more time to continue playing. Thanks
I don’t care for Tise that much as a character, but her story is one that sticks with me and gives me chills after seeing what a lot of celebrities go through...
It took me a while to watch this cuz I wanted to save it for a special occasion, but this was a super good analysis of one of my favorite girls in the series! Go Rise! Woo!
WEEEEEEEEE! BEST GIRL RIIIIIIIISEEEEEE! Love the whole thing. Especially the parallel with Kannon. That part was news to me. I wish I knew more about her. P.s. Rise is mine!
Once I get a job I’m gonna donate $5 for every video in this series. These videos on this special game are paramount. Great work & keep it up if these aren’t all already completed. 👍🏼
The shadow is rainbow coloured, like the windows. Her light is fractured like the one in the windows. When she ownes her first persona it is dressed in white - the unison of all colours. Later on, the white is still there, not fracured, but separated by limits no less. I havent thought about this before watching this video, but it makes alot of sense to me. Love it.
Ever since i finished Persona 4, the sexualisation of these characters has really rubbed me the wrong way. Yosuke's dynamic with the girls was weird, Rise's exploitation, and Teddie's obsessions all sorta make me feel uncomfortable. This video.only confirms to me that it's most likely intentional for you to feel that way. I remember thinking Rise's design was bait for the gooners a while ago and she always stood oit as the cute one so i went with her for the Significant other because she's awesome, and theeeeen, boom. Her dungeon made me cringe, the Social Link made me really care about her, and now i can't help myself but feel sad for her. I am a Rise simp but without the weird stuff. Best girl remains untriumphed.
I feel that I like rise too I felt bad for her since she doesn’t even know what she wants like continuing to be a idol or not even tho in her social link it’s obvious she does
Small Fun Fact! Kanon/Kunzeon is/are the Japanese interpretation(s) of the Chinese Buddhist bodhisattva Guanyin who also is the Chinese interpretation of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, who is said to have the compassion equal to all the Buddhas and is depicting very different from country to country.
Another great analysis! Although i sometimes find her a bit annoying in the main story, her social link was one of my favourites from the entire game. I can't believe it took me THIS long to figure out the name "Risette" was supposed to be a wordplay on "reset" and Rise wanting to start over >.
I love Rise's style the most too. Being a girly girl and loving Persona 4 is so fun when I can see myself in Rise and all the female characters in the friend group
The half-hug in her level 10 is mirrored when Yu shows his love and begins their relationship. He hugs her, she doesnt hug back - until then. In her last social link she says "look at me!". This mirrors her shadow in her dungeon, that carried this desire. It's no longer repressed.
I've never been a huge fan of Rise personally, but I definitely do think the writing for her as a character definitely is some of the most compelling as far as party members go. I basically have the same issue with Rise that I do with Sumi in P5R, in that their personality and designs both feel very much like blatant fetish pandering.
I mean I guess I kinda get rise being fetish pandering to japanese fans who like idols & her being super bubbly but who is sumire pandering too? I don't see that at all.
@@HidinginPrivate It's mostly the whole "Senpai! ❤️" thing she does. Granted, Takemi and Kawakami also both kinda have their own things going on in the whole "fetish pandering" department. Honestly though Persona 3, 4 and 5 have a laundry list of characters that have some level of fetish pandering going on.
@@HidinginPrivate No. But the way that otaku culture in particular fetishizes nurses (Takemi, and yes, I know, she's a doctor, but the general archetype), teachers (Kawakami), little sisters (Futaba), the whole "Senpai" thing that Kasumi/Sumire does, etc. makes it pretty hard to not notice imo.
@@HidinginPrivate And actually *technically* that is sorta the case, at least for women. The societal expectation of an ideal women has a name, and that's Yamato Nadeshiko. Which you could argue is fetishized and at least partially represented by the initial impression of Yukiko, and to a lesser extent Mitsuru and Hifumi.
Rise was already my favorite character, but then you analyzed the Marukyu Striptease and I just loved her more + hated what happened to her :( Especially when you said she was 11/12 when she started idol-ing!
This video has increased my appreciation for Rise. I did think her s. link was redundant, but i didn't realize her story was about the praxis for her initial revelation. Since playing P4, I did encounter the "push" concept in the manga "Oshi no Ko," but I forgot shadow Rise's exact words and didn't make the connection. I also realized while watching this that "Risette" sounds like "reset"; its a pun of "push reset (botton)" where she resets herself and tries again. Granted, maybe that was explicit and i just don't remember the text 🤷 I have always felt Rise represented the themes of Persona very well; it's just weird how no one other than MC has multiple persona since P2. Also, while one's persona is as authentic as any other part of themself, i feel like the series has mostly forgotten that the mask isn't the full self regarding anyone other than Rise. We don't get moments anymore like in P2 where Eikichi never wears his signature look at home: he dyes his hair blue everyday before school and dyes it traditional black before going home. Like, that's crazy and says something severe about his character and his home life! His Persona doesn't remotely reflect this aspect of himself because it's Not supposed to! His public self and home self are simply different, and i wish more Persona characters rock that gap
I really enjoy these character analysis videos. 8'm just curious if yuu narukami will get one also? Sure he's a silent protagonist in ps4, besides some of the dialogue giving spices of personality. Wonder if you do decide to do one for protag-kun, you'll just use the anime or side/crossover games like p4 arena.
P4 arena is not being considered in my current analysis series as explained in my last video. I do talk about Yu some more in Eri and Kanji's segments but not much. It's easier to say what Yu isn't than what Yu is most of the time haha
i love these videos and all the attention they direct to the thought put into characterisation! when i first saw p4 as a teenager i felt put off by the way rise's sexuality is used during her dungeon and with her idol personality generally, in tandem with fanservice and the "romance bait" i saw her character was accused of being. now that i'm older i still have some mixed feelings from these past experiences but i appreciate, as you put it, how uncomfortable the way her sexuality is represented really is and how relatable her finding of her true self REALLY is. she's just a teenager who was pushed entirely out of her comfort zone from a young age without being given the opportunity to explore on her own terms. i think it's something all of us can relate to in some way, we've all grown to become who we are at least somewhat involuntarily, and even though her sl doesn't end up in any real definitive progress outside of realisation, it's enough! sometimes even knowing something to be a fact and actually acknowledging it, understanding the reality are two totally different things. and it all ties in really well with the game, the way her character is written too; rural setting and truth-searching and all that! despite having replayed p4g recently, these analyses solidify everything written in canon extremely well and help with appreciating and understanding the characters more than without! i can't wait for the next one!
Thank you for this video. I love Rise as a character because of her looks, but even more because of her social link. Probably because im a gemini, I related so much with her. I'm interested in talking with everyone, whether I like people or not I can only tell after I've talked with them enough. For example, whenever I would talk with people my personality would change, with more passive people, I can communicate with them by not being as aggressive, with more proactive people, I can be more aggressive. This lead to me misunderstanding myself, thinking, that I might be a little two-faced and not being my actual true self in conversations. Then I watched a playthrough of P4G and experienced her social link, it honestly felt so real, seeing a fictional character struggling the same way I did. It was only until I was about 17 years old when I encountered P4G and realized everything that I've said here. Rise's social link helped me do that. To this day, I still don't know what my true self is, I just follow my heart to see what I like or dislike and that to me is every real "me". So yet again, thank you for this video. It was an amazing refresher and a great analysis that showed me a bunch of new perspectives!
@@Christian-gr3gu Tricked? No. She obviously wanted to go back. Guilt tripped? Probably. Pushed? Definitely.
She has a arc that continues into Arena games and Dancing All Night with her friendship with Kanamin
id clap rise chan cheeks for sure
I can somewhat see it tbh
I thought I was the only one that thought this. I recall heated arguments on now deleted forums 10 odd years ago where I suggested this very idea lol.
I wonder if that's one of the reasons she connects with Yu so much...
I feel like it’d be a situation where Yu can’t appear in a sequel or something like p3FES
@@Chance4 I wanna see Rise in a tactical vest with a gun, just like the cover for FES.
Honestly, understanding the context behind "Marukyu Striptease" makes the creepiest dungeon in the game for me even creepier. I'd say I'm a pretty big fan of this game, and I was sympathetic to Rise before, but man. Poor girl.
This series has been very educational. Thank you.
Thanks
i love kanji and rise's dynamics tbh their that two friends in the friend group who always argue but you know they don't got beef, its just friendly aggressive banter.

