Michael Clarke is the first authoritative figure I've heard today to rule out the truck bomb theory: yet it still seems to me the most plausible explanation, given the immense size of the blast and the difficulty of mining such a well-protected structure - but unlike me he usually knows what he's talking about.

I respect him but this time what he says is bs . Most combat veterans who had witnessed truck explosion say it way that, easy cheap no need massive logistic . One can clearly see the fireball expands above the bridge not from underneath . Moreover we see large pieces of concrete remaines . From a underneath explosion nothing would have left of that section .So the explosion hit the bridge from above . We talk about 1- 2 tonnes of birthday cake or even more judging the size of the fireball .

It will take more than 2 or 3 weeks to repair the collapsed road bridge but a contraflow system on the remaining carriageway could be set up quickly. The rail bridge will be weakened by the heat from the burning tankers. That would take a long time to repair properly by cutting out and replacing the rebar but knowing Russia they will just replace some of the track. Eventually that section of the bridge will show signs of failure.

In 1917-1918, Lawrence of Arabia proved that the best strategy for disrupting Turkish trains supplying their forces in Arabia was to use explosives to severely damage, but not bring down, railroad spans over bridges and culverts. That way, the Turks were faced with the task of first demolishing and removing the wrecked structure, and then replacing it with new construction or extensive rebuilding. The fire-damaged train bridge in this Ukrainian operation is a perfect example of how to do it, a century after Lawrence.

When looking at the fallen road surface there is a question to be asked. If the explosion was caused by the lorry on the road, then the road surface would be heavily scorched. Even the white road markings are still visible. The explosion must have come from below the bridge. It was probably remotely detonated, when the train passed.

I don't see anything that specifically suggests this wasn't a massive truck-bomb. The post-event footage doesn't show signs of any penetrating or cratering explosion (such as from a missile). It seems infeasible that an SF unit could get that quantity of explosives rigged on the bridge without detection - smaller shaped/cutting charges would have been used; a different type of blast: plus they'd have been able to target the rail bridge as a priority (or both bridges) if it were an SF team laying charges en-situ.

On a non related note, now that the Crimea bridge is down, Portugal now has the longest bridge in europe and we portuguese have nothing to do about it, it was definetly the ukrainians, so... yea... take that, Russia...

This could be the Ukrainian attack that tips Putin into doing something extreme, a major escalation 'somewhere '.
