On the whole, Phineas and Ferb ships are uncontroversial and straightforward... except for the most popular one.
One of the most chaotic ships in Disney Channel history is hidden in plain sight. As polarizing as Act Your Age is in isolation, the rest of the ship's history is fascinating on a visceral level.
Today we're examining the history of Phinabella through its canonizing episode, some of the folks who made it happen and a functional analysis of what once was. This is lowkey just 'Isabella Appreciation Hour' but it felt weird to retitle this given some of the points I made.
lowkey this video's been in the making for a decade lol
There's a couple of old animatics thrown in here for reference; if anything needs to be taken out, just let me know.

    ONE MORE THING
I had a lot of fun putting this one together but it's definitely not the norm as far as subject matter goes. My only formal ask is that you check out this other video I did if you enjoyed this one. The vibe and editing style is similar to this one but the writing is hitting on deeper themes and issues. Personally, I think it's one of the best things I've ever made across several mediums of art.

Hey there! The guy who played “Phineas” in MWCA here. We’re all so glad that you enjoyed the show and the dynamic between Phineas and Isabella. Our writer and director, Andrew Grabowski, really wrote such a beautiful confession scene that puts an open-ended bow on the characters’ relationship, and I’m so honored that you view Tami and me as Phineas and Isabella’s “physical embodiment” of the characters 😂
Love your videos man. Keep up the good work, and thanks for the shoutout!

I always thought this finale was really bittersweet; growing up means missing what was and thinking about what could have been. I grew up with this show, it felt like an end of an era

Ya its sweet that Isabella and Phineas end up together finally but its kinda sad to think it took this long or that Phineas and Isabella drifted away and stopped being best friends as they grew up its kind of depressing.

The issue with "Act your Age" is that it limits Isabella's development in the actual show. It's like if Doof becoming good happened during the timeskip, what do you do until then?
It wasn't much of an issue then when the series was about to end, but now that we're getting more show it's an issue. The constant ship teasing won't work if people already know there won't be a payoff.

Wow, what a great and in-depth video! You've clearly given this ship even more thought than I have (but not as much as Aliki Theofilopoulos has. You're somewhere right in the middle). I don't love or hate Act Your Age quite as extremely as others I've seen. I agree that it's got some pretty major flaws and a tone that can feel cynical, at times even antithetical to the core of what Phineas and Ferb is about. But as you explained, it was an earnest attempt to bookend an arc that lots of fans were invested in, and I respect it for that if nothing else. I don't think it needs to be rewritten or retconned.
That said, I definitely did make it a point when writing MWCA to explore Isabella's confession of her feelings to Phineas in a totally different way, one that felt more in line with their previous characterization. I wanted to see what such a revelation would look like if it actually interrupted their lives as we know them, and wasn't just a far-off bookend, the effects of which we conveniently don't get to see. And that interaction in my script materialized as a brief, somewhat awkward, but most of all brutally honest conversation. I didn't let it linger too long because as Vincent Martella suggested, the appeal of their dynamic is that it's an innocent, honest crush, nothing more or less. I think raising the stakes and placing so much pressure on the confession is what made Act Your Age feel most like fanfiction, as elevating that conflict to such a strong degree required a big tonal departure. That's why Doofenshmirtz's plot is my favorite part of the episode - it not only provides levity as you suggested, but feels way more like the Phineas and Ferb we know and love.
But anyway, thanks for highlighting that scene I wrote, and MWCA as a whole. I'm super grateful I was able to find a cast to bring those characters to life in my own specific vision (twice). And the fact that it's left an impression on fans and become part of the conversation of PnF at large is really heartwarming. For totally non-selfish, unbiased, definitely not self-congratulatory reasons, a video about MWCA sounds pretty dope. You should do it. (And I love how you pronounce it 'Mo-a-cuh', that's a new one!)

While I did like Act Your Age myself, I like it as an "Alternate Universe Episode". When it comes to treating it as an episode to the canon series, I'm not a fan for a few reasons:
    - Ferbnessa: My negative opinion on Age Gap Ships is the main reason for this been a reason (my headcanon for him is that he starts dating Gretchen in High School)
    - Some of the designs look off, mainly in regards to Buford, some of the Fireside Girls & Irving
    - Lack of Candace, Stacy & Jeremy
    - In my headcanon, Isabella & Phineas would of started dating during High School
    - Baljeet x Ginger: They're relationship in the episode is shown to be pretty toxic, and honestly, I'm surprised the other Fireside Girls didn't talk her out of the relationship already
    - And as you already stated, some of the lines haven't aged well at all

Yeah, while it isn't my worst episode of the show (that goes to Mind Share), it is the 2nd worst episode for me overall, therefore the worst special.

I don’t think the Marvel crossover is bad, though I wish Doofenshmirtz and the Marvel villains got more to do.

Ok this is random and honestly doesn’t matter but Vanessa’s sports car was a 2 seater with Ferb already in the passenger seat so how did Phineas get a ride with them to Isabella’s place?

Watching this now made me think of something. While I don't hate the episode and just think it's ok, I have always felt something off about it and it makes me wonder what the order of developing the episode went. It almost seems like they had the simple premise of a Phineas and Isabella timejump episode, then wrote the song (which is great), then had to write the episode plot to get to the song in question.
In other words, in most (if not all) episodes the song(s) always seem to be written to fit the plot of the episode, while "Act Your Age" seems to have the episode written in order to fit the song.

You absolutely nailed it with your take on Isabella. Still a great character, but it would've been nice to give her some more depth like they did with Candace. And the constant Phinabella gags just simply ended up making any investment towards the relationship and Isabella's character in general totally meaningless. Not to mention that with the context of Act your Age, it just leaves the impression that Isabella never mustered the bravery to be honest with her feelings, which just makes it the more disappointing.

I don't see what's the peoblem, first of all this is a slice of life show, so i don't know why people expected larger than reactions like in a soap opera, let things be low key, or otherwise stop it!
