I personally think that adaptive training guidance is huge plus in this watch. I have Fenix 5X Plus and what is very frustrating is that they did not provide any training guidance from Firstbeat. Some that it has such as Performance Condition and Training Status is not enough and overall, F5X+ is fairly a complicated device. It has way too many options and settings that makes your head explode. I learned almost all of them but sometimes, I just don't want to mess with it. I want a watch that will look at how I feel in the morning and tell me what I need to do. F5X+ is a cool watch but all it does is it collects tons of data and it is up to you what you gonna do with it. I need a watch that knows how to use that data, analyze it and tell me what to do to improve. Therefore, I am seriously considering selling my F5X+ and getting this watch instead.
Suunto 5 doesn't do navigation function properly, because connection to Movecount is disabled. I have a Sparta trainer, and thought it was a good upgrade, but it was a downgrade for more money . I'm returning the Suunto 5 tomorrow.
Maybe I am a bit late. Which is the better watch, Suunto 5 or Suunto Spartan Sport? I had a look and feel of the Garmin Forerunner 45 and 735xt. They seem to much like toy watches all plastic. just do not like the feel although the specs is fantastic. The suunto you can wear anywhere and it feels smart.
It has a similar price as the Garmin Forerunner 645 music, which offers barometric altimeter, track navigation and music. Unfortunately Suunto is always years behind.
I have used the Forerunner 645m for about a year and am now instead looking at the Suunto 5. Why? Well, I would like to have a watch that actually does what it promises. The Barometric Altimeter on the F645m simply doesn't work, the GPS is horrible (at best) and the music feature is useless since the watch constantly drops the connection to the headphones. One year and two replacement watches from Garmin later ...I have given up.

Seems that it's just a small incremental update over the Spartan Trainer? I love my Spartan Trainer and I don't see much of a difference between the Spartan 5 and my current watch. But the Garmin FR45 and FR245, on the other hand....
Just wished Suunto would include ANT+ in their watches. I love the look, but just can't go without ANT+ . Considering a pair with multiple devices like my iPad and watch at the same time, having that compatibility is a must. That goes to Polar too
Ray, you know. I wanted to get myself a Suunto 9 Baro (after already having myself a Garmin Fenix 3 Titanium and wanting to see the options for an upgrade). But after knowing it does not has the packed features like the Garmin devices, I kinda seconded that. Don't get me wrong, Suunto does manufacture great wearables devices, but the lack of ability to stream music on your wrist, a full Topo map and also a contactless payment seems to deter current users from going for this brand, given an option, as opposed to their main competitor, Garmin :)

Hell yeah the slightly cheaper competitor to Sunnto, FitBit Versa, has contactless payments and also the ability to stream music on it. Yes, it still boils down to what individual preference wants. To me battery life, intelligent battery settings and fused track settings are what makes me choose suunto as these features trump the competition for me. I don't think it's a binary choice based simply on the features you mentioned, the your priorities can mean you can choose suunto over the others and you'll get something that you can't get elsewhere.

Then again, it was being used as a comparison to the Suunto 5, as since for the likes of Suunto offering these in their "mid range" devices, the options could thus varies across others (btw Polar had arleady made a huge step from their traditional like square watches to their first ever round shape) The likes of Garmin Vivoactive 3, and then the newly release Forerunner 245, 45/45S, 645 series, etc. can really go up against the Suunto 5. Btw, if im not wrong, all of the Garmin mentioned above has the ability to pay, stream music and has topo maps, of which, if you were to do the price comparison (vivoactive 3 is at USD249++, forerunner 200 series is at USD299++ and the many like), the Suunto 5 comes in at circa USD 270 ish? I so badly wish I had kept my Ambit 3. By far my favorite running watch of all time. I gave it to a cousin thinking she would use it but nope... It was a custom one too. I had gotten the Fenix 3, and I miss my Ambit.
Since Suunto decided to discontinue Movescount support, forcing us to use a much simpler mobile (not working) application, both my watches have become useless. Not capable of setting up custom workouts or targets....waiting for my Fenix 5X Plus to be delivered. My heart hopes I am wrong.......
Hi, I have been looking at a smart/outdoor watch... I definitely want more of an outdoor GPS ABC watch more than just an exercise watch... but so confused because of ALL the options. The (Garmin Fenix) seems to be the best but, is a lot of $$$ for a beginner user. However, the Garmin instinct seems to be real low end. Do you or anyone have any suggestions to help me pick one? If the Fenix really is a good solid watch that I can rely on I will spring for it... but on the fence on whether it has more than I need. Thanks you.
Same issue. Have you found the right watch? Suunto is solid in terms of GPS but for heart rate sensor nothing beasts apple. I’ve heard that Garmin isn’t accurate with its GPS & HR when consorted to Suunto and AW respectively.
I just got into the sportwatch scene, and the technology looks ancient. The resolution, the colors, the input delay...hell, even the design of the interface... what is this.
Suunto is amongst the slower ones display wise. However the key thing all these companies have is multi week battery life and massive gps battery life.
I know this is an older video, so I hope you still reply to this. Is the display of the S5 transreflective, does it get better to read in direct sunlight?

