Very good review. 👍 I have been a fitness watch enthusiast for a very long time. I had many Garmin, Sunnto, Polar and Samsung watches over the years. I currently have a Garmin Fenix 6X Pro Solar. It is a good watch but I cannot say that I am overly happy with it. One FirstBeat feature that I find extremely appealing is "Adaptive Training Guidance". As far as I know, this feature is only available in Suunto 3/5 and Jabra Elite Sport Ear Buds. Also, Polar has something similar as well. I think that F6X Pro is a better watch than Suunto 5 Peak in general..however, one thing that I absolutely love about Sunnto 5 is that Adaptive Training Guidance feature. I know that a lot of people do not care as much about it but as someone who is not a pro athlete, I like to be able to get up in the morning..look up my watch and see adapted training plan and know exactly how much I need to workout for that day. Yes, F6X Pro has Garmin Coach, Weekly Training Load Progress and Daily Suggested Workouts..but I do not find them as intuitive as Adaptive Training Guidance Plan that Sunnto 5 has. Suunto's system is simple to understand and implement for average users. Daily Suggested Workouts are an attempt by Garmin to mimic Adaptive Training Guidance of Suunto but for one, it only works if you are cycling or running (what if I want to hike at an incline on my treadmill?) and also, to enable it you have to do either 2 outdoor runs or 2 outdoor/indoor rides on your bike. Call me a whimp but it's freakin' freezing cold outside..I do not have a desire to go do two outdoor runs to enable Daily Suggested Workouts lol. Garmin is so good in collecting fitness data and deriving Pro features from it such as EPOC, Training Effect, Training Load etc..but unless you are a Pro, for an average user it just makes it bit complicated to understand and implement in your daily routine. As far as I know, Garmin bought FirstBeat..couldn't have they just used that one single algorithm that is in Suunto to make it little easier for us average users? I love Garmin, I love mapping feature that it has..but I just don't find its fitness algorithms as practical for an average person. I am tempted to have both Suunto 5 Peak and my Garmin but then I would be in between two echo systems which I would hate in the long run...I guess in order to get Adaptive Training Guidance, I would have to resort to buying Jabra Elite Sport..which I did but I had to return them because the built in HR monitor inside was making some weird low but fast ticking noise that was driving me nuts. I am thinking about ordering a newer upgraded pair but not sure that Jabra Elite Sport is a good quality device based on mediocre review ratings. Anyways, I had to vent my frustration a little in this post. DCRainmaker, if you are reading this, do you have any ideas as what is the best thing to do? It seems that after all these years, companies are still not there yet when it comes to using fitness data to work for us instead of giving us a headache trying to interpret it.
I've been worried about Suunto for a little bit now. . . I love having more competitive options out there and I'm a bit worried this is going to go the way of the dinosaur 😬
I feel like Suunto is just slowly giving up and in. They’ve realized everyone has blown past them and the Suunto 5 Peak is the result of not even trying or caring. And now they’ve just released a titanium band version of the Suunto 9 Peak 1,100 US$ 😂. Suunto is now just trying to get all the money they can out of their customers without actually innovating anything. What they need to do is come out with an all new UI or overhaul/redesign the UI they have now with a new look/layout, come out with new watchfaces and customization options and or an AMOLED screen Suunto UI (not Google WearOS) high end watch. But, they will never do that. Because they’ve just said screw it. Keep it up DC you’re awesome!
@@jeffreytillack4709 Me too. Just seems like they've had a real lack of innovation in the past couple years. They're certainly not what they once were.
@@KC-UT4rmAZ I think Suunto should to make the Suunto 7 into the next Epix somehow. Even if we could get 25hrs out of a charge that'd be a game changer for me. Surely they could stick a bigger battery into the 7 somehow? The screen is fantastic, it has all the required features and resources/fitness/health stuff now. They need to update it and use it as their low end flagship model instead of the 5.
I use a Suunto 7 for most activities (nothing beats the beautiful watch faces and detailed mapping) but for those days when I go far I use a Fr245. Best of both worlds and still cheaper than most of the big brands flagship watches.
