  • In this video , I show you how I do the valleys on a shingle roof.
    Many roofers cut the shingles across because they say it's safer .
    no one of this affirmations are true...Remember ...it's not about the materials ...
    It's the craft man doing the work !
    Greetings and hope you like it !

    Definetly not the best way. You should never have so many small pieces that close to a valley.

    Bad idea in snowy/rainy climate. Probably O.K. where dry but I highly doubt it meets mfg. specs. Water will stay in gaps on valley roofing that's place "sideways" and eventually damage/lift it especially when it freezes + get into the nails easier. Gaps need to run down hill as straight as possible just like every other shingle on the roof and you need to cut small 45 degree corner off each shingle on top in valley to release water. Glue the seam a couple inches inboard. I'm from the frozen north, though. Good video, thanks for doing it - just my opinion and I could be totally wrong.

    we in Michigan use ice and water shield under the valey run it like how you would the metal valley and then lay the metal valley and then get another peace of ice and water or grace cut in half long ways so you have 2 peaces and lay them 5 to 6 inches from the center of the valley in order to cover nail in that area... thats the best way to do it brothers... no leaks!!! and we chalk our line 3 in from the top of the valley and 4 in on bottom

    • @russelltech7691
      @russelltech7691 6 лет назад

      that's how we install it in Indiana as well. cover's the nails and an extra leak barrier.

      chris mosher yes I agree ,that is when you start from the opposite side of the valley, but like I said I prefer to start my shingles from the valley Is faster once you learn to nail to the left or to the right

      @bigal9940 7 лет назад +1

      I also start working out of the valley and just run it back. Much faster and you only have one cut. I start working out of the valley on both sides that way it's only to do the valley cut, clip the corner, and run it back to the eve. I go up 3 or 4 courses before cutting the ends. I just find it's faster when you have 1 person taking care of the valleys while the other guy is finishing the runs up the roof

    It really doesn't matter how long you have been roofing if what you are doing is incorrect. There are things that we are required to go by like building codes and manufacturer's specifications. Also when you were nailing fast it looked as though you were nailing high (above the nail line in the single-ply). Every bundle of shingles has instructions to the specifications for installation and if you don't follow those specifications then later when the homeowner has a problem with the roof and the shingle manufacturer's rep comes out and inspects the roof, they will deny it because of faulty installation.

  • @SkilledEddie

    I would make sure i would have at least a 1/4 of shingle as the last piece in the valley. No way i would nail those slivers anywhere on a roof. Those slivers are the first to blow off in high winds.

  • @russelltech7691
    @russelltech7691 6 лет назад +5

    some people will tell you to seal the shingles to the metal after you pop the line.once the son hits the shingles, they seal and stick to the metal. the only thing different here is we install ice and water under the metal,then cut a piece of ice and water in half and run it on both sides of the metal. however I've seen it both ways, and personally I've never had a problem with it. 👍

  • @pintobean9071
    @pintobean9071 8 лет назад +7

    I do my valleys the same way. Never had a problem.
    Only thing I do different is I don't chalk the lines on W valley. I have a four foot "yard" stick that's 2" wide and I set my starter (header) shingle to that. I just slide it up as I go. It works slick and saves me steps.
    You'll find that the people who criticize you are the ones who really don't know as much as they think they do. They might have a roof or two under their belts but that's about it.
    I tell them to come back when they have about ten-thousand or so squares behind them and then we'll talk.

    Shingles need to be installed in a north/south orientation.....always. Running a shingle parallel to a valley is a shortcut used to benefit the shingler, not the homeowner. This is especially true with laminate shingles with tapered top tabs. The tabs are at a 90 degree angle to the water flow minimum, which could direct water away from the valley rather than towards it. Roofing vs shingling 101.

      This is a sharks tooth pattern in a metal valley for shingle application how can you get better? State Certified Journeyman Roofer/waterproofer & contractor approved. What he did wrong was work into the valley instead of out he cut twice books (pattern) on the rake edge and his tie into the sharks tooth valley. I almost always used this style valley especially with gravey 4/12 pitch, it runs out perfectly with points on the line. This valley is in manufacturers specs, if you were a certified installer you would know that. On steep you cut into valley like he did, because pitch affects pattern.
      Nail guns work both ways if you use your brain don't have to be lefty to run lefty, just practice video maker. Stay thursty!

    You supposed to add one eighth of an inch per foot going down the valley to that sock line so that you have created a wider Channel at the bottom is what per manufacturer pabco Premier shingles advises what do you think you're a really excellent roofer by the way I just want to tell you that

    i must be not thinking correct but why were there ends of some of the shingles lining up with the one right below it.. i know usually u have like a 5 to 6 inch difference at the ends, but it looked liked a couple pieces where ending at the same point..... if im saying that right.. maybe its alil different in valley

    most of these guys don't start in the valley because they don't like to roof from right to left only from left to right here in Indiana we install ice and water shield underneath the metal and then ice and water shield on both sides on top of the metal before you pop the line and run the shingles for a leak barrier I've seen it done both ways and it works either way

  • @markspidell4699

    What he's doing is called a zipper valley folk's. No good! Each shingle needs to be cut with the bleader shingle that runs up the valley, along with cutting the headlamp of each shingle on a 45 degree angle to draw the water back into the valley. No good.

  • @eduardomeza540

    i think is more easy and fast if you start with full pcs from the valley. so that way you don't have small pcs close to the valley. pero bueno asi se ase en cali creo.

  • @Bob42047bmx
    @Bob42047bmx 5 лет назад

    Those bleeders make valleys look like shit & look like where they butt up would draw water in. This is a money making get done fast valley. Cut valleys look twice as good & are way better but I guess if your lazy & suck at cuts thats prob right up your alley.

    great work
    where i live we get a lot of rain and snow, so i use ice and water shield under the w valley as well as over the w valley, (not over it completely but just to where your shingles are. One 1 thing i dont personally like, is it looked like you are using 3-tab shingles for starter, i know a lot of roofers that do, but i much prefer an actual starter strip, although using the 3-tab doesnt affect the standard warranty of shingles, it will not pass for a gaf golden pledge or system plus warranty.

    • @Garciasroofing
      @Garciasroofing  8 лет назад +2

      +John Rawlins you are right ! I run out of starters ...I ordered 2 bundles and I was short 2 pieces at the valley area...LOL
      I don't like to use 3 tabs shingles as starters because the starter bundle gives me more lineal feet than the bundle of 3 tabs.
      Greetings from CA ...where we have 1 week of rain the whole winter.

    Thanks. I'm putting a small roof over a porch. One side goes to a wall with vinyl siding and the other side is going to attach to the garage roof. I'm assuming where the garage roof and the new porch roof meet, valley flashing is the best way to mate the two together? Great video.

    Eric, do you know a trusting honest roofer on the East Coast area in Maryland? I have a small flat roof and have trouble finding a roofer doing small jobs.
    thank you

    That's definitely not wrong, maybe it's not everyone's preferred method. As long as it's done right and looks professional, that's the important part.

    Just like a lot of people noticed little pieces of shingles to close to the valley, not right, I roof in the Pacific Northwest areas and we called that a California valley or chitter valley

    Eric, I love your videos! Do you have video where you show both metal valleys from the dormer tying into each other. I have a couple ways I cut and create an upside down "V" at the top of the valley. I'd also like to see how you install the ridge cap over the top of metal valley and under the shingles on the main roof. Thanks! -Mario