This series is making me fall in love with Persona 4 all over again. Can't wait to see the finished product!
Happy to hear! I'm happy to finally finish it!
I love Rise as a character! Her moments when she flirts with MC is fun.
Gamer moments
I liked Rise but I couldn’t fully understand the sheer weight of her plight until I listened to Jennette McCurdy’s book “I’m Glad My Mom Died.” The flip side is that Rise has a much happier ending. Idols, actors and other artists do not owe their fans anything, much less owe happiness to anyone else if it harms the performer, especially if they didn’t ask for the fame and all the baggage that comes with it. Rise is very misunderstood and underrated but god damn she is a very compelling stance on public perception and I’m very glad that she came out the other side much happier and healthier.
I have that book! I didn't think about it before but now I can't unsee the similarities between Rise and Jennette's childhood.
I think her character is already phenomenal, but with a more rise focused story, she could’ve been made even further into her potential and people would see just how heartbreaking and beautiful of a character she has
THISSSSSSSS😭😭😭
This comment was a while ago, but this take makes me think of a new spin on what Maki went through in Persona 1. Specifically, the whole many selves and not liking her true self so she hides behind an idealized version of herself
Yo I agree
I think dhe constantly asked yu if he only liked ristte is because she's still insecure about herself and she's still not used to opening up to people
man screw all that deep nerd shit, rise's the best character because she saved my ears by kicking teddie out of the narrator spot
Seriously though, these are always a delight to see. Keep it going, man. You got this.
😂😅
Rise the goat
It's easier on the ears the 2nd time around, but yeah her as "navigator" as I like to call that role is much better then Teddie.
not when you play japanese dub 😅
Now now that's not beary nice of you to say 😅
I think Rise helped Teddie because I think it was her will and courage to save someone who finally understands and gets what she is going through as they both searched for who they truly are
It makes her later growth as Navigator even more impressive!
Best girl for me in Persona in general. I always gravitated towards her and all the times i played P4G i have nvr not chosen her cause i cant help it

