Working on reorganizing my garage workshop. I'm really liking your miter station and wall cabinets. I think these are definitely going to be useful for me. Thanks so much for posting these.
I was building a new router table this weekend, and I was nearly done and routing out the inset for the router plate in a really-sweet looking laminated top. I was using a plunge router base, and after I was done, I hit the lever to un-plunge the router and I set the router down on the table as it was still spinning down. Unfortunately, the router didn't completely retract and when I put the router down it made a huge gouge in my nice new laminated top. My first thought was about quitting woodworking and getting a new hobby, but then I thought of the moment at 5:33 where you set the spinning router down on your miter saw station top, and I recalled someone saying the real skill in woodworking is learning to fix or hide your mistakes. I've decided to relocate where I'm putting the miter/t-track on the router table so I can remove the damage with a dado. In the end, no one will know except me, unless they ask about the positioning of the miter track...
I have been thinking of making exactly this project. This video, along with your bottom cabinet video is going to be my guide for building it. Thank you!
This is great. It also made me rethink my RAS Miter saw station. 1 - It made me realize I don't need it as long as I was originally thinking. 2 - It also reminds me that I could never afford that plywood, but I can still make it work. I always end up building my shop tables and such out of 2x4's. However, I love watching others build these amazing pieces of shop furniture. Just because mine won't be as fancy, I still learn what to add or take away from my design to maximize functionality. Thank you again for another great video.
Great job my friend. I am looking for some inspiration for a project just like this and so far yours looks like the plan I am going with to fit my garage. Thanks for sharing and I hope it goes well...I know I will probably make mistakes like you with the router 🤣
I had an idea to add the wood stop in my the counterTop because of space and knew someone had to have one and found your video. I watched this on TV but I had to come leave a comment because I received so many other solutions and ideas for different projects I have going on. You showcased so much in this one video and as a new DIYer, it’s Gold! Thank you!
This is so helpful, I’m about to build a mitre station and have done that ‘overthinking’ thing to the point I don’t know where to start- but this …has inspired me to crack on…many tks
That was exemplary...well planned, well built and well installed. Hoping you get years of enjoyment out of it. Also...thanks for leaving in the router accident, we've all had our little mishaps that cause us to curse and throw things...you handled it very well considering the time and money you're into this project.
I have been picking away at building 2 6 foot sections of workbench in my garage based on your design here, and made a similar mistake to your gouge in the top. I was using the flush trim bit to make it flat, and the little wheel at the top of the bit just... came off. And I took a gouge out of the top. At least it's on the side and I can point it to the back... damn it! haha
I just discovered your channel and it's my new favorite wood working channel. And because knowledge is power and you have taught me a lot already, I figured I'd share a useful tip with you: If you do happen to strip out your Tapcon holes, you can easily fix it, and you honestly dob't need a Tapcon screw to do it, you can even use wood screws, even for mounting/attaching things to a cinder or cement wall. Just keep some strands of jacketed wire of various gauges in your tool arsenal and when this happens again, just shove a length of wire in the hole that gives the screw something to bite to. Works great! I can't take this credit though, I learned it from Next Level Carpentry's channel. If you're not aware of his channel, check it out, he's a wealth of great knowledge.
T track is an interesting idea, I have extended fence pieces running straight w the mitre saw fence for longer lumber, and if I need a stopper I just clamp a block onto the fence extension. Good work brother
Related to this....did you ever make the flip style stop blocks. In the video you mentioned that you would come back to do that. I also used t-track on my miter station with blocks like you built but I find that they are often in the way and wish I could flip them out of the way rather than sliding them all the way out of the track.
I have a couple dozen food storage containers labeled and ready too. I even have some of those in a larger shoe bin if they are project hardware etc. You did a great job. And you weren’t kidding about your platform drawers needing to be able to hold weight! Whooweee!
Yep. I think this is the route I want to go. I have an old miter station that I build from Ana white plans about 7 years ago. Time to upgrade it. It’s too high. And I never finished out the underneath storage. I think this would work perfect.
