Take Your Horchata To The Next Level | Ep. 1 - Making The Horchata

Horchata is a traditional Mexican drink that's typically made from rice soaked in water and is flavored with cinnamon and sweetened with sugar. Some versions use dairy and nuts while some are both dairy and nut free. It's a drink that's so good and so easy to make. In this video, I'm going to show you just one of the ways to make horchata. I'll then share 4 fun and unique recipes in the preceding videos that you could try the next time you decide to make some!
► Ingredients
- 1 cup long grain white rice (amzn.to/3wRegoo)
- 3/4 cup almonds (amzn.to/3Vee0sF)
- 1-2 cinnamon sticks: start with 1, you can always add more later (amzn.to/3WX614O)
- 1-2 star anise: only add this if you like the taste, it can be quite strong (amzn.to/3wZD3Xb)
- 1/4 cup sugar (amzn.to/3UYanpu)
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk (amzn.to/3UYanpu)
- 2 cups milk (my favorite: amzn.to/3UYanpu)
- 4 cups water (divided)
► Directions
1. Optional: toast the rice, almonds, cinnamon, and star anise in the oven or on a pan until lightly golden. Toasting will result in a earthier bodied horchata.
2. Add all the dry ingredients above into a blender along with the sugar, condensed milk, and 2 cups of water.
3. Blend until smooth.
4. Add the remaining water and milk and allow all the ingredients to soak for at least 4 hours or overnight.
5. After soaking, strain the horchata solids out and store the horchata in a pitcher. It should keep in the fridge for up to one week.