Fully agree on that recommendation!
I must heed it myself...

Wow, never thought about the Marukyu Push Risette part! Interesting video!
It’s truly beautiful and her going back to idoling as her wanting to show the people her other self’s instead of just she idol persona risette
The scene with her being very open - one might even say, flippant - about her bust size with you, Yosuke and Kanji, who were at the time total strangers, speaks volumes about how this poor girl has been trained to see herself. Her body is a commodity, a product to show off to people.
absolutely amazing analysis, i have never even thought about this stuff for Rise, i feel like people usually just hate on Rise because she's annoying sometimes but don't actually look into her character arc and how well written it is, great video. also funny that you brought that Gage guy who survived the crazy brain trauma
already excited to see how this goes! ive never been too much of a rise fan, haha, but if yukiko grew on me after her video rise can too for sure

I've been looking forward to this video for months! Rise is my favorite and you did a wonderful job as always :)
Thank you. It was a long time getting to this one, and we still have more to go!
That title is literally the best possible title for the Rise video I could imagine. Absolute props my guy.

Here it is!
3:22 All Rises are Rise and all Rises are best girl :,))))
Yeah I loved the mini boss analysis too. That was a fantastic touch
The search for an idealized, imaginary, unattainable "self" is a common struggle for many people. I do wish the game was clearer, more final with a "You are the sum of your actions, nothing else" message.
Yeah, I think it's pretty clear but it could have been stated extremely directly- than again it has to match who the characters are
Great analysis!
Outstanding analysis! Even though I love Rise, you bring up some observations that I did not know or notice.
Your analysis on each character is very well done and very in depth keep up the good work.
Was that Rise ability pun?
Then, I suppose you wouldn't have her in the support role?
@@dirrdevil if the scan spell was in the games the scanner characters could just be regular party members.

I agree

Yeah, there is a fair bit of backtracking between the Resolution of the Dungeon and the character progression in the social link, but I think that the message of the different selves is interesting enough to tackle multiple times. It is one of Persona's central themes after all. Also, long-lasting change is only built from habits, and can't really be handwaved by having an epiphany at the end of a Boss Battle. So taking the time feels only realistic.
THISSS awakening shouldn’t erase all your issues
Man, Rise is so great. Easily my favorite character in this game
Also idk this character cursed me somehow, I always find stuffs that connect back to her/she connects to stuff that I adore idk it's funny lol
Eagerly waiting the segments on Kanji & Naoto. Kanji cuz apparently it'll be quite long and his arc is defintively interesting and Naoto because I didn't connect to her character as much since she joins so late, so an analysis could put everything in proper order and give me more appreciation of her especially since I've later realized there was something I could related to in her arc
Anyway love your work. Def need to catch up on the segments I didn't watch when I'll have more time
17:03 This is one of my favorite sociological concepts! I forget who coined it, but it’s the idea that we are not one identity, but more like a multitude of different identities. My mom has nicknamed it the prism theory.
I'm a simple man: I love Rise, so I loved this video :)
Your just u at the end of the day

