First of all this video is spot on for de-scaling the Breville Dual Boiler. Breville support actually recommends descaling every 2 months if you pull 2 shots a day. I wish that was in the manual. There are a couple of things to clarify in this video. I'm assuming this a BDB v. 3 since the post date is 4/5/20. So the first thing to clarify is at the 2:56 mark, there is no 5 minute timer. It's a 20 minute timer just like the first time after you add your de-scale solution and press the 1 Cup button. So let it run 20 minutes the 2nd time too. The second clarification needed is found at the 3:45 mark. Here we're instructed to press luminated button to exit the descaling mode. However, the illuminated button to press is not the 1 Cup button, but rather the Power button. This will exit the de-scale mode, fill your boilers and begin to heat them up. Cheers!
Breville might recommend that but it all depends on how hard your water is. If your water is SOFT, that descale warning can take almost four years pulling two shots a day.
I'm glad you made this video because I was about to purchase one, and saw that most people complained about breaking the boiler when descaling, following the manual's instructions.

Your instructions miss a very important step. The V3 machines do not have a five minute flush boiler in the descaling procedure. The V2 does. In the V3, it is only the 1 cup button that illuminates and all of the processes, in descaling, display and take 20 minutes each. So for those V3 owners who are expecting the five minute boiler fill/flush to occur… don’t hold your breath.
What to do with the V3? i turned the power off after doing it two times for the V3 since there's no 5 min flush. When I replaced the filter and the water, turned on the machine again, it said to de-scale again.
@2:55 in the video it doesn't say to rinse out the tank and fill with fresh water before hitting the 1 cup button for the 2nd 20min cycle. I followed the video's directions first and followed up by rinsing out the tank and running the descale cycle 2 times with fresh water only to flush it out. Once that was completed and I hit the power button, I had no issues with steam or the descale message.
Excellent tutorial, only one question. How much of the decaling solution you used. Besides the Oracle I also have a DeLonghi fully automatic and there are markings on the water tank for the descaler and the water level meaning you mix the two in the tank.
Thanks LL but it didn't actually work for me. My machine looks exactly like the one you are showing here and I got up to the point where it says the 5 minute mark... It doesn't go to the 5 minute mark, it repeats the 20 minute one... I let it go 2 more times but figured that was enough. In the end the only way I could finish it off was to turn it off. Ideas please?

Thanks for the video. Just want to clarify on point: after the descaling cycle is finished there is no mention of emptying the water tank and rinsing out the remaining descaling liquid and then pouring in clean water for flushing. If I’m wrong please let me know. Thanks again for the video

Unfortunately, volume is a notable downside of vibratory pump machines. Higher and machines are often fit with rotary pumps which are far quieter. But that is entering into a higher price point.

I’ve heard this can brick your dual boiler and you have to only empty one tank at a time but I don’t know how to do that. Been on many forums and the general consensus is do not descale this machine you’ll kill it. I haven’t descaled since I’ve owned it, I only backflush. I just know I’m going to melt some important plastic piece when I descale. Any thoughts on all this? And please don’t say it won’t do anything and it’s as the manual says because there’s literally thousands of posts on this.
If you don’t descale regularly your machine might blow up. Either that or it will require expensive repair to remove all the lime scale that has built up in your boilers.
In my case when I press the eliminated one cup button it always does the 2pmin cycle. No matter how many times I do the cycle. I don't get the 5 min option nor does it do the final cycle. Also do you need to take out the filter from the tank when doing the descale?
I have exactly this problem! It doesn't matter how many times I run through this cycle, the One Cup button always kicks off a 20 minute cycle. Also, the instruction manual says that to complete the cycle at the end, press the POWER button. When I do that it starts to heat the water (i.e. like when you switch it on) but also tells me to de-scale! Sends me batty!
@mikhail… Repeat descale until “descale” message does not appear. You are using a V-3 machine, but the instructions for descaling are for a V-2 machine. Repeat the 20 min descale/ drain/ fill and descale/ drain/ fill and descale/ drain/ exit by selecting power bewtone. Make sure you add fresh water after replacing the filter in the water tank. Your maccina will be as good as new.
Mine is the same! I have had mine for several years. Have not been able to get rid of the descale logo. Some people say it will go away after cleaning and your use it for a few days. Has never worked for me!🤷♂️ Machine still works beautiful though.
Did this proceedure on my 920XL but was not successful. The “de-scale!” message remains on the display. I contacted Breville but they only provided me with de-scaling instructions as help. Wondering if you can provide some guidance... Thanks!
One of Breville's solutions is to de-scale again and again until the de-scale notification goes out. But if you've done that, open a ticket with Breville. This is a known issue with the Dual Boiler. I have a ticket open with them now for this same reason.
This is a really nice tutorial. However out machine (900) doesn`t have descaling access valves... Do you obtain a technology how to do this in this case, please?
Those machines need to be sent to Breville for them to descale it. I know, bummer. But look for this up on google and you'll unfortunately ser I'm right
Breville recommends repeating resetting your machine hard water level. Letting your machine sit overnight and try the descale process again. That being said, it didn't work for me and I have a current case open with Breville. My warranty expired only 4 months ago and I'm hoping they will treat this as under warranty.

hello, I have a problem with a second hand BDB that i bought 2 months ago. this week i turned it on, makes the same noise as it should, the boielr heats up to 93C, the hot water and steam works fine. the group head heats up but theres no water coming from the brew head. DO NOT DO THIS! People, please! I love this channel, but we all make mistakes and I gotta he honest. This process is NOT recommended at all! Yes, it is on the manual, but there are lots and lots of posts on internet forums (home barista, for instance), saying it damages the machine! It may even burn the sensor on the boiler! Look for the video Dylan made about it! Search breville dual boiler descale and look for dylan's home espresso. Also, take a look at the various posts on Home Barista. The solution is to use scale free water.