Great review again Ray, nice one. I would like to add that I have a Suunto 7 and can get 10hrs battery life with the GPS set to best. And in usage with no activity tracking I can get over 50 hours battery life (and I have everything except AoD turned on). It's low compared to a dedicated sports watch for sure, but it spanks pretty much any other smartwatch 🙂
Buen video, buen analisis y conclusiones. Enhorabuena !.
I'm getting it for sure. Sports Tracker which i use since around 2007 or 2009 is deeply integrated with Suunto. Also design of those devices is perfect. I'm so happy that they merged together (under American corporation)
@@Dcrainmaker somewhat jagged lines isn't too bad, there's a tech called "fused track " to make better interpolation between the gps intervals. It's supposed to cope even with biking.
Awesome review, now i know what i need, allready watch 5 reviews and this tells more! I have polar vantage m and it is crap. Old Suunto Ambit 3 has better gps and fully customized trainings with own build custom mini apps
Thought about the Suunto 9 Peak as a replacement for my Forerunner 920xt, it looks great and I like the layout/look of the screen and app but at the price point I'm thinking the Forerunner 945 is the wiser choice.. Same goes for this vs the 745 I guess
Hi, great video. You talked about other watches on the same price range. I am looking for a running and trail running watch, would you recommend me this watch or a different one staying in the same price range? I would really appreciate your opinion. Thanks a lot, have a great day.
Thank you for reviewing this watch, I bought it a couple of weeks ago and I'm trying to get to grips with it after having a very basic Garmin. The main reason for purchase was decent battery life and navigation for fell running. It seems OK so far, I haven't used the navigation yet though...one question, how do you turn it off?? CAN you turn it off? Ha!
Ray, The dim display? You haven't go it in DND mode have you? My spartan sport does this. if that's turned on its really dim. Press and hold the middle button on right to go to shortcuts and then should see DND. if that's not it and the display really is dim that's going to kill it in sales. This is £259 in the UK and I can get a 245 music for £199. Having music on board sounds good. Tough marketplace for Suunto right now. Had much better experience with my Spartan Sport than my Vivoactive but they need to evolve to compete.
Hello Ray, thanks for the review. Is the 5 peak also “slow” in the menus as the 9 peak was? With the new update for 5/9/9baro series with new altimeter algorithm are you planning to do a review/comparative between before and after and with another brands? Thanks
Yup, it's just as painful in there. You can see it a few times in the hands-on section (last 10 mins). As far as taking the older watches out with an altimeter test, if I lived in an area that had hills - I'd definitely do so! Sadly, living in the Netherlands, I don't have but a few meters of elevation gain on most runs/rides. So when I travel (like for the 5 Peak review) is really the only time I get meaningful elevation.
Sports Tracker is on the market since 2007 and I have all my sport data there since then. Suunto is on the market even longer with quality products. In the meantime many other brands and solutions changed, bankrupted etc Even Endomondo xD Suunto is also completely different quality. I'm staying with them for another 15 years or longer 😎
What suunto product would be the next step up here? The 7 that you mention? I hike mountain bike backcountry ski etc. is the 5 enough or is the display a deal breaker?
I currently have a garmin vivoactive 3. I've been considering getting this watch with sales on right now. Is the Suunto 5 Peak a better option for me. I like to run, don't carry my phone with me when running, and I also like to do calisthenics workouts. A large reason for wanting a new watch is accurate calorie tracking so I can work out how much to eat. Is this watch a good upgrade or are there better options?
Does it turn off? Unfortunatly when i bought the old Suunto 5, i didn't know it doesn't turn off. It is beyond my comprehension why someone would make an electronic device that doesn't turn off. Every night you gotta put the watch in a drawer or something because the light sensor keeps lighting up the room all night long.
Primera: Led pulsaciones no funciona. He tenido tres Suuntos. Primero Ambit, despues Spartan y ahora 5 Peak.
Needs an update at the 10 minute mark. Structured workouts can now be created natively in the Suunto app and synced to the device. Great overview, anyway. Agree on the display, but it's not a deal breaker for me, not at all.
After 6 months of use 2 right buttons didn't work properly I can't even shut down my alarm anymore I hit My Suunto Watch to turn off the alarm.. such a shame and disappointed