@@Ovasiig It’s pretty cool that even tho rise is a idol in this game I can kinda relate abit with self acceptance sometimes I try to act different but after a while I realize it’s not me I can just have my other personalities
Great video and analysis. Rise is one of my favorite characters in P4G and is best girl
This is pretty weird but this whole bit of Rise's "no one singular self" idea reminds me of the webcomic Homestuck specifically the heart aspect, in Homestuck there are 12 aspects that make up everything and one of the aspects the heart aspect deals with the soul, emotions and sense of self and in the comic it's said that those aligned with the heart aspect are prone to "splintering" into multiple selves and one heart aspect character even brings up the idea of "the ultimate self" a combination of literally every possible versions of someone across not only their life but even other timelines all combined into one.
sending engagement! ur channel’s amazing!!
Thank you hiding!
Thanks for watching!
It finally happened Daniel. A 50min video on your Rise
@@HidinginPrivate extremely poggers
Once I get a job I’m gonna donate $5 for every video in this series. These videos on this special game are paramount. Great work & keep it up if these aren’t all already completed. 👍🏼
Goodluck on your interviews and yes I still have a couple hours to edit haha. Thanks for enjoying them
The shadow is rainbow coloured, like the windows. Her light is fractured like the one in the windows. When she ownes her first persona it is dressed in white - the unison of all colours. Later on, the white is still there, not fracured, but separated by limits no less. I havent thought about this before watching this video, but it makes alot of sense to me. Love it.
I always heard “I have laundry to do” in her dungeons theme song
Honestly, the dissonance of that line still kinda works for the context
That was a great video best boy!
Thank you Yuki!
I feel that I like rise too I felt bad for her since she doesn’t even know what she wants like continuing to be a idol or not even tho in her social link it’s obvious she does
Great video! It was interesting to learn about her last name
I'm glad!
I love how the title is made to sound like one of those gossip magazines.
Lol thanks, have a similar idea planned for Naoto's title
Small Fun Fact!
Kanon/Kunzeon is/are the Japanese interpretation(s) of the Chinese Buddhist bodhisattva Guanyin who also is the Chinese interpretation of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, who is said to have the compassion equal to all the Buddhas and is depicting very different from country to country.
Nice fun fact
Another great analysis! Although i sometimes find her a bit annoying in the main story, her social link was one of my favourites from the entire game. I can't believe it took me THIS long to figure out the name "Risette" was supposed to be a wordplay on "reset" and Rise wanting to start over >.
I can't count how many times you've changed my opinions of the characters for the better in this video series its unfair you're too good at this ;((
Finally the best girl video
Finally gamer
I CAN'T BELIEVE RISE KUJIKAWA HAS BEEN E X P O S E D, HOW WILL HER CAREER EVER RECOVER FROM THIS SCANDAL???????????????????
Eh, there's a market for it
Don’t worry man her fan base will forgive her
p4g is so cool i wish television was real
I love Rise's style the most too. Being a girly girl and loving Persona 4 is so fun when I can see myself in Rise and all the female characters in the friend group
Great video
The half-hug in her level 10 is mirrored when Yu shows his love and begins their relationship. He hugs her, she doesnt hug back - until then.
In her last social link she says "look at me!". This mirrors her shadow in her dungeon, that carried this desire. It's no longer repressed.
great video keep it up.😃😃😃😃😃
You clearly put a lot of work into this video
Thanks, yes I did
I've never been a huge fan of Rise personally, but I definitely do think the writing for her as a character definitely is some of the most compelling as far as party members go.
@@765craven4 My brothers in christ, is being a normal polite person in Japan a fetish
Rise is my favorite Persona 4 characters
She's epic
Risette/Reset - she can reset her personality to the start menu and load a different file as needed.
amazing
The many faces of Rise.
Indeed
10:32 I love english lyrics spoken by non-english speakers. Its so unique, it goes so hard.
Rise was already my favorite character, but then you analyzed the Marukyu Striptease and I just loved her more + hated what happened to her :( Especially when you said she was 11/12 when she started idol-ing!
This literally made me like rise way more then I did already
throughout all p4 franchise, rise is really like a tofu, her persona changes according on how her resolve is
More Persona 4 goodness! Thanks!
Sure! Thanks for supporting!
Granted, maybe that was explicit and i just don't remember the text 🤷
I have always felt Rise represented the themes of Persona very well; it's just weird how no one other than MC has multiple persona since P2.
5:00 and I just remembered Hazbin Hotel & Angel Dust
OH DEAR...