There's only 9 with a few colour variations and custumization is non-existent. But the watch looks good, feels good, the GPS works fine, and despite me having a job where i get into small spaces withmy hands, it doesn't scratch easily. One thing I was afraid of was that the antenna, that's in that bump on the bottom of the watchface, would be poking into my wrist, but it's very comfortable to wear. I'd say just buy and try, and if you don't like it, send it back.

I had suunto 5 watch. Two months after the warranty expired, while swimming in the pool where I used the timer, it let moisture into the inside of the watch through the user button and damaged the screen. I'm really lucky :(
Stuck between this and a Instinct for general road/trail running. I live in Southern Maryland which is FLAT and really do not get into the mountains very often . Will I miss the Barometric altimeter in the S5?
I doubt that. You can forget the altimeter of the Instinct. Even my outdoor watch, which i had bought something like 18 years ago is not so extremely dependant from the barometer. You can calibrate the altimeter of the Instinct every half hour if you want the correct altitude. Edit: Otherwise the Instinct is a really good watch.
I have the ambit3 sport Got it on sale$ 249 oz now I have to repair too often? and GPS is missing a few metres when I swim open water or pool "outdoor" mostly 99%. Do you think the 5 would be better?
You don't seem too impressed with the 5 Ray , should I return mine , on route as I type and swap it for the 9 . Im a keen runner and hiker and have enjoyed switching from Garmin to Wahoo , for cycling . Like the solid reviews as well

Why is is so hard to put HRV/rMSSD capacity to these watches? These watches are not the option for advanced user. The oura ring and Whoop has the capacity to track HRV. These big brands Polar/Suunto/Garmin should really include this feature to be able to track HRV. It is the first thing that matters.
So Garmin actually records HRV data to the file (if from a chest strap). It's a simple option you can toggle in the menus. As for Oura and Whoop...my guess is that if you asked industry experts, they'd note that optical-driven HRV is highly variable (especially with any movement)...at best. ;) It's OK for things like stress tracking where they're able to use lots of down-time (non-movement) to figure it out, but once movement is introduced it mostly goes out the window.
@@Dcrainmaker It does not help, if the HRV data is recorded, yet not usable straight from the watch for example in the form of rMSSD/milliseconds, which would be the preferred choice. Many watches indeed record HRV-data, that can be then exported to be analysed with other applications. This in mind, sadly, Oura and Whoop beats these "new" sport watches here even if with not that spot-on accurate readings. Make no mistake, future watches will have this feature. Also, HRV indeed is used to measure recovery and readiness to train. It makes the training dynamic in unprecedented levels.
@@Dcrainmaker What I meant was these sport-watches got the capacity to export the data. Third-party application analyses this data and shows the rMSSD-score. Whoop has a software that shows the HRV-score. It does not need to export the data, yet I do not know does it have the capacity to do so.
So noob question, isnt Suunto's Stress measure calculated by HRV? If not, how is Stress measured? By the way, I'm looking for a more wallet friendly alternative to Whoop.

I'm probably the least biggest fan of the Sports Tracker site out there. I just don't get it, such a massive downgrade from Movescount.
There's virtually no chance of that with today's technological-corporate limitations. Not because Suunto couldn't technically achieve it, but because as it stands today they'd need telecom carrier support to do so. Realistically only the Apple's of the world can drive that. Even Garmin has struggled with the Vivoactive 3 Music LTE, due to limited carrier support and lots of silly things (if you have an iPhone for example, you won't get iMessages on it).
Yes nice review. I'm still waiting for a smartwatch that compares to my gear s3 frontier, and my gear s3 classic. Especially with the one UI update. The integration with my Samsung phone and my Samsung watch is seamless.