1) Follow the instructions on the bottle. Different descaling solutions need different dilutions 2) The machines are designed to be descaled. Personally I've never had an issue, but clearly others have had a different experience...

@Hunter Sharpless Yes I have. To reset the descale issue you have to go into service menu to reset. I think to enter service menu you hold the 1 cup & 2 cup button for 5 seconds then press the power button. Then up/down arrows to reset. I could be wrong, it's been awhile since I had to do it....

@@LifestyleLab_ Yes, vinegar can be used to descale. It is not recommended though. Reasons being, it is not as effective as other purpose built chemical products and, well, it stinks. There is no plastic in the BDB V-3 that is adversely affected by using vinegar as a descaler. Remember, vinegar is an acid and not as strong as the acid level found in descaler recommended for the Breville DB.
How do you exit de scaling? Mine is stuck in a loop, won’t stop descale. Was going for an hour and continued to descale. Tried everything from turning off the machine to holding down the power button. Nothing works.

I bricked mine (blew out thermal fuse) when I used a powdered base descaler. It caked the thermal probe so it didn't fill the boiler with water causing it to blow out the thermal fuse. Use a Liquid descaler
@@shinku5463 it's not about the descaler used, there is really something wrong with their descale process. the boilers shouldn't be turned on during this process because there is a high probability that the water level sensors will not work when descaler solution is used regardless if powder or liquid resulting to your thermal fuse or heating elements to be toasted. doing a descale doesn't need the boilers to be on.. only the pumps are needed for this process.
@@leomedina5760 nope its my powdery descaler that fried my boiler. The water sensor got completely covered causing a short signifying the tank is full when it is not. So it heated the empty boiler until the thermal fuse popped. and yes the boiler is used descaling requires hot water why do you think steam comes out of the drip tray on every purge? I verified this again since I descaled 3 days ago. It's even in the MANUAL. I own the damn thing and I know what steam looks like. ___________ 3 - Begin Descale Press 1 CUP button to proceed. Machine will fill boilers with descale solution and HEAT to temperature. During this time, water may flow through the group head. Wait for countdown timer to reach 0. What triggers the de-scale prompt? Number of shots or hard water buildup? I de-scaled a number of times until steam stopped working after a de-scale. Breville said, 'do a manual de-scale'. That didn't work and an expensive repair followed. Had to ship the machine to another city for an authorized repair. No indication what was done in the repair. Online forums have many many different theories and it just makes my head spin...
If your machine was THAT damaged, you were using very poor water that would scale any machine very quickly. The descale alert is triggered by volume of shots, AND the water hardness setting you are supposed to program in using the included test strips when you first get the machine
My water isn't that hard, It's city water and I use a Brita filter and change the machines filter regularly. My brain hurts! @@LifestyleLab_ And I ALWAYS descaled when the machine asked for it..
Brita filters are unfortunately not very effective at removing water hardness. You should be ideally be aiming for a PPM between 50-85 for use in an espresso machine, ABSOLUTELY no higher than 150
Best option is to buy bottled water with a good ppm and mineral content (La Marzocco recommend Crystal Geyser). Or use distilled water, and remineralize it with something like third wave water espresso formula

ACKCHUALLY the longest breath hold record is 24 min so use this to practice your breath hold lol

You're likely still in decaling mode. Be sure you've exited descaling mode to regain full functionality of the machine

@A Maximus it's the 3 minute 45 second mark in the video. At that point you can just hit the power button to exit de-scaling mode.

@@shinku5463 it's not about the descaler used, there is really something wrong with their descale process. the boilers shouldn't be turned on during this process because there is a high probability that the water level sensors will not work when descaler solution is used regardless if powder or liquid resulting to your thermal fuse or heating elements to be toasted. doing a descale doesn't need the boilers to be on.. only the pumps are needed for this process.
@@leomedina5760 nope its my powdery descaler that fried my boiler. The water sensor got completely covered causing a short signifying the tank is full when it is not. So it heated the empty boiler until the thermal fuse popped. and yes the boiler is used descaling requires hot water why do you think steam comes out of the drip tray on every purge? I verified this again since I descaled 3 days ago. It's even in the MANUAL.
I own the damn thing and I know what steam looks like.

What triggers the de-scale prompt? Number of shots or hard water buildup? I de-scaled a number of times until steam stopped working after a de-scale. Breville said, 'do a manual de-scale'. That didn't work and an expensive repair followed. Had to ship the machine to another city for an authorized repair. No indication what was done in the repair. Online forums have many many different theories and it just makes my head spin...
If your machine was THAT damaged, you were using very poor water that would scale any machine very quickly.
The descale alert is triggered by volume of shots, AND the water hardness setting you are supposed to program in using the included test strips when you first get the machine
My water isn't that hard, It's city water and I use a Brita filter and change the machines filter regularly. My brain hurts! @@LifestyleLab_ And I ALWAYS descaled when the machine asked for it..
Brita filters are unfortunately not very effective at removing water hardness. You should be ideally be aiming for a PPM between 50-85 for use in an espresso machine, ABSOLUTELY no higher than 150

Best option is to buy bottled water with a good ppm and mineral content (La Marzocco recommend Crystal Geyser). Or use distilled water, and remineralize it with something like third wave water espresso formula