Good build process and explanation. A simply solution I used when I screwed up (the underside) of a butcher block countertop like you did: Look at the gouge, think of a neat design that you could route/chisel yourself, then route/chisel your desired design/shape, fill with tinted epoxy, sand, finish, be happy. :D
Love this setup. I bought the plans and im halfway through building when i realised my mitre saw wont fit. Its an ozito sliding mitre saw, and with the 600mm deep benchtop, i cant slide the mitre saw back and forth. It needs to basically sit off the bench to give enough room to slide back and forth. What do i do?
Looks great. I finished mine early this fall. I did deep drawers on the lowers instead of cabinet doors with pull outs. Do you plan to move the outlet box this is right behind your miter saw? I thought that was the “mistake” that about “ruined” the project you referenced in the intro.
Oh the hole! I knew what was going to happen as soon as you picked up the router from the dado. That would drive me 😜. What about routing it out and putting in a medallion with your logo? Very nice work station. 😀
you would just have to make the cabinets much deeper or don't put them against the wall. That style of sliding miter saw doesn't play well against a wall.
Matt, I have watched all your videos. They are extremely informative and well done!! I am about to build my miter saw station. 2 questions: 1) Why did you feel that the Incra T track with measuring tape wasn't adequate? I was going to purchase and I'm holding off. 2) I have a DeWalt 12" slider. How much more do you like the Festool 10" Kapex? Thanks and keep making great videos that help all of us!!
I did not like the incra measuring tape system and you can't insert any other brand tape into the slot. The kapex is great. I had a 12 inch slider but it won't work with cabinets against the wall so I switched.
Great video. Hi quality build and hi quality cam work and editing. Thanks. The cheap snack containers for nuts and bolts are a great idea. Three suggestions would be to (1) use square containers instead of round to maximize your space, (2) use color coded labels to group hardware of the same size, and (3) put the labels on tops of the containers (not the sides) so the labels are all visible when you open the drawer.
Keeping the bit protruding from the router and damaging the brand new working surface: happened to me as well as soon as I finished my router bench... 😄
What kind of mask are you using? I checked out your list of tools and such on your website, but the RZ mask listed doesn’t have the straps I see in this video. I use an RZ mask and honestly don’t like it…it always wants to slip down. Thanks!
Fantastic work, Matt! Really well done! 😃 For my shop I built just a miter kart... You know? With wheels and wings... Because I don't have much space, unfortunately. But it works great for me. 😊 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Is it possible to install this bench away from a wall - not secured to a wall like you’ve done? I want to build this, but it will be in the middle of the shop. Would not adhering to a wall for support cause structural issues for the bench top, saw weight, cabinet contents weight, etc?
Hi, your skills are awesome, I am new to woodworking and need to make these stations as my workspace is very disorganised. i have a query about your plans for this, does it come with the plans to make the cabinets as well? and as a novice what station would you recommend to start with?

It's gorgeous. Love the ideas. But I really don't understand miter saw stations that don't allow for a full swing of the miter saw blade. You just turned your Festool compound miter saw into a $1600 chop saw.
I can rotate my saw 50 degrees in both directions. Which is complete range to the left. The right side goes to 60 degrees. I've owned the saw 2 years and never had a need to go beyond 50 degrees but all it would take to use that is to clip the corner of my counter top a few inches and problem solved. I just haven't done it because I haven't needed to.
Your concern about the water in the glue warping your benchtop is well founded. I added too much glue to a layers MDF + plywood workbench top I made last year and the whole thing has cupped slightly upward and has no good flat surface now. Eventually I'm going to have to remake the whole thing, to the tune of a couple hundred dollars probably 🤦🏻♂

What do you not like about the Incra track? I was planning on using myself. What did you discover that makes you think that?
How is the “cleat” for the tray holding the saw created? Is this a “French cleat”?
It's just two pieces of scrap screwed together in an "L" shape and then screws to the side of the cabinet. No, not a French cleat.