In many ways it's similiar, in other ways not. The Suunto 5 has more triathlon/sensor features than the Instinct. Whereas the Instinct has a bit deeper 24x7 type metrics.
It's just gone progressively downhill since the ambbit 3 peak. New suunto app sucks. I'm now unable to utilise any of the old excellent apps you could have on the ambbit 3. You cannot even plan a route in the app and use it on the watch!!
What sports watch would you recommend for the first watch. it should be durable but also stylish because it would be use to orienteering (gps) and a regular watch
Suunto is an overrated brand. Price is damn expensive, hardware is not up to date and design is ugly. For the same price Suunto selling you can get a better offer from others like Garmin, Casio and etc. You only have to looks around and do some comparing back to back.

No, not at this point. It's merely a every 15 minute check-in, and then shows daily average and sleep average. One of my key disappointments.

Living in the flat Amsterdam, you won’t notice lack of altimeter.

So Garmin actually records HRV data to the file (if from a chest strap). It's a simple option you can toggle in the menus. As for Oura and Whoop...my guess is that if you asked industry experts, they'd note that optical-driven HRV is highly variable (especially with any movement)...at best. ;) It's OK for things like stress tracking where they're able to use lots of down-time (non-movement) to figure it out, but once movement is introduced it mostly goes out the window.
@@Dcrainmaker It does not help, if the HRV data is recorded, yet not usable straight from the watch for example in the form of rMSSD/milliseconds, which would be the preferred choice. Many watches indeed record HRV-data, that can be then exported to be analysed with other applications. This in mind, sadly, Oura and Whoop beats these "new" sport watches here even if with not that spot-on accurate readings. Make no mistake, future watches will have this feature.
Also, HRV indeed is used to measure recovery and readiness to train. It makes the training dynamic in unprecedented levels.

@@Dcrainmaker What I meant was these sport-watches got the capacity to export the data. Third-party application analyses this data and shows the rMSSD-score.
Whoop has a software that shows the HRV-score. It does not need to export the data, yet I do not know does it have the capacity to do so.
So noob question, isnt Suunto's Stress measure calculated by HRV? If not, how is Stress measured? By the way, I'm looking for a more wallet friendly alternative to Whoop.

There's virtually no chance of that with today's technological-corporate limitations. Not because Suunto couldn't technically achieve it, but because as it stands today they'd need telecom carrier support to do so. Realistically only the Apple's of the world can drive that. Even Garmin has struggled with the Vivoactive 3 Music LTE, due to limited carrier support and lots of silly things (if you have an iPhone for example, you won't get iMessages on it).

Garmin 5x plus. Got it on sale a couple of months ago. Nothing can compare really.

Yes nice review. I'm still waiting for a smartwatch that compares to my gear s3 frontier, and my gear s3 classic. Especially with the one UI update. The integration with my Samsung phone and my Samsung watch is seamless.

Is this Suunto 5 same level performance Garmin Instinct?
In many ways it's similiar, in other ways not. The Suunto 5 has more triathlon/sensor features than the Instinct. Whereas the Instinct has a bit deeper 24x7 type metrics.

It's just gone progressively downhill since the ambbit 3 peak. New suunto app sucks. I'm now unable to utilise any of the old excellent apps you could have on the ambbit 3. You cannot even plan a route in the app and use it on the watch!!
I've also contacted suunto for help several times over the last month and I'm still waiting for a reponse

I think you were being a little kind to the gps tracking. I would be rather annoyed at those results personally. Gps tracking is one of its main jobs.
It's still a beta device/firmware that's not yet released. Looking at the other watches on those same tracks, it did about the same as them.

Do not buy a Suunto5 watch. The rubber strap will break, due to sunlight, within a year. And Suunto will not repair it

Suunto is an overrated brand. Price is damn expensive, hardware is not up to date and design is ugly. For the same price Suunto selling you can get a better offer from others like Garmin, Casio and etc. You only have to looks around and do some comparing back to back.
